This database indexes 82,467 names of New Jersey men who served during the United States Civil War. Entries link to an electronic version of Adjutant General William S. Stryker's two-volume
Record of Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Civil War, 1861-1865 , which was originally published by the State of New Jersey in 1876. The electronic version is hosted on the website of the
New Jersey State Library . The New Jersey State Archives gratefully acknowledges the State Library for presenting this valuable resource to the public, and for permitting the Archives to link our database to their web pages.
The volumes also include an account of how
Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Civil War was compiled, including:
Joint Resolution No. 9 (April 6, 1871), which initiated the process of gathering the Civil War records; and Stryker's
Report of the Adjutant General (July 4, 1876), which details the evolution and completion of the project.
For information about ongoing efforts to preserve and maintain the Civil War collections at the New Jersey State Archives, see
Civil War Grant Project. See also, the
Civil War Treasury Vouchers database for additional documentation of soldiers' and survivors' pay, wartime procurements, and subsistence pay to families.
For additional holdings in other Civil War Collections at the Archives see:
Civil War Collections catalog page.
This database may be searched by any combination of first name, llast name, regiment, service, and/or company. Within the results you can click "page" to see the soldier's name in Stryker's book; click "description of regiment," when it is available, to see the regimental description in Stryker's book; or click select, when records are marked "Available at the Archives," to order service records. Entries marked "Not Available" are included for reference only (for New Jersey men who served in federal or other state's units). The Archives provides no reference services for these records.
Research and copy services are provided from regimental records only . These include: New Jersey militia; New Jersey infantry and cavalry regiments; New Jersey artillery batteries; and a limited number of United States Colored Troops regimental records.
Results are limited to 500 records per search.
Entering the initial letter or string of letters into the name fields will return all records beginning with that letter or string. To search a string within a name, use the wildcard character * followed by the string. For example, the surname "Smith" may be searched to include the variant "Smyth" by entering "Sm*th" in last name field. To sort the search results click on the
header of each column.
To order a search of regimental records, click "Select " next to the record. Selected records are added to the shopping cart at the bottom of the page.
Click the "Back to Main Page " button to return to the list of searchable databases and records request forms.
Click "Check Out " or "View Cart " and follow the payment instructions to order copies.
Please read the instructions on the shopping cart page and order form carefully.
