An Enjoyable Risqué Stroll at Night
4.0 of 5 bubblesJul 2023
Nakasu (中洲) is the red-light district which exists between the sandbank of the Naka River (那珂川, Nakagawa) and the Hakata River (博多川, Hakatagawa) in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is named after a popular, but very short-lived, entertainment quarter of Edo, which existed in the late 18th century. The name "Nakasu" can be translated as "the island in the middle", as Nakasu is an island between two rivers. Nakasu is the largest red-neon light district in the western Japan area after Osaka. That being said: Nakasu is a risqué area similar in nature to Kabukicho in Tokyo with its share of host and hostess clubs which may offend some people (as noted in other reviews). However, this area has a lot of character, tons of good restaurants and some great back alleys. This area is also centrally located and is right next to the local subway (Nakasukawabata Station) which makes it convenient to airport direct line and the rest of the city. It is also where you find the most centrally located Don Quijote in Fukuoka and most importantly, many of the famous yatai street food stalls. Canal city shopping center is just across the bridge. In addition, the famous Ichiran Ramen headquarters is located in this area. I really enjoyed walking around this island at night. It is perfectly safe to walk the streets and observe the nightlife of the area. In addition, it appears many of the clubs are for just for Japanese only/locals. Some are also are tourist traps to fool you to pay for overpriced drinks. I would only go into the bars with someone local who actually knows the area.

Lots of bars, karaoke, hotels, restaurants that come alive only in the night. Southern end of Nakasu island is where all the yatai stalls are located. Touristy but an experience... eating seated by the stalls but keep track of what's been ordered and be prepared to pay... it's not cheap.

Avoid this area. This area is truly the black hole area of Japan including restaurants and people. Many drunk and rude people everywhere. It’s the worst area in Japan. I went to Tokyo in most area, never seen so many rude people and bad drivers. Be very careful when you cross the road, they will not stop for you at cross walk.

There is not much more happening in Nakasu other than brothels, gentlemens bar and massage parlours. If your looking for a bar to sit and have a few drinks then your out of luck unless you want to pay a flat rate for 60mins

We came here expecting 100's of carts but probably only saw 10 - this was after 7pm (it opens at 6pm). It's definitely overhyped & overpriced as I'm guessing more & more people are no longer eating here. We walked around to a few places but many were empty expect for 1 place that was completely full. Ended up at a semi-busy place. We paid 4500yen for 2 people for 5 sticks (2 meat, 3 vegetable), 1 beer & 1 Oolong tea. Wonder if we got the foreigner price even though we spoke Japanese.

Only made for a good photo opp otherwise I'd give the food a miss.

You have to understand the culture of Japan to understand and approach Nakasu. Traditionally the geishas and the bars I took care of "needs". These are the underbelly of society primarily controlled by either the Korean, Japanese or Chinese yakuza. and this is where the men go to relieve their sexual frustrations or to blow their paychecks... There is something for everyone. From S&M parlors, crossdressing clubs to Asian sex kittens from the Philippines and even Russian blondes if you want big buxomed women. They'll let you feel them up for a fee.
to "soapland" where if you're a foreigner you might be able to find an old hag to lather you up into a sexual frenzy. Most places except the bars refuse foreigners. It is a fascinating and revealing part of a reality that most people ignore or pretend not to know about.

Disgusting red light area of Fukuoka. Host boys and snack girls come out of the woodwork to peddle flesh after about 4pm. In the background is " soap-land" with its old hags who will get you off for a fee. Usually over two hundred dollars. Rarely service foreigners who are considered diseased. Pulling the strings not far from anything is the Yakuza and chimpirra. Nakasu is a former prostitution and brothel center of the city.

Drunk salary men Cristina the streets for an overpriced massage, a few semi-strip bars and heaps of hostess snack bars - also some "Yattai" with overpriced drinks, cover charges or minimum orders, and nothing special foods. For nightlife and reasonable servings of the same (minus the seediness) try Tenjin and daimyo, where the city's "real people" go come dark.

Taste of speedier japan. Quite safe. Don't get lured into places by those guys standing in front. There are good food to be found but also so so stuff. Be prepared to pay for the experience food and otherwise. Do a review search on the web, they are usually acurate. Not really family friendly. There are similar locations in Osaka and tokyo which are much larger. I like the more relaxed pace of hakata compared to the bigger cities.
