The NFL Combine made its triumphant return this week after one year off as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. NFL fans were eager to see the league's top prospects — and their favorite prospects — in action at the 2022 NFL Draft.

The on-field drills are, arguably, among the least important events at the NFL Scouting Combine. Teams are usually more focused on medical exams and interviews as they get to know the player off the field and not from the tape. That's why a handful of potential top prospects — such as Evan Neal, Derek Stingley and Matt Corral — choose to wait until their pro days to conduct the on-field drills.

That said, there were still plenty of top-tier prospects in action at the combine. And given the relative uncertainty atop each positional big board in this top-light class, players who interviewed and tested well could still have an opportunity to rise.

The intrigue surrounding these prospects is why the league is, once again, hosting the event in prime time. The NFL Combine shifted its workouts from the morning and early afternoon to prime time in 2020 to capitalize on the interest in these prospect workouts.

While teams already know, or can roughly estimate, the measurables of each player, the fans don't know as much. So, for many, this was a great opportunity to get to know the best players and potential first-round picks of the 2022 NFL Draft.

The combine absolutely produced several winners, including Liberty quarterback Malik Willis, Georgia defensive tackle Jordan Davis and, in general, one of the fastest NFL draft classes of all time. It unfortunately also produced several players whose draft stocks may have taken hits as a result of their workouts and/or interviews.

Below is a look at the notable results from on-field NFL Combine workouts on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday, March 6

7:01 p.m.: To reiterate: No human being the size of Jordan Davis should be able to move that fast. Rich Eisen never stood a chance.

6:57 p.m.: The league is about to get a whole lot faster.

6:35 p.m.: Woods high-steps into the end zone, and the rest of the defensive backs follow him in:

6:15 p.m.: The numbers don't lie. This is the fastest defensive backs class in NFL Draft history, led the way by two top-five 40-yard dash finishers in Barnes and Woolen.

5:55 p.m.: Good company for Dax Hill, the one-time Alabama commit who eventually balled out at Michigan:

5:36 p.m.: That's an unofficial 4.36 for Baylor safety JT Woods. Must be something in the water down in Waco:

4:40 p.m. Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton, currently projected as the No. 2 player off the board per The Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer, isn't doing much to detract from himself at the Combine:

3:45 p.m.: Bumping this: Kalon Barnes has officially been clocked at 4.23 in the 40-yard dash, setting a record for defensive backs and coming just one one-hundredth of a second of Ross' Combine record. Here are Barnes' runs, at the time unofficially clocked at 4.33 and 4.29.

3:32 p.m.: Barnes has nice hands to go with those fast feet:

3:21 p.m.: Sauce Gardner showing great footwork to go with his speed:

3:12 p.m.: UTSA cornerback Tariq Woolen ran a 4.30 unofficial time at 6-4, 204 pounds.

2:45 p.m.: Baylor cornerback Kalon Barnes runs an unofficial 4.29 40-yard dash, good for second-fastest time of the Combine (so far). Baylor now has the fastest two 40 times of the event (receiver Tyquan Thornton is the fastest at 4.28).

2:42 p.m.: Impressive time for Georgia punter Jake Camarda.

2 p.m.: Kentucky's Yusuf Corker leads all defensive backs with 23 reps on the bench press — he and Penn State's Jaquan Brisker (22) were the only DBs to rep more than 20.

Saturday, March 5

10:35 p.m. — Jordan Davis wasn't the only defensive player to stun people with his speed Saturday; Virginia Tech edge Amare' Barno made history in the 40:

That's 4.37 officially, the fastest time by a D-lineman or linebacker in Combine history.

Even Barno was surprised, but other people knew he was capable of it:

6:45 p.m. — A simulcam view of three terrific defensive prospects:

5:10 p.m. — And here's Jordan Davis flying through a drill. This guy is scary.

4:30 p.m. — Wow. Jordan Davis runs an official 40 time of 4.78 seconds.

12:50 a.m. — James Cook let brother Dalvin know what his 40 time was. Dalvin had nothing but love for his sibling.

Friday, March 4

9:46 p.m. — The king of the 40 among running backs: It's a tie between Pierre Strong of South Dakota State and Isiah Pacheco of Rutgers, each with an official 4.37.

The times for some of the 2021 FBS rushing leaders: Kenneth Walker III, 4.38; Tyler Badie, 4.45; Sincere McCormick, 4.60; Breece Hall, 4.39; Brian Robinson, 4.53.

9:38 p.m. — Even the offensive lineman have speed this year:

8:38 p.m. — How would it look if brothers Dalvin and James Cook raced in the 40-yard dash? Here's a hint:

James did "beat" Dalvin with an official 4.42 time, so James can claim bragging rights.

