I'm so jealous of the US's national parks and views...
I lived around Europe for over a decade, SE asia for 3 years, southern Africa for 2.
No place I've been rivals the US for picturesque geographic diversity. There's beautiful natural areas everywhere, but the US has it all. I feel like that is often underappreciated by people who live here but aren't into the outdoors/don't travel domestically
I've been very spoiled to have grown up here in the states, but I really want to see the Himalayas. I can't even imagine mountains that are twice as high as the ones we have here in the mainland.
Twice as high, yes, twice as big, no. If you want to see the largest relief of any mountain in the world, that would agian be in the good ol US of A at Denali.
Mauna Kea in Hawaii is bigger than Denali, but good try.
"largest relief of any mountain" what does that even mean? The Himalayan range spans across entire countries (Northern India & Tibet). The Denali range is no where close to the Himalayas, infact no mountain ranges in the US is comparable or "bigger" than the Himalayas. The Denali range is barely connected to the Canadian mountains and even if it does, it's not in the good ol' US of A lmao.
As a Dutch person, I can't even imagine mountains! 😉. But I've been to British Columbia and it was one of the most breathtaking expierences I've had seeing the mountains, and also the views from the ferry to Victoria.
Thanks!

Absolutely. In my opinion, the only place to rival Montana's mountains is the Swiss Alps -- but Switzerland doesn't have half the geographic diversity. And I love my home countries of Australia and the Netherlands, but nothing rivals the American landscape.
I'm going to Glacier National Park next month. I cannot wait.
Enjoy! It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.
I’m sitting in a campground in Glacier right now! It’s my favorite place. If you’re up for a 12 mile hike, do Grinell Glacier while you’re here. Best hike of my life 👍
Good time to. Most of the tourism is drawing down. Enjoy your stay! If you are around the Missoula area I’d be happy to give recommendations.
Good luck, and have a wonderful time!
Why not the Austrian alps?
You’re gonna hate me… but the Austrian alps are the alps for the people who couldn’t get a visa for Switzerland.
Jokes aside though, they’re really lovely. I haven’t spent much time there, but my father hiked all over them — and he loved them. They just don’t appeal to me quite as much.
I feel the same way but about China. Traveled it a lot as a kid because my parents wanted me to spend time with my grandparents. Some of the most incredible nature I’ve ever seen and I’ve done yellow stone, zion, grand canyon, etc.
Any recommendations?
Jiuzhai Valley National Park and Huangshan were the most memorable. I honestly don’t remember the names of a lot of them since I was younger and have very limited chinese.
Tiger Leaping Gorge!
I don't know. You really can't compare USA to one country in Europe. Maybe a state to country and then you can find similar places. If you compare Europe and US, you can find very diverse nature. From deserts in Spain, swamps in Estonia, big mountains in Switzerland or glaciers in Norway.
The closer comparison is Russia but since so few explore natural Russia it's pretty unknown what is there. It's an incredibly diverse country topographically.
Hey, we have big mountains and forests in Spain also. Actually, Spain is the most mountainous country in Europe with huge forest areas. In fact, there aren’t many deserts in Spain.
I know, for example Tabernas desierto. Or in the north Las Bardenas Reales. Beautiful gorges near Pyrenees, many different thermal pools all around the country. In Spain you can find almost anything.
British Columbia and parts of Alberta definitely rival it.
It ain't even close man. Canada has gorgeous alpine and boreal mountain/forrests, the us has them as well. The us also has deserts, sub tropics, wetlands/swamps, etc. It is so diverse from a biom prospective, not many countries can come close. The only one I can think of is China
Peru has it all and also jungle and +6000 meters mountains.
No proper giant mountains but Australia at least matching it for scenic diversity.
I live here in the US and I wish I was more outdoorsy so I could enjoy the national parks. And the normal parks, too.
Here's the great thing: the barrier to entry is super low! You don't need to even be that outdoorsy. Logan Pass, from the OP's picture, can be driven to via the Going to the Sun Highway in Glacier National Park. You can see views like the one here (and more) from your car window.
The US national parks have a lot to offer all people of all different interests and skill levels. They're one of our country's greatest features and they're more accessible than you might assume.
I recommend making an attempt to visit one of your closer parks. You might find you're more outdoorsy than you thought and getting just a taste of what our park system can offer might inspire you to become even more into the outdoors.
This is a great message
Why not just become more outdoorsy? It’s one of the most easily accessible hobbies you can have (unless you have some kind of disability).
There are PLENTY of amazing things to see in the national parks just by driving through them. Even if you’re physically not able to hike, many places are 1000% still worth visiting. A lot of them have roads that are built for great views with pull offs all along the road for getting out of your car and taking it all in. Glacier, Grand Canyon, and Petrified Forest are the first that come to mind. I’m sure there are plenty more too. Get out there!
