The Nintendo Switch Won 2017, PlayStation 4 a Close Second

The Nintendo Switch Won 2017, although the Sony came in at a close second. If not for Mario and Zelda, as well as the Super Nintendo Classic, Sony very well may have taken the crown. Regardless, Gamers are the ultimate winners.

Honestly Nintendo killed it this year but I really wonder about next year. If they want to continue this momentum they need Metroid and Pokemon to release. I mean Kirby and Yoshi are great, but, they aren't killer titles. Pokemon would make the world go mad.

badz1491912d ago (Edited 1912d ago )

LOL another Nintendo fanboy so detached feom reality and declared the Switch won 2017. So funny...NOT!

"You can't simply judge by metacritic scores. I mean the Switch had two of the best games EVER come out in the span of 7 1/2 months. There are also games that in my view, like Xenoblade 2, which are better than Metacritic gives it credit for. Also Splatoon has had a ton of updates and added features since it was reviewed. So that's not always accurate."

There no bias at all here /s

The only thing the Switch has over the PS4 this year is 2 highly rated games but the PS4 still have over 2 times the amount of games rated over 75 on Meta. You can't simply ignore Meta and then say things like

"...the Switch had two of the best games EVER come out in the span of 7 1/2 months."

That is contradictory to your ignoring of the Meta you said previously. You are bias as hell.

Talking facts alone, aside from having over 2 time the amount of games over 75 on Meta, the PS4 sold more units, sold more software, release more games overall and have more exclusives than the Switch. Oh...you were also declaring the Switch as the winner because it had a record year? That's why I said you are bias as hell. The PS4 had a record year as well.

Imalwaysright1912d ago (Edited 1912d ago )

What the hell are you talking about? The word "metacritic" is nowhere to be found in this opinion piece.

badz1491912d ago

@Imalwaysright

Dude...read his comments

SuperSonic911912d ago

The way Nintendo fans in the gaming media overhyoe and overrate anything Nintendo Switch this year is mind numbingly incredible! Who ever is behind Nintendo's marketing campaign must have a huge budget. I hope there won't be a huge backlash hereafter.

1912d ago
mikeslemonade1912d ago

PS4 just beat 3DS in 4 years while the 3DS has been out for 7 years. The best Switch year isn’t even better than any of the 4 years for the PS4. And switch games are a lower standard. The hardware is limited so a 97 on metacritc is really like a 91 on PS4.

Imalwaysright1912d ago (Edited 1912d ago )

I don't start reading the comments section on the 10th or so comment so I had absolutely no idea of what you were talking about since it had nothing to do with this opinion piece. Also, even after reading his comments, your comment still makes no sense to me as this is nothing more than an opinion piece (no facts, only personal opinion) and there is no contradiction in the comments that apparently warranted your comment.

indysurfn1912d ago

What a hypocrite You say you cant ignore meta then you try to belittle a meta score of over 97 for both Mario and Zelda. They are not just over seven months....this is EVER PERIOD stop trying to mislead! Plus you lied also saying only 2. They are NOT the only two SWITCH games to get over 75 percent, that is not even a high enough goal post.

PS4 had way more hardware and I loved Horizon as much as Zelda but give credit where it is due.

gangsta_red1911d ago

It's funny to read people leave comments calling others bias for Nintendo or calling them fanboys when they leave their opinion about liking a console but then in the same breath praise and shill for the PS4.

I mean seriously...how can you not recognize you doing the same thing you chastise darklink for.

He thought the Switch won 2017, right on for him.

3-4-51911d ago

Man some of you just can't handle other people doing well in life. It's like you want only you to do good, and then you are elite about it and it really matters to you more than anybody that you "are the best"...like you are having some competition but nobody else is in it except you super hardcore sony fanboys.

You are delusional.

Normal sony fans are ok....I'm one of them...Some of you just can't handle Nintendo or Microsoft doing good at anything for even 1 day. It "triggers" you, and you get pretty defensive and negative towards anybody who doesn't agree.

Plus all the likes whenever you act like that as well.