6:45 p.m. — The O-linemen are done running. The second group is now doing drills. It's on to 40 time for the running backs.

6:27 p.m. — More sub-5.0 times (unofficially) for offensive linemen: Tulsa's Chris Paul was at 4.92 and Northern Iowa's Trevor Penning clocked a 4.91.

5:38 p.m. — Arizona State tackle Kellen Diesch has the fastest official 40 time among O-linemen with a 4.89. Cam Jurgens is tied for second with Washington State tackle Abraham Lucas at 4.92.

4:23 p.m. — Nebraska center Cam Jurgens has the time to beat so far. He clocked a 4.91 time and looked smooth running the 40.

4:17 p.m. — Ikem Ekwonu, who is in the running to be the No. 1 overall pick, also broke the 5-second mark. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.97 seconds.

4:12 p.m. — Charles Cross, a likely first-round pick, runs a 4.93 in the 40. He's the first offensive lineman on the day to break the 5-second mark.

4:05 p.m. — Neither Tyler Linderbaum nor Daniel Faalele will work out at the combine today. Linderbaum is dealing with a foot injury while Faalele (6-8, 384 pounds) is waiting to work out until his Pro Day.

3:55 p.m. — Is this the last year that the combine will take place in Indianapolis? The NFL's contract with the city ends after this season, and it looks like Dallas or Los Angeles could host the event in the future.

3:40 p.m. — If you're looking for a metric to watch while the offensive linemen work out, keep an eye on the short shuttle. Those that can complete the drill in 4.47 seconds or less often become solid, pro-level starters, as Josh Norris of Underdog Fantasy points out.

3:37 p.m. — Day 2 of the NFL Combine workouts starts at 4 p.m. ET. Running backs, offensive linemen and specialists will work out during the event.

3:34 p.m. — Oklahoma's Mike Woods had one of the smoothest catches of the first day of the combine. He went up to grab the fade and toe-tapped perfectly in the makeshift end-zone. He didn't run fast, but he looked good in the drills.

2:54 p.m. — Could EJ Perry be a quarterback sleeper in the 2022 NFL Draft? He posted the highest athleticism score among quarterbacks at the combine, besting Desmond Ridder 89 to 82.

2:06 p.m. — Only one receiver notched a 99 athleticism grade from Next Gen Stats despite the uber-fast times posted on Thursday night. Who got the best mark? That would be North Dakota State's Christian Watson.

1:41 p.m. — Zion Johnson is STRONG. The Boston College lineman put up 32 bench press reps on Friday afternoon, showcasing his upper-body strength for talent evaluators.

1:12 p.m. — Iowa State running back Breece Hall will be in action today. He's confident that he will show well and called himself "the best running back in this draft."

12:34 p.m. — Dameon Pierce's day is off to a good start. The Florida running back put up 21 reps on the bench press and showed determination pushing through the final one.

11:55 a.m. — Another interesting measurement: NC State offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu, who is in the mix for the No. 1 pick, has an 84.25-inch wing span. That's less than an inch shorter than Daniel Faalele's wing span even though Faalele is four inches taller and 74 pounds heavier than Ekwonu.

11:00 a.m. — Good news for NFL fans: Kayvon Thibodeaux, a top pass rushing prospect from Oregon, will participate in drills at the combine on Saturday. The potential No. 1 overall pick feels like he has something to prove to talent evaluators.

"I feel like I’m Jadeveon [Clowney] 2.0," Thibodeaux told reporters on Friday morning.

9:05 a.m. — Another tackle to watch on Friday will be Minnesota's Daniel Faalele. He weighed in at 6-8, 384 pounds and is the heaviest player at the combine since 2003. He had a unique rise to prominence in college football and could be an athletic freak.

8:00 a.m. — The rest of the offensive players, running backs and offensive linemen, will work out today along with the specialists. Ikem Ekwonu is the top prospect scheduled to work out, as Alabama's Evan Neal will not be participating in drills until his Pro Day.

Thursday, March 3

11:00 p.m. — This is, officially, the fastest receiver group in NFL Combine history. Eight receivers totaled sub-4.4 times in the 40-yard dash, breaking the previous record of seven set in 2019.

10:55 p.m. — Well, we came close to having the fastest combine run of all time. However, Tyquan Thornton ran a 4.28 in the 40, 0.07 seconds slower than his original time. There were some major adjustments for 40-yard dash times, including that of Chris Olave, who saw his time drop to 4.39.

8:30 p.m. — We may have a new fastest man: Tyquan Thornton ran a 4.21 (unofficial), which would break John Ross' 4.22 record if it goes official:

8:17 p.m. — Cincinnati's Desmond Ridder runs a 4.50 and a 4.49 in his two runs, while Ohio State's Chris Olave lights up the stopwatches with a 4.26 in his first run. Impressive.

