Biography

  • Nicky Jam is a singer and songwriter hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, United States who was born on March 17th, 1980. Since debuting in 1994 he has released five studio albums and is best known for his collaborations with Daddy Yankee and several huge hits in the world of reggaeton.

They say truth is stranger than fiction, and Nicky Jam, born Nick Caminero to a Dominican mother and a Puerto Rican father, has one of the most unlikely and genuinely inspirational rags-to-riches stories in reggaeton, the kind of life that would almost be too bizarre for a film. Born in Boston, Massachusetts but relocated to Barrio Obrero in Puerto Rico at the age of six, music was Caminero's escape from a life that began in pretty extreme poverty. It got to the point where while he was still legally a minor, Caminero was drafted to do illegal work in a grocery store to help support his family. In what little free time he got, he would busk in front of the store to make a little more money and hone is performance skills.

While he was performing, a homeless man who was a regular audience member for Caminero's busking sets gave him the nickname Nicky Jam, but he wasn't the only person to see the eleven year old's talent blossoming that early. A music executive also saw him perform outside the grocery store, and in a move that seems straight out of a Hollywood movie, signed him to a record deal basically on the spot. The label teamed him up with a number of hugely respected producers and in 1994, Nicky Jam's first album “...Distinto A Los Demás” was released when he was a mere fourteen years old. While the record wasn't a hit, it was far better than anyone expected from the teenager, and shortly afterwards, Jam began having his follow up tracks become regional hits.

Because of this, he was teamed up with fellow Puerto Rican producer and songwriter Daddy Yankee, and with him, he started becoming a commercial force to be reckoned with. Ever since his 2001 album “Haciendo Escante” made him one of the biggest reggaeton artists in the world, he has remained one of the most respected artists of the genre. For making the transition from teen star to adult artist better than many could dream of, and remaining relevant to this very day, Nicky Jam comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

  • Nicky Jam

Nick Rivera Caminero better known by his stage name Nicky Jam has taken his dual heritage of Puerto Rican and Dominican Republican and his love of reggae music and fused all these influences to create a truly different sound. During the 90s, he was considered one of the Latino world's most exciting new performers.

Years later and he still entertains crowds with his confident persona and fiery live show. Bringing the atmosphere of a Vegas club night, the lights are low, the music loud and the performer eccentric. He saunters from side to side in order to charm the whole crowd at once and make sure they are all completely on the vibe and involved in Nicky's show. He is supported by a number of musicians and a DJ keeping the whole show in time yet it really is all about the main man and he makes that known throughout the evening. It is a really interesting musical combination and unarguably danceable so for a fun show, go see Nicky Jam.

  • If you have not seen this Artist live, I must tell you you are missing out. I saw him at Thunder Valley Casino and I enjoyed the venue, his performance, and the energy he brought to the stage. I’ve hit several Reggeaton concerts this year and he ranks as my favorite by far, followed by Karol G. I am actually looking forward to seeing him again. You can tell he enjoys what he’s doing and he’s down to Earth, which is awesome considering he’s at the top of his game. The music played during the interludes was great too! It kept the party going! He definitely didn’t skip a beat! I shall be prairie dogging to see when he comes through again.

  • Nicky Jam was AMAZING! Plan B opened up for him. I was able to get some front row tickets to the show, and I must say they were well worth it. Nicky Jam sounds awesome live, just as he does in his music; his performance, his character, his demeanor, everything was more than I expected! My cousin and I had a terrific time, it was my first time being front row in a concert and I am so glad it was to see Nicky Jam. I hope to see him again soon. I DO wish he would have performed “El Ganador,” as it is my favorite song by him to date. But it was a dream come true to watch this star perform live!