I wonder how many of you are paid trolls.

Like wake up...it's ok that other people are successful. There is room for a ton of people to have success.

Why are all of you super hardcore mega sony fanboys so obsessed with bragging about everything.

Don't you get that it's a bad look for you? How do you not see it.

Just enjoy life and go play the awesome games that sony offers.

NewMonday1911d ago

both Sony and Nintendo did great, personal taste will inevitably tilt opinion one way or another.

Damthatsword1911d ago

shhhhh. your embarrassing yourself. its cringe worthy getting that amount of likes with such a revulting and childish attitude. speaks wonders on the fanbase of this site.

GamingIVfun1911d ago

Have to disagree, Sony brought the first and third party games this year. Nintendo comes in a close second.

showtimefolks1911d ago

Ps4 won 2017 and it's a 4 year old console that had its best holiday sales in brand history

Ps4 had the most games and most exclusives

Ps4 is the best selling and best supported console of 2017

Where were all you Nintendo fan boys with wiiu

Old McGroin1911d ago

@ badz149

"That is contradictory to your ignoring of the Meta you said previously. You are bias as hell."

Says the incredibly biased PS4 fanboy!

badz1491911d ago

@OldMcGroin

Me? Bias? How? I know I am a Sony fan but where in my comment did I praised Sony purely based on my own subjectivity? In fact, I didn't even praise Sony at all in my comment but only provided facts about their performance this year. Prove me wrong then instead of just name calling.

@Indysurfn

2? Seriously, learn to read, dude. And where did I belittle Zelda and Mario in my comment? Just like this opinion piece, you're making things up!

1911d ago
badz1491910d ago

@uRaDecepticon

"Because the only games I remember coming out for Ps4 everyone was talking about was Horizon and ...nope that's it."

So...because of your ignorance toward the PS4 in 2017, you agreed that the Switch won? LOL thank you for proving my point that Nintendo fanboys are a delusional bunch!

I guess if you only play games "everyone was talking about", so you just played Zelda and Mario all of last year on the Switch, right? Because those are the only ones people were talking about.

michellelynn09761910d ago

Mario Rabbids, Fire Emblem, Splatoon 2, MK 6DX, Golf Story, Battle Chef Bregade, BM Zero, XC2, Arms, etc. I could throw in Fire Emblem on the 3ds, Metroid 2 and Pokemon as well.

badz1491910d ago

@michellelynn0976

LOL really? So we are just going to make a list of games now? You do know that the PS4 had the most exclusives last year and also 3rd party games not even available on the Switch, right? Making a list of these games are just gonna show how one sided this opinion piece really is.

I still believe if Pokemon Switch is a new gen, then we won’t see it until late 2019 at the earliest. Pokemon gens are never less than 3 years apart, and Sun and Moon are only a year old. Metroid I imagine is still in early development. We’ll likely see games like TLoU 2 and Death Stranding launch before Metroid, which is saying something about far off it is.

I agree though. There is apparently Animal Crossing, which is popular, but doesn’t necessarily push hardware. It sounds like Nintendo might be trying to push out some new IP’s, but more often than not, their new IP’s typically don’t see commercial success, especially not their non-traditional ones. It seems Splatoon has been the only exception to that rule in the last 15 years. Same story goes for third party titles with them.

Switch will continue doing well, no doubt, but I still wonder if they’re starting to get ahead of themselves each time they raise their sales forecast.

Gemmol1912d ago

Animal crossing push out over 20 million sales on the DS, and you say its not that big of a franchise, that franchise alone sold.more games then the whole uncharted series, so if you think animal.crossing is nothing then i am.curious to see what you think of uncharted, last of us and all those other Sony franchise that sold.less than it, and don't bring up sales don't matter

DialgaMarine1912d ago (Edited 1912d ago )

I never said Animal Crossing wasn’t a huge franchise; I said it doesn’t really push hardware. Every Nintendo system since the Gamecube has had an Animal Crossing title, and while they each sell fairly well, systems like Gamecube, 3DS, and Wii U didn’t exactly get a lot of hardware from them; no way can even a portion of DS and Wii’s success be attributed to that franchise lol

Also, just a FYI, Animal Crossing DS sold just over 12 million copies; not 20 million. Also no, it hasn’t sold more than the Uncharted series; not even close.

