The 42-year-old actor will appear alongside Emily Tennant in Hallmark’s new Countdown to Christmas film Holiday Hotline. The movie follows Abby (Tennant), who after leaving London, connects with an anonymous caller while working at a cooking hotline. The caller happens to be single dad John (Matter), who Abby unknowingly has become “smitten” with in real life. Holiday Hotline premieres on the Hallmark Channel on November 18 at 8 p.m. EST.

Although Matter is a Hallmark regular, acting wasn’t always his full-time job. He started out working on oil rigs before pursuing a career in film and TV. Matter told The Chicago Tribune in July 2011 that he had a life-threatening accident when he was 25 where he was crushed inside the cab of a 17-ton drilling rig.

“They had to rip me out of there,” he explained. “It was pretty awful. It was horrific actually. I got to the hospital and the doctor immediately wanted to amputate my right leg. In the end, I was able to remain intact and go through extensive physio to be able to wal again.”

“It took me about six months to learn how to walk again,” Matter added of his recovery. But when finally got back to the rig, “my very first week I saw a terrible accident … and the next day I quit.” He came back to Vancouver and after a month of working as a bartender, he booked his very first lead role — and the rest was history.

Matter’s first break was when he was hired to play Trent Hamilton for the hit Canadian TV series The Best Years. He’s also portrayed Zne Donovan on Syfy’s Eureka and Evan Cross on Primeval: New Work. He’s also guest-starred on The Good Doctor, Constantine, Supernatural, iZombie and more.

Who is Niall Matter’s wife? Hallmark star Niall Matter is currently married to Sara Matter (formerly Sara Bradley). It’s reported that Sara was also raised in Canada, but not much is known about her or how the two first met.

As for their wedding, the couple tied the knot in July 2016 in a private ceremony in Kauai, Hawaii. Niall and Sara share two children together, a daughter born in 2016 and a son born in 2019. Matter and his wife have not shared their children’s names publicly.

On Matter’s X account, the actor revealed that his wife calls him “Mr. Christmas.” When a fan asked how much of his character Luke (from 2019’s Christmas at Dollywood), he responded: “Well, I have much more up around here then just a wreath… spent most of the day getting the tree perfected. My wife called me Mr. Christmas if that’s any indication.”
