Historical, famous trail in Ostallgäu, Bavaria. Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most famous castles in the world. It receives over a million visitors annually and has been open to the public since 1886. The castle is a 19th century Romanesque revival castle built under the Bavarian King Ludwig II, located above the village of Hohenschwangau. He had Neuschwanstein built in the style of the old German knight's castles. Today the castle is maintained by the Bavarian Palace Administration. Tickets can be bought before arrival or on the same day at the ticket office in Hohenschwangau. A guided tour is required and chargeable for adults, but free for children under 18. This route starts at the Alpseestraße in Hohenschwangau, near Hohenschwangau Castle and the Alpsee. Hohenschwangau can be reached by bus and train and offers paid parking. From there it goes on a well-developed path of Neuschwansteinstraße up to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. After a visit to the castle, the route continues a little further to the Marienbrücke and a beautiful vantage point from which the castle can be viewed in all its glory. There are rest stops and toilets in Hohenschwangau and just before the castle. Highlights of the hike: - Museum of the Bavarian Kings - Neuschwanstein Castle - Panoramic view of Lake Starnberg and the surrounding area

First of all I highly recommend taking the bus to the first stop. It’s a very long, uphill hike. If you do not get tickets to go inside the castle you will only need to purchase bus fare which is just a few dollars. It’s gorgeous everywhere you look!! There are restrooms and food for purchase at the top. It’s very crowded but I absolutely recommend going at least once. It is truly a fairy tale perfection like atmosphere. The walk down is pleasant with waterfalls running down the hill and lots of spring flowers blooming. An old, moss covered rock wall runs the length of the road down. This place is exceptionally picturesque.

Conditions: Great!

Thank god for this app, I got off trial and was able to correct myself because of this app. Views were amazing at the top

Beautiful hike. The first part of the hike around the castle is full of tourists and on a paved path but as you ascend there becomes less people all the way to the bridge. After that the path is on a trail in the woods that wasn’t hard to find but could be easy to get lost if not using navigation as many trails looks like paths. We went at sunset and were the only ones at the peak for sunset. Getting down in the dusk wasn’t bad and the view of the castle lit up from the bridge was the highlight of our time in füssen!

We did not go past the bridge, but the views of the castle were amazing! The path is paved the whole way and easily walkable. There are some steep climbs along the way.

So it’s almost unfair to review this trail because we went off the trail for better views of the castle. Some of the parts were difficult to climb because there are bunches of exposed roots.

Worth the hike for the view!

Amazing hike with awesome views of Neuschwanstein Castle and the surrounding countryside.

Lovely and chill but very crowded. Electric vehicle charger right at a nearby trailhead

A well maintained path. Unfortunately we had torrential rain and had to cut the hike short after getting to the bridge. Lots of dogs in leads.

Completed this hike with our dog, no trouble for him whatsoever. There is a very clear trail, it's soft underfoot, very little mud. definitely work the extra climb above the main bridge, the higher you go the less people you will see, well worth it.

Nice walk to the castle and back to the parking lot.

Conditions: Muddy, Slippery

Great view at end. Long wait at the bridge. Go early!

About 1/4 mile After Neuschwanstein Castle, there is a bridge that you must cross to continue the hike. It is near a bus terminal and many tourists go to see the castle from that viewpoint. When we went the first time, there was about an hours wait just to get into the bridge (that we wanted to cross over to continue our hike).. we doubled back, had a beer and tried again and this time there was no wait (after 4pm)

The first part of the route is via the castle road and then a gravel road. The last part is trail which is smooth. It was a demanding route but now hold up a view. It was worth the hard ride!

Nice hike up and around the castle. Keep on going for a beautiful view.

Beautiful day

July 3, 2023Hiking

Hiked on July 3rd. A bit cloudy but perfect for hiking. For best views go to MarienBruke bridge and a viewpoint 5 minutes past the bridge. The best view of the town is at the very top but that’s not the best view of the castle. Overall rewarding hike and worth the trip from Munich.

June 27, 2023Hiking

Go past the bridge to the spot that says best view of the town. Well worth it!

June 26, 2023Hiking

Not a terribly difficult hike, most of it is paved, it turns into a mountain trail past the bridge, you’ll definitely break a sweat but it’s not a crazy incline

Main road is asphalt and very crowded, but there are alternative paths through the woods that are nicer

June 13, 2023Hiking

A big chunk of the trail was actually closed off. I hope it reopens for other people. Make sure you bring at least 10 euros for parking.

June 8, 2023Hiking

Hike is very worth for the amazing views of the castle. Its very crowded up until the bridge but push through and you have a lovely hike with incredible view and not many people after the bridge!

Paved to castle then steep mountain trail to viewpoint