NotoriousWhiz1911d ago

@Dialga, my wife bought a 3ds when animal crossing came out, so I have really no idea why you would say that Animal crossing doesn't push hardware. Maybe not to us "core" gamers, but definitely to the casual gamers.

TKCMuzzer1912d ago

I don't think the Switch won this year. I have bought one and yes Mario is good etc but the console or the Nintendo environment is to far behind and lack the sense of Nintendo community is worrying. In today's connected world Nintendo seems out of touch and the basic features missing from a £300 console is not good enough.
Its basics (downloading one thing at a time when you have fibre), but what best sums it up when in Mario you get to the little side timed challenges and it you have to connect to see the world leader boards instead of already being populated. It stands out because the game is so seamless, then Nintendo's stuck in time online interrupts it. There should be an optional achievement/trophy system to add replay ability and goals. The whole eco system is a bit clunky and out of touch.
The games are good but video games have moved on and there is more to it, when I am on my Switch it feels like i am the only one, when I am on my PS4 I feel part of something. This is only my opinion and I understand others will feel different but at the moment it just feels a sum of it parts and with the big hitters out of the way whats next?

notachance1912d ago

I love the switch, think they killed it, but next year I think there's going to be a huge drop-off. sustaining this momentum is just not feasible IMO.

guywazeldatatt1912d ago

If Pokemon comes out things will explode next year. Or Metroid. If they have Metroid, Pokemon, Yoshi, and Kirby, and then maybe a Smash port, I think that they have a chance to compete with Sony's lineup. Regardless, gamers win, the two companies are killing it.

nintendoswitchfan1912d ago

Okay, Pokemon comes out in December or November, but still, they can't just have that, Yoshi, and Kirby. Even Metroid isn't a series that sells a ton. There's really no other franchise after like Mario and Zelda. Unless they do an Animal Crossing. Pikmin will just be okay. Do a Zelda HD collection with SS remaster and then TP and WW packed in as well and then we may be talking bc people will buy that up. Also you're forgetting third-party support. That needs to keep up and not with niche JRPG games. I could see a game like Splatoon and Mario Kart having VERY long legs though.

1911d ago
Sono4211911d ago

Honestly i can't stand your insane amount of Nintendo bias, so I refuse to click on your site, but you are absolutely dreaming if you think the Switch Pokemon game is coming out in 2018, Prime 4 would be more likely and I think even that is not coming out in 2018. Would I love for both to come out in 2018? Well not really actually, 2018 is already packed with games, but I certainly would not complain if they came out in 2018, but as I said, they won't, i'm willing to bet my life's savings on it.

UCForce1912d ago (Edited 1912d ago )

It is impressive. I hope the competition will keep focusing on making great Exclusive games for consumers.

guywazeldatatt1912d ago

I feel like Sony and Nintendo are pushing each other, where like Microsoft is now lost in the background.

1911d ago
guywazeldatatt1912d ago

@VINNIEPAZ, instead of petty insults you should actually add to the conversation.

VINNIEPAZ1912d ago (Edited 1912d ago )

Sony killed it with great exclusives, I loved Neir and about to play Last Guardian. Played the hell out of Zelda and my girl love Odyssey. So yeah... Wait? Am I supposed to bash Xbox at this point? Sorry, still playing Horde on Gears, and have Cup head loaded when I can get to it.

My 2 cents? Idk.... I buy all the systems and play everything I want. You see, I'm what you call a GAMER. I actually WANT all platforms to succeed. I'm crazy huh? Yeah I know, stupid me for wanting to play games.

I actually bought a Wii U JUST for Monster hunter and Bayonetta. And guess what? WORTH EVERY DAMN PENNY for those 2 games! IMO

I loved both Nintendo and Sega (Nes\Snes Genesis) back in the day. Didn't have to bash one or the other. And I had a damn blast on both.

