    • Q:

Is it busy in November? Is Friday busier than Monday?

      A:

Being that it is one of Smithsonian's, it will always be filled with tourists, it just depends on the day. November has been a busy-ish month for NGA because a lot of students are touring the museum and whatnot. Friday's do seem to be a little more… more

Looks very big from the outside, but once inside it's only two levels. Most of the famous painting like, Monet, Monat, Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, and Rafael are on the second level. The museum itself is a little lack luster. Not as grand as I hoped for.

While its good that the entire museum has been opened again for some months, the experience is lacking in some ways.

CDC vaccine cards and IDs are supposed to be checked at the entrance.  Mine was hardly looked at, even though there was no line of people waiting behind. me.  I would feel safer if I knew that the staff was diligent in checking vaccine certificates.

The prices at the main gift shop get ever more crazy as time goes by. How about a crystal necklace that once sold for a little over $100 is now $300!  That's a 300 percent increase!  Other items are similarly outrageous.
I'm sure these things wont sell - people are not stupid.  Why not have a larger Sale section? Instead, it just includes a paltry few items.  Terrible.

The National Gallery is reopened with a few changes due to Covid.  First, advanced (free) timed entry tickets must be gotten online for each member of your group.  Second, gallery occupancy is strictly limited and you may be waiting to move between galleries, particularly special exhibitions.  Third, only the lower gallery level is currently open - luckily this includes the special exhibition galleries for Degas at the Opera.  This was my whole reason for going - I have missed the opportunity to see truly splendid art in person and this exhibition, organized by the National Gallery together with the Musée d'Orsay and Musée de l'Orangerie draws together some extraordinary works.
You are currently allowed to enter the museum only from the 6th and Constitution entrance in the West building - masks must be worn at all times and family groups must remain together.  From there you are free to enter the galleries.  The Degas at the Opera exhibition is located to the right of entry, through the Early American furniture collections (which are worthy of their own visit).  Guards are posted at every gallery and direct traffic flow, ensuring that the galleries stay at Covid safe capacity levels.  What this really means for the visitor is a much easier time viewing the art works - no more trying to see over heads in crowded galleries.  No more listening to amateur pundits foisting their opinion on everyone in earshot.  No more tour groups being herded from room to room.  Instead, you can have a nearly ideal gallery experience.  You can enjoy a nearly private viewing of each work in the blessed coolness of the temperature controlled galleries and actually get close enough to read every description and caption, if that's your thing.  You can even take in an entire gallery at once and get a real feel for the organization of the exhibition.  All in all, I felt the experience was much better than pre-Covid due to the lack of crowds.  If you've been wanting to visit the National Gallery but hate crowds, now may just be the perfect time to go.

This place has such much to see, for the art lover is a must see. The east and west  wings offer two different perspective of art. One wing is modern art and another wing is newer and extravagant.  The different art is interesting to see through the museum. The east wing with the rooftop is must do specially check out the huge rooster.

I could spend days and days upon end here.   The museum offers a compendium of art history.   Don't miss the East Wing for contemporary art.

Does anyone remember the YA book about the two siblings hiding in the bathroom of an art museum and going undetected for many days?   That would be my ultimate fantasy here.  :)

There's a special exhibit of oil paintings here by Tintoretto, one of the greats of the Italian Renaissance. It's the first time that Italy has allowed its collection of Tintoretto to leave the country.

The exhibit closes July 7, 2019, so you've got some time left, but not a lot.

Tintoretto was into big; his canvases are quite large. He's credited as being the most prolific artist of the Italian Renaissance although there's some question about that. But what isn't in dispute is that he left behind a remarkable record of accomplishment.

Tintoretto's life was as rich and full of intrigue as his paintings are. The Pope, wealthy families and the movers and shakers of the time fought to have Tintoretto paint for them. Come and see what he created.

I found this installation to be well done and that's saying a lot because The National Gallery of Art is always doing a good job.

      And, lucky you, it's free.

      Grazie, National Gallery.

Okay I know it's museum food but this literally had the worst food of all the museums. Literally WHAT IS THAT PIZZA. Just look at it. I could make something more flavorful with PLAY DOUGH. That little bread roll was the only decent thing. Also please steer clear of any ranch it was so nasty it made me sick.

Typically you don't need tickets to this museum but during COVID you can go online and reserve a time for entry. This allows the museum to limit the number of visitors within the museum. I was excited to see that this museum was recently reopening in this manner and only hope other museums and landmarks in the area could take the same cue from Natl Gallery and also do ticketed entry so they can reopen to locals and tourists. We came to see the Degas exhibit 'Degas at the Opera'. It was incredible. 5-6 rooms filled with all Degas works. The ballerinas are beautifully done in his paintings. I enjoyed learning more about Degas and the era while visiting this museum. I can't wait for other featured exhibits!  Highly recommend!