(If you choose just one, go to Glacier and get on Going To The Sun road. It’s incredible. The picture on this post is taken from the road, not from some impossible-to-reach hike)
I dunno, the alps are pretty unreal. Canada had the goods too
I am always amazed at the people who think "travel" refers exclusively to leaving the US. Like there is nothing beautiful here to see.
Nah Iceland is the GOAT. You can see so much insane shit in single day. I got off the airplane and saw the damn northern lights going to the hotel.
USA overall has more sure but that requires traveling over an entire continent.
Iceland is actually so crazy that earthporn had like a ban on it for some time.
Iceland doesn’t have the variation that the US has. The US has basically every ecosystem and landscape you could want.
I agree that Iceland is a surreal, jurassic, and pristine landscape. But it's an arctic, glacial tundra for the most part, with some fjords in the west. It's stunning and one of my favorite places on earth, but it's not as varied as the US and that was their point. Also the US has Alaska which also has the northern lights and some similar landscapes
Northern lights are often visible in the northernmost tier of the US without going to Alaska. Not as consistently, but often.
Plus you can get shot anywhere easily and nobody will ever find you.
I don't know why you're getting downvotes.. anybody that knows about the plight of Native American women should know it ain't no joke
For single superbeutiful countries with vast differences in nature you should definitely travel through Russia and Peru.
Iran is also very beautiful but not as diverse.
Especially from the Rockies to the west. It is just absolutely gorgeous. The east has some great things too, but I absolutely love road tripping out west because there is just so much gorgeous scenery to see and explore.
Every place in the world has some views that are beautiful, US and Cannada are just so big they have way more.
Europe has plenty beautiful views. So does Africa Asia and South America (Patagonia and costa rica ring a bell?)
As a Brit it’s pretty depressing sometimes being surrounded by nothing but farmland, towns, and villages. It’s such a densely populated country, there’s people everywhere. There’s actually no true wilderness here at all, everything has been heavily transformed by human activity. Scottish Highlands are the closest thing to a wilderness left and as someone from the south it’s more expensive for me to travel and stay there than it is to just catch a flight and stay somewhere else in Europe. I’ve always envied America’s vast natural spaces.
I’ve been to Scotland and it was the best trip of my life. I spent almost all trip hiking over there and it was magical. Some of the biomes there made me feel like the Earth was just born thousands of millions years ago.
Also it was like 12 C and mild rain during summer. So so nice, I want to come back.
Yeah, wife and I are planning a road trip to the Highlands with our dog. Plan is to retire there one day... only demand we have is that the nearest village is 20min drive at least 😂
Some state parks in Oregon
Oregon is on my bucket list!
In Europe we have amazing geographical spots but being the old continent everything is more humanised. My dream trip is visiting the natural wonders of USA.
How is hiking around there by the way? Are there clear paths with indications and directions?
In the national parks, signage is usually really good. When you get to state parks and county parks signage can be a little hit or miss depending on if the funding is there. For example, Coopers Rock state forest in West Virginia has a huge amount of trails, but in lots of places they’re only marked by weathering on the ground and occasionally a tree with a painted stripe. On the other hand, Cuyahoga Valley National Park has dozens of trailheads each with their own trail map and signposts everywhere on the trails giving you length of the hike and which direction to go.
In the us? Not sure, haven't been there sadly... In my country and the ones I've been in europe they're pretty much pristine. Amazing hikes with perfect signage. But yeah, hard to get away from humanity like you can in the US's national parks
Is this the one where you can see a dog?
Was just there yesterday. Glacier is my happy place, and Logan Pass is incredible.
I learned what a Huckleberry was two days ago.
I'm yer huckleberry 🤠
A lot of local restaurants have huckleberry ice cream. It's amazing.
We just got back from Glacier, nothing beats a nice huckleberry ice-cream after a hot day of hiking in 80-90 degree weather!
I'm going to Glacier next month. Any tips?
Grinnell glacier is probably the prettiest but most crowded hike I have ever done.
I'm going in mid September when I hope that the crowds have died down a bit.
Go as early in the day as possible to beat the crowds. If you’re going hiking, hit up avalanche lake, the garden wall, iceberg lake, grinnell glacier, and hidden lake. Bring bear spray and keep it readily available, you will likely see a grizzly or two.
I can do 4 days of hiking. My rough itinerary is this:
-
Hidden Lake (at sunrise)
-
Highline (possibly after Hidden Lake)
-
Grinnell Glacier
-
TBD hike with options of Avalanche Lake and Iceberg Lake as options.