Gamers over fanboys

EDIT: Dude whatever, best of luck with your gaming, somehow I can find fun on all 3, so whatever. Stay salty

guywazeldatatt1912d ago

@vinniepaz I'm not a fanboy, I have my xbox, I play it with my brother all the time, I just look moving forward they have had no exclusives this past year and haven't announced anything moving forward. I WANT them to succeed because I'm a GAMER, not a fanboy, but I'm brutally blunt sometimes and they're lack of exclusives is killing them and will kill them this upcoming year if they don't start putting out some big titles. It's getting to the point where Nintendo and Sony are going to leave them behind in the dust. That's just my honest opinion, not fanboying.

balance2theforce1911d ago (Edited 1911d ago )

I hear you, but I wish we were just as quick to point out people not adding to the conversation when there are people that just come into Nintendo threads like this and hate all day. Same thing goes on with a lot of the Microsoft articles that I've ever been in or glanced over. Shit, the second comment went right into calling the person a Fanboy and polishing sony's...whatever. not to mention Ree obligatory and unnecessary bashing of Microsoft/Xbox in the thread that didn't need to be there. What does ANY of that bring to the conversation?

Not to mention there are some in this very thread that you could have said that to well before they even commented yet you remained silent while jumping on this person. So why are we singling them out? I can agree when there's just nothing being brought to the conversation, but there's a lot of that going on that seemed to go unchecked. It can't be about insults, because again, the second comment in the thread came right out calling people fanboys and shamelessly shilling for sony after all. Kind of disingenuous to single them out for not bringing much to the conversation when there's a lot of that going on unchecked. Let's keep it legit is all I'm saying.

In any case, Nintendo had a phenomenal year. And no matter how many people coming here and try to detract from that, that happened and it's in the books. The future just like with any console, product or anything else remains to be seen. However, I have little doubt that they have more in the pipeline than we are probably aware of. You see how a new IP like Arms and a familiar one like Bayonetta 3 just snuck out there after all.

-Foxtrot1912d ago (Edited 1912d ago )

Nah Sony won it for me

Horizon, Nier, Nioh, Persona, Crash Bandicoot, GT Sport, Uncharted TLL etc

Just had more variety in my opinion and offered different experiences. Take away Mario and Zelda and you don’t have much, even something like Kingdom Battle while different they had to use Mario characters, if they were brand new human like characters it wouldn’t have had that appeal it did.

Let’s see how long it takes for this to become a “fanboy” thing

Keywords: “in my opinion”

UCForce1912d ago

I understand what you mean, but the competition is good thing. Because it’s allow them to be more aggressive with their brand and find a way to pressure the consumer.

guywazeldatatt1912d ago

competition drives innovation. I mean even a big wig at Sony says they have to pay attention to the Switch. That's a GOOD thing. Because of competition, and really the Switch is going to be a massive success, we will get better games. The gamers win again and Xbone is lost somewhere, which is kinda sad.

guywazeldatatt1912d ago

Obviously it's an opinion piece :P

I don't disagree about variety. I also take into consideration like the Switch came out in march and is brand new, the PS4 is finally coming into its own. For me, Xenoblade 2 was my favorite game this year. I wrote articles literally saying Zelda would be GOTY, and it was, but that wasn't really my feelings, just looking at it analytically and how outlets and even TGA pick GOTY.

Regardless I feel like Nintendo and Sony are pushing eachother and honestly they are great consoles I think everyone should own. The xbox is lagging behind badly. Hopefully it leads to more innovation and great games from both companies.

VINNIEPAZ1912d ago (Edited 1912d ago )

Is it IMPOSSIBLE for you to make ANY comment NOT ending in you bashing Xbox? That's like 3 just here? Jesus....

