some of the best Chinese artifacts, art and history to be seen, well worth a visit. An easy half day venture. We rode the buses to get there which was fun navigating.

Take bus E02 from Kaoshiung HSR station. It drops off at either the museum first or temple later. Recommend you drop off at museum, walk to temple and take the bus back from temple....in this sequence. This is because on the return leg from Fo Guamg Shan to town, the bus picks passengers up from temple bus stop first (empty bus) and then from museum bus stop...where there's usually a long queue (which means you may not board, as once all seats are taken up, you wait for the next bus, usually an hour later).

We spent 4 hours at the museum. Fascinating views of pagodas and main building. Spend time listening and learning about the history of the religion. View the tooth relic (only one of three in the world). Listen to the monks share insights of the founder, religion and history of the place. Lots of eateries also available.

We next walked up the hill, about 800m to the temple/monastery. Spend an hour or two here.

This attraction includes a historic fort and a Victorian style mansion which used to be the residence of the British Consul. Pretty photogenic particularly on a fine day though.

This museum is pretty good. You can see not only the prehistoric civilizations of eastern Taiwan but the diverse cultures of aboriginal peoples. However, its location is really remote from wherever you are. The only way to get there is taxi; otherwise, you have to rent a scooter, which maybe a little inconvenient for foreign visitors.

Also, the architectural style is really..... um......revival? It can be easily recognized that it’s been built for decadesssssss. Not a disadvantage, but a little surprising~

The National Museum of History is in the Nanhai Academy. It has many artfacts relating to China's past. Comparisions to the Natonal Palace Museeumm are inevitable, but this museum has its own strengths.

Actually I was going to give five stars. The building is magnificent, the installations amazing, the displays fantastic. At the end is a condensed history of Taiwan under Japanese rule and influence. We particularly enjoyed the interactive segments in the Asian fabric department - so innovative!! Wi-Fi is strong and free. I strongly recommend first time visitors to come.

What took away the last star? The transportation system is silly. After you have parked, or gotten off from your transport, and having bought your tickets, you either have to walk a painfully long distance across a massive bridge to reach the museum (so obviously, not suitable for the elderly or those with physical problems), OR you have to queue up for a shuttle bus (which comes every thirty minutes - yes, you read that right; so just imagine coming to this museum during one of their public holidays….). The shuttle bus practically takes you on a slow ambling tour of the entire facility which is a white elephant of a garden and lake… before reaching the back of the museum from where you have to continue to walk a distance (under the blistering heat of summer) to get to the building. The cafe at the shuttle bus station is closed, btw. And for the reverse route, you again have to walk a distance of about one to two hundred metres from the exit of the museum to the pickup point.

For many years, Kinmen was ruled from China. This museum was adapted to varied purposes, including a jail. Most prominently, it was the military headquarters in the Qing dynasty. It has a spreading banyan tree, and also a very tall ceibu tree. The museum has wax representations of historical figures connected to the museum, with English captions. By the way, the basement has a recreation of the jail, where prisoners were tortured to extract confessions.

It is stunning building housing an important story. There are some curatorial gaps that are odd, in particular the lack of an introduction that overarches Hakka culture and explains what the term refers to. Having said that, viewing all the exhibits finally allows you to piece the puzzle together.

Many – but not all – of the exhibition halls have English interps boards. Unfortunately some of the more interesting elements of the museum lack any English signage.

This was a nice visit for our kids. The place is pretty small, but the making paper activity is fun. Not much else to see in the museum part, and they have a small gift shop of paper products at entrance. Price to make paper and visit was NT$600 for all four of us.

The AMA Museum was a moving, must-do experience when visiting Taipei. The staff have done an amazing job at collecting and commemorating Taiwanese comfort women. Be prepared for an emotional experience and heavy material. The staff were very welcoming and shared a lot of information with us and answered all of our questions eloquently, in English. They ensured we had enough time to appreciate the entire museum, and provided helpful recommendations for other local learning opportunities. Would highly recommend.

The admission is $100NTD ($3USD) but is more like a coupon that can be applied to a later purchase from their store.

The buildings sits on an unusually spacious plot that is well-manicured and orderly. It is an old building that has had some updates to its entry side. Once you get inside the doors the age of the building becomes apparent.

Past the shop, through a door, is the museum of two rooms. The first holds old equipment used in the production of tea. It is a fantastic insight into the world that once was before computers ran the show. Secon room can be viewed through a half-door where they have people producing real tea for consumption on old rather old machinery.

When I went there, a nice man came over to say hello--I had been standing there for some time in amazement--and explain in more detail about how the machinery does the work. He spoke remarkably good English and it was all voluntary, as I was unaware of any guided tour from the workers. :)

There is a second level that is rather intriguing though somewhat dull. The imagination can help to bring it to life as it is no longer in use.

Once back in the shop you are free to peruse and even taste several varieties of tea. The prices can range from $10-100+ for a bag. They have cheap, mass-produced and prize-winning very expensive.

I highly recommend bying one the "Oriental Beauty" teas. The flavor is smooth, sweet, and without grassiness.

    Overall, interesting and quite charming.
