"Deep Red Bells" alone makes this a must-have. But as a showcase for Neko Case's clear as a bell (!) voice, this is album is her best. It's not all great, but even the mediocre songs are lifted up by her amazing singing. There's more country torch here than would be found on later albums. Normally, that would be a red flag for me, but I love it here. Like the "Middle Cyclone" to come, Case is a force of nature.

Neko Case has a pretty great sound on all of her best albums, and this one fits that mold as well. "Things That Scare Me" is a genuinely great song, and there's plenty of other strong tracks here as well. It's not overly country, which I appreciate as well.

Alt-country is a genre that I've toyed with liking but I always end up in the same place: the music is too country for me but also sounds a little off since they don't commit to actually writing fully country songs. I've only started listening country in the last few years and even then it's the entry-level oldies like Cash and Robbins and Van Zandt albums. I much prefer my country dustier and more intimate so this ends up feeling too modern and polished. Adding in a pop sensibility and some rockish instrumentation pushes this too far too into twangy modern country territory for me. Neko does have a great voice and a few songs hit (Deep Red Bells, I Wish I Was the Moon) but generally this sounds too much like folk rock for me.

With each album I hear from her I love Neko Case's voice even more. This is probably the weakest of the three but there are some truly heart-melting moments, particularly during "Deep Red Bells", which may be up there amongst her best songs. The country twang that sometimes undermines it is a bit more present here, but it doesn't stop this from being a wonderful listen - more than the sum of its parts as well.

Consistent but without highs and lows...
'Blacklisted' was my second venture in to the back catalogue of Neko Case, I invested in the 2013 album (with the very long but excellent name). And even though I was left partially disappointed with the 2013 album - some spectacular tracks therein, but some truly terrible stuff too, I still went ahead and bought 'Blacklisted'.Well this album is a more consistent collection, and for me doesn't have the highs and lows of 'The Worse Things Get…' But when I say consistent, I mean consistent from a fairly average / ordinary point of view. So ultimately I am left with a slightly disappointed feeling. I haven't really found a strong connection, strong feeling about Neko Case, which surprises me when I see the rave reviews here on RYM.

Case's radiant voice and bone-deep sense of empathy illustrates the plight of those lost in the deep dark forest of America.

Ah, Neko Case. Her strong, crystal clear voice soars upwards and outwards, I could listen to this voice all day. Indeed, I have veritably played all her albums to absolute death, so for fear of killing them I've had to ration my listens.
Her country beginnings are evident in many of the twanging open spaces here on Blacklisted, but they're enhanced by an added contemporary sensibility and sophistication unparalleled by many of her musical peers. My favourite songs here are purely subjective and prone to change with my mood: right now I seem to have a thing for her cover versions. Definitely I'm hypnotised by the timeless jazzy haze of "Look For Me (I'll Be Around)", where Case's voice peaks and sways, soars and then gently ebbs. "Runnin' Out of Fools" has a similar sheen, a kind of "50s" reverb going on and, ah, that voice. Sensational. My pick of the pack of her originals is definitely "Pretty Girls" for the swirl of instruments and the clarity and strength of the vocal performance. So solid and commanding, such poise and elegance: "you're too good for this, don't let 'em tell you you're nothing, don't let 'em break your heart too". Awesome.Â
Impressive, too, that this was just the first in a string of incredibly solid album performances. Every album since this one has (so far) been an essential part of Case's discography. This album solidified me as a raving convert, a bonafide fan of Neko Case.

Old-fashioned alt-country that offers a preview of what's to come from Neko Case. Blacklisted's dark, vintage sound doesn't amount to her best album, but it certainly has its moments.