And you admit you swing back and for and is/was a fan boy. You get hate on both sides. Try to enjoy games for once instead of being just another fan boy. But you PS boys stick together here so...

guywazeldatatt1912d ago

@vinnie last year I was singing xbox praises and fanboys loved me, now I'm being harsh and you all hate me. they are lagging behind. like three exclusives all year? that's pathetic.

nintendoswitchfan1912d ago

Microsoft is just playing it close to the vest. You know they have a ton of things they're working on that isn't that rare game that's the pirate thing. I think we get Halo 6 this year and Gears 5 not long after. Microsoft isn't stupid. They'll get the job done.

nintendoswitchfan1912d ago

I don't think you're a fanboy, those are all some of the best games this year. For me it's Nier, Horizon, and Zelda. Also surprisingly I loved COD WWII. Best COD since MW. I was done with the series until I played that.

Theknightofnights1912d ago

If you take away Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda you still have Splatoon 2, Arms, Mario Kart Deluxe, Pokken Tournament, Fire Emblem Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. That's still not bad.

sk8ofmnd1912d ago

Exactly... mario, ssb, zelda, and mario kart are nintendos biggest franchises... only 1 of those didnt come out this year and expected to drop next year and also be a port with a few added things.

Id really like to know what next year tops mario and zelda?? I could see a luigi game being amazing but again not for 2018.

Sonys 2017 crushes the competition and 2018 is no slouch

narsaku1911d ago

That's adorable, Nier/Nioh aren't, "Sony'", games.

Take away Horizon and the Ps3 port Persona 5 and u got a shitty remaster, a dlc and a crappy racing sim.

Damn man you should think before u speak.

-Foxtrot1911d ago

I didn’t say they were I just said they were on their system

Think before you speak....jeez, people who don’t take their own advice

1907d ago
wonderfulmonkeyman1911d ago

Chalking the success of the games up to the characters alone is just asinine.
It's like saying Horizon only sold well because it was on PS4; it's bullshit reasoning.

No way was PS4 a close second. It clearly had more quality content to offer this year than NS.

http://www.metacritic.com/b...
http://www.metacritic.com/b...

guywazeldatatt1912d ago

You can't simply judge by metacritic scores. I mean the Switch had two of the best games EVER come out in the span of 7 1/2 months. There are also games that in my view, like Xenoblade 2, which are better than Metacritic gives it credit for. Also Splatoon has had a ton of updates and added features since it was reviewed. So that's not always accurate. PS4 had a lot more games as well due to the fact that it's been out for several years, while this was the Switch's first year. Most people aren't going to go out and buy 10 games for a console. I own more than most because I get a lot of review copies, but, most switch owners probably only have five games but those five games are really really really good. PS4 was excellent too. I also was just looking at exclusives, not any multi-platform games and mostly first-party.

I guess one of the big things is, did you think horizon was better than Zelda? if you do, then you're more likely to think the PS4 had a better year. It's so close though, IMO, and gamers again are the ultimate winners.

XabiDaChosenOne1912d ago

"You can't simply judge by metacritic scores."
"I mean the Switch had two of the best games EVER come out in the span of 7 1/2 months."
So which is it? Because I know your basing your second comment off of metacritic scores.

Anzil1912d ago

Contradiction at its finest

1912d ago
FallenAngel19841912d ago

Even if you wanted to ignore the Metascores, you can’t ignore the amount of games that arrived on one platform over the other.

The variety one had over the other would put it on top. Switch had a lot to offer, but I don’t see it it offering less would objectively put it on top of PS4.

Subjectively they may seem close on a personal level depending on what type of gamer you are, but when looking at everything throughout the year it’s clear that PS4 did more to satisfy consumers.

nintendoswitchfan1912d ago

I think his point is like quality over quantity, but even then, PS4 has so many amazing exclusives. The Switch is great no doubt, but honestly you cannot even compare so the article is flawed to begin with. 9 months for the Switch, a few years for the PS4 and games that have been in development for much longer, like Horizon, which is my overall GOTY.

nintendoswitchfan1912d ago

There are so many people with different ideas/viewpoints that metacritic is pretty much on point with those scores. The only ones that are inflated are older games because there are less reviews, like OoT (at least last I checked, and not OoT 3D). Now you have like 60-100 reviews per game. It's pretty accurate as far as quality goes.