I'll drive the GTTS Road on Monday, and then 4 days of hiking.
I will borrow bear spray from a friend, and I plan on keeping it on the shoulder strap of my backpack right on my chest in case I need it.
And yeah, I am not going to fuck around with a grizzly at all.
That sounds like a great itinerary! Highline with the Garden Wall at the top is one of my all time favorite hikes! Enjoy.
A pretty huge tip to park at Logan pass if they’re not letting cars into the lot is to tel them you’re picking up a hiker.. they’ll let you park immediately. Also, people here are only recommending small touristy hikes, quite literally every peak in glacier is summitable non-technically with varying degrees of difficulty. Hiking peaks in the park is a great way to get away from crowded trails and have amazing views. Books like “climb glacier National park” offer great routes and maps, and many of the peaks can be found on mountain project and summit post. I’d personally avoid the really touristy hikes that you’re getting recommended unless that’s your thing
Was there in early July, unfortunately the going to the sun road was still closed. Super bummed about it but it gives me a reason to go back
Yeah, what’s going on there
The background got doubled, somehow. If you look at the snow along the ridge to the right of the ghost mountain, you can see that's been doubled too.
Ha noticed that. I mean, why?
So glad other people noticed this. Now I can't really trust the image is authentic.
It's not. These mountains don't exist. Glacier National Park is a myth.
Oh man that's crazy hilarious. Wild.
There is also a sudden decrease in picture quality from the upper to the lower parts of the background mountains
Was lucky enough to walk this trail 3 weeks ago. Great pic
nope. all CGI. nothing tagged montana is real. nothing to see here, move along! (stop popularizing the northern states damnit!)
5th generation Montanan and I can’t even afford to live here. BS
Freedom of movement is a bitch eh. Jokes aside, fat chance red ass Montana is going to create an affordable housing program to help native Montanans buy a home in the state. People always blame it on rich people and never the local and state governments.
I've heard they have the worst housing to income ratio in the country. Used to live there. Infrastructure vs cost of living is why I left.
The problem is they're usually one and the same.
Actually yeah great point. I should’ve specified moreso the blame falls on rich Californians and Washingtonians leaving their state. Though I agree an overexcess of money in any individual can cause problems in the system
I mean our governor is a billionaire poacher from Jersey what do you expect.
Just moved out of the Flathead Valley because I couldn’t afford to live there anymore and I couldn’t really stand to live there anymore tbh. My parents were born and raised in the Flathead and they also just booked it out of the state. I miss the mountains but not the people. Didn’t feel like home anymore.
Why should people not born in Montana never be able to visit? I guess you are never allowed to visit a new state or country either?
It’s the people who come from other states and buy houses for at or above listing that are the problem. People born and raised in Montana can’t even afford to live in their own state any more because so many fucking Californians (and other stupidly high priced states) flooded into our state that they’ve practically terraformed areas of it into San Francisco. Most of the time they work from home, getting payed 100k plus while the average HOUSEHOLD income in Montana is 62 thousand per year. If you don’t see a problem with that then I don’t know what to say. Soon enough, there will be almost no more ranchers, no more farmers, no more miners or blue collar workers of any sort left in the state. Where do you think beef comes from? When no one is willing to pay a living wage to the people we depend on to not starve to death, things are gonna start getting pretty bleak. Long story short, Montana doesn’t belong to Montana’s any more
That's what I am jealous of as an European. These massive national parks are so beautiful.
The U.S. has such diverse landscapes which I feel like Europe doesn't, at least not to that extend.
A new documentary series called "America The Beautiful" recently dropped on Disney+ covering this exact topic. I thought it was an alright watch, especially if you're already interested in the geographical diversity of the US.
Amazing view and great photo! Montana is one of my dream locations for a vacation.
Montana is amazing!! Another alternative to Montana btw is North Cascades in Washington, very similar to but much less crowded than Glacier.
[removed]
North Cascades is approximately the same geographical region though.
[removed]
As long as you treat the land, locals and most importantly natives with respect we are very warm and welcoming. Remember to order the biscuits and sausage gravy for breakfast some day while you're here.
Man, do I miss Montana. I can’t wait to go back.
Wow, Montana is super ugly
My favorite national park (so far, ha!), Montana is amazing this time of year
I’m thinking of doing a multi day through hike with some friends next year and I want to go to Glacier NP since I’ve never been and it’s highly recommended. Any recommendations?