7:24 p.m. — Quarterback throwing drills up, Sam Howell in this group, the most noteworthy name in this group.

6:55 p.m. — Gauntlet drill for WRs up now.

6:13 p.m. — Arkansas' Treylon Burks, in conversation to be WR1 for the 2022 NFL Draft, runs a 4.55 first try at the 40-yard dash. Not exactly blazing speed. He follows that up with a 4.50 on his second run.

5:48 p.m. — Tight ends wrap up, quarterbacks up next.

5:13 p.m. — UCLA's Greg Dulcich puts together the best run in the gauntlet drill. Could be a riser this draft season:

4:53 p.m. — Winter is coming to an end, but it's still sled season at the Combine.

4:42 p.m. — UCLA's Greg Dulcich was motorin': He finishes with a 4.61 40 in his second run.

4:23 p.m. — The first group of tight ends have all run now. The clubhouse leader for the 40 is now Chigoziem Okonkwo from Maryland. He ran the 40 in 4.54 seconds. Jelani Woods, a 6-7 Virginia product who posted 24 reps on the bench press, ran a 4.61 to tie Dulcich for second place.

4:20 p.m. — Connor Heyward, with older brother Cam watching, clocks a 4.73 in the 40-yard dash. So far, UCLA's Greg Dulcich (4.61 unofficial time) is the leader among tight ends.

4:09 p.m. — The tight ends are going to be up first at the NFL Combine. Austin Allen from Nebraska is the first of the combine to run, and he posts a 4.79 mark at 6-7.

4:00 p.m. — The NFL Combine broadcast is officially underway!

3:50 p.m. — Speaking of 40 times, we could see some fast ones from the wide receiver group. Cornerbacks and receivers tend to run the fastest 40-yard dashes, so keep an eye on the receivers today.

NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah lists the following three receivers as having a chance to be the fastest player at this year's combine:

  • Danny Gray, SMU
  • Jahan Dotson, Penn State
  • Calvin Austin III, Memphis

3:48 p.m. — UNC quarterback Sam Howell will NOT run the 40-yard dash at the combine, as he's nursing a calf injury. He's still going to throw, but Howell is another of the top-five quarterbacks in this draft class that will not run.

3:32 p.m. — Workouts start shortly at the 2022 NFL Combine. Arkansas wide-out Treylon Burks will be in action on Thursday, and he spoke earlier in the week about his affinity for 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel.

"I try to mimic my game after him," Burks said.

We'll soon see if he has any Deebo-like skills in his bag.

3:11 p.m. — Kenny Pickett wasn't the only one with an eye-popping hand-size measurement. Skyy Moore, a receiver from Western Michigan, checked in with 10.25-inch hands despite standing only 5-10.

2:49 p.m. — The tight ends hit the bench press today at the NFL Combine. One of the top performers was Virginia's Jelani Woods. The 6-7 playmaker logged 24 reps of 225 pounds.

2:27 p.m. — Malik Willis and the quarterbacks haven't even worked out yet, but he's already a big winner of NFL Combine week. Why? He has interviewed extremely well, per Jeff Howe of The Athletic. Stock up for Willis.

1:55 p.m. — In case you missed the excitement, Kenny Pickett's hand size measurements are in. The Pitt quarterback has 8.5-inch hands, which would measure as the smallest among any current NFL quarterback.

NFL Combine schedule 2022

The 2022 NFL Combine will, once again, be a prime-time event. The NFL made that change in 2020 to ensure they could maximize viewership for the event. Prior to 2020, all drills were held in the morning and early afternoon.

The combine will run Thursday through Sunday with position groups working out in prime time each day. NFL Network, the exclusive home of the combine, will show seven hours of drills each of the first three days and five hours of drills on Sunday. Rich Eisen and Daniel Jeremiah will serve as the primary voices for the event with various other NFL Network guests filling in each day.

Below is the complete TV schedule for on-field workouts and drills at the 2022 NFL Combine.

While the drills will be the big draw for fans wanting to see the draft prospects in action, other aspects are more important for the players. Notably, the player medical evaluations and team interviews will be critical in determining where certain players are drafted.

The interviews will be interesting to watch this season, as the NFL is putting an increased emphasis on team conduct within those interviews. According to the AP, the NFL said, "a team would forfeit a draft pick between the first and fourth round and be fined a minimum of $150,000 if it’s determined a club representative displayed conduct that is 'disrespectful, inappropriate, or unprofessional' during an interview."

"We aim for dignity, respect and professionalism," league executive Troy Vincent told the AP. "It’s that simple."