There's plenty of great hikes, just remember they have implemented a new reservation system so try to plan ahead (or you can enter the park after between 4pm-6am without a reservation). It's not necessarily a multi-day hike (you can do it in one, it's like 10 miles) but my favorite is the Highline Trail up top Logan's Pass and then you can actually stay at the Granite Park Chalet (pricey), or if I'm remembering correctly there is Backcountry area you could camp at if you don't want to pay the money. Plenty of other options but that would be one of the more quintessential Glacier hikes that's a little more challenging.
Stayed at the backcountry campground you mentioned about a month ago. Definitely need reservations for that spot but I highly recommend it
If you're up for it the hole in the wall campground between upper kintla lake and Watertown lake is really hard to get to but totally worth it. Most beautiful spot I've ever hiked to, though the glaciers around it are probably smaller than they were back when I was there last.
We just got back recently from a 53 mile loop starting and ending at many glacier. The key is applying for the wilderness campsites as soon as they open as spots are very limited. It's probably the prettiest place I've been to in my life and getting to see it without running into more than a handful of people a day was amazing.
Just visited Logan Pass for the first time last week. It was an amazing hike with beautiful views. I cannot recommend highly enough.
I was there last week too! Highline Trail was no joke.
Amazing picture. Most pictures of Glacier are beautiful, but don’t really capture the grandeur the park. This one does it
Far Cry 5 anyone?
It looks like that mountain was cut like a slice of cake.
Wow
I know the guy is super popular on YouTube, but now we're naming land after him?!
Fake! Glacier NP does not have any views like this! Absolutely not worth the trip for anyone considering it. It’s just a Blah park with nothing to see, go elsewhere please. 😏
I assume this is a ploy to get people to stop going
As cringey as this attitude may seem, honestly the amount the area surrounding glacier has grown has changed it so much that I don’t enjoy being there anymore and I was born and raised there. It has been sad to see little hometown places give way to large chain stores and for out of state people who come visit and think it’s SO PRETTY to come and buy up all the farm land and develop it. It just has a gross feel anymore.
Still way less developed than the alternatives.
Cringy? It’s an obvious joke.
There’s no way to get people to stop going. It’s just a joke. But seriously it’s the last of the great parks that aren’t completely overrun, and it’s only growing in popularity.
Besides, If people stopped going and supplying interest and money to the National Parks system, there wouldn’t be any national parks to visit.
Been over it. The beauty of the majority of the state is why we bought a chunk of it to enjoy...
Murica….fuck ye gonna patriot the shit out my balls ye! Wooooo Hoooooo. USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA. So did this used to be all water?
Maybe? I heard a whacky fairly tale about a storm that lasted 40 days and 40 nights...
Montana is on my bucket list. Hope to make it there one day! 😊
Gorgeous photo; the colours, framing...
Beautiful. I’ve been to Montana before, was considering moving there before realizing it would be too cold in the winter, but the summer is the perfect time to go visit.
Hell of a shot!
Oberlin. Easiest summit in the park
Montana will always hold a special place in my heart. Glacier NP is THE most beautiful place I’ve ever been.
I was just there last week to do some photography. Beautiful place!
Is this where they filmed the last few scenes from 'Logan'?
Wow!
Right next to Logan's Run.
I would have loved to have seen Montana
It's still there. You can still see it.
Not with Glaciers for much longer!
That one tree is huge
ayeee
Holy shit! That is an amazing photograph.
Wow😩
Great photo!
Used to live near there. Most beautiful state in the lower 48.
One of my great regrets is that I have not yet been to Glacier. Absolutely love Montana, have been to Yellowstone several times, currently live a 10 hour drive from Glacier, and…. Soon!
I've been on at least 17 backpacking trips in national parks and wilderness areas out west and glacier national park is the most beautiful place I've ever seen.
Beautiful
I appreciate Logan wasn’t such a douche as to put a possessive S on the end of his name for this pass
Thanks to EARTHPORN subreddit that we get a chance to see beautiful forms of nature :)
Such a beautiful place for vacation
I want to go to that
Beautiful!!
I hear the LOTR soundtrack on my mind
Straight out of a Bob Ross painting god dayum
That's a mind cooling shot!
I was just here. The stunning beauty of glacier natuonal is unparalleled.
By far my favorite national park of all time !! Breath taking to see it
Wow! What a beautiful shot
Was just here last week, absolutely amazing!
Spent two summers working hospitality here. I always think about going back.
What a state!
Beauty!
Drive right through there yesterday! Best drive in the US
This would an amazing place to take a trip with a small airplane ❤️
I love this 😍
Gorgeous! I live in St. Mary (east entrance to the park) year round and it always makes me so happy when I see photos of the park on reddit!
Awesome
Wow beautiful pic!! I am a retired Wild Land Firefighter. I had been to Montana over 15 times. Great memories!
