There are examples of new hardware launches that weren't impactful like the Switch is, such as the Wii U and Vita. Also, I'd think that if Sony launched a PS5 with the equivalent first party releases as Nintendo's provided this year it'd be very exciting for Sony fans.
Nintendo needed this turnaround after people ignored the WiiU. Sad really as the WiiU is a good system but it's nice to see many get a switch and enjoy the games of Splatoon and MK8 and BotW (I dont have a switch yet but i do have those games).
The $200 PS4 was a real seller though so maybe Sony won hardware but overall I'd say Nintendo won out when you combine hardware AND software. It's a good year for Nintendo.
There is no problem in giving Nintendo credit for a great 2017. For them they rekindled their brand coming out very strong and attractive. For Sony, it was straight games and the chance to show their base whats coming. That is a win. Nothing was 'stolen'. It was Nintendo's to take and they got it. That doesn't even effect Sony's year.
True, for me though what was pretty impressive is that they managed to turn things around with the Switch which is a high concept that was not done before and it paid off. Then there is Zelda and Mario this year.
While Horizon is better than BOTW I believe Mario is the goty. The best Mario since Mario 64.
As much as I am a PS fan Nintendo will always hold a special place in gaming for me.
Sony just had the best Black Friday in its history... 4 years into a gen... in 2017. People are just impressed Nintendo did not fail, the games they released had absolutely nothing to do with the hardware because they were already in production for the wii u... I would say it is more impactful for Sony to go against two new launch consoles and still have the best Black Friday in history of Sony.
The real story/achievement lies in the fact that 2 out 3 competitors had new console luanches in 2017, Nintendo had Mario and fricking Zelda as well, while both of them hyped these new consoles literally for years, only to claim 2nd and 3rd in sales?
Its clear that the PS brand has transcended to new popularity/awareness heights, so much so that years of hype, millions in marketing and the absolute best counter effort by their 2 rivals did not make a dent. Not only that but ps4 sales broke Black Friday records
That said, Nintendo has turned heads, they did, they have our attention because they know how to make excellent games to push/support their platform. Thats exactly what Sony has been doing all along, since the ps3 days, infact - create game after game after game and dare into 'new' things/experiences (VR) when everyone else is playing it safe.
Now ask yourselves, does Nindendo really deserve to win 2017?
Exactly. The fact that it is even debatable if Playstation won this year is pathetic considering BOTH xbox and Nintendo released new hardware this year.
Even in a year where Playstation has had no new major hardware releases, they still managed to be the center of attention and dwarf their competition's COMBINED sales...
Oh please, what first party exclusives are you up to your neck in on PS4? What's the last real good exclusive we got? Horizon Zero Dawn? Some would say Persona 5 (Not even sure if that's first party, not my type of game). Switch already got Mario and Zelda, with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 this week. 3 AAA extremely high rated franchises within 7 months. Everything great for the PS4 is coming in 2018. We started off the year pretty great, but the second half was extremely dull. Although I do believe you're flooded with games you need to play, every time I check a Nintendo article you're in here trolling with multiple comments.
@xPh- "hat's the last real good exclusive we got?"
I'm playing GTSport right now and its a blast!
"Switch already got Mario and Zelda, with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 this week"
I'm sure they are great games....have fun. (not sure why so mad)
Don't see any reason for personal attacks. I own many systems and play many games. This gen its PC, 3DS, PS4 and soon Switch. So...."trolling"? You mean me being a Nintendo fan not liking how some of their games turn up? I mean, will you folks keep saying the same thing when I actually own one too? Am I not allowed to not like what Nintendo does? lol
Relax bud. Keep it on topic, no reason to be upset. I like Skyrim too, but you won't see me listing years old ports as reasons to be excited about PS4 games, first party and otherwise.
" 3 AAA extremely high rated franchises within 7 months" Thats great, have fun. Granted, I'm playing a bit more highly rated games on PS4 "within 7 months" .. You have fun with those 3 games, really, I'll have fun with Horizon, GT Sport, Gravity Rush 2, Persona 5, Yakuza Zero, Yakzua 1 remake, Nier, Nioh, KH 2.8 and too many 3rd party titles to really list (its a HUGE amount). (lolz, even bought Mass Effect Andromeda recently used at a good price)
I didn't buy PS4 to have 7 months of playing 3 games...... Nothing wrong with those games either, I just buy different games. Even with I buy a Switch, I'm not buying anything you listed...you like those Nintendo games....I don't.
I like Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Mario and Luigi RPG series, old school Kirby (none of the yarn junk please), Pikmin and really thats about it. So....yea. You like those games and nothing wrong with that, but I don't care for Mario or Xenoblade. Played Zelda on Wii U btw, didn't like it and glade I never bought a Switch to get it. Different taste bud.
" what first party exclusives are you up to your neck in on PS4?" - you.
"I'm up to my neck with a flood of games that I still need to play." - Me.
Stop forcing narratives please. I'm still playing more first party games right now, then I was ever going to play this year on Nintendo Switch ie zero. Nothing on Switch right now has me wanting to buy the system today to play it. I'm going to wait.
Have fun though, no need to take this so seriously, you like different games, I like different games. No need for this strange hatred bud...
So stop forcing narratives huh? Yet you ended your original comment with "Trust me I'm not listing six-year-old ports as something to be excited about".
Then replied again with "I didn't buy PS4 to have 7 months of playing 3 games"
Then again "I'm playing a bit more highly rated games on PS4 "within 7 months" .. You have fun with those 3 games"
Maybe you should take your own advice. Since you love playing this "forced narrative" that you apparently want me to stop, but you're actually not playing higher rated games on the PS4 in the past 7 months. Nothing on PS4 (I'll let you even include your precious 3rd party titles since you think I only own 3 games) in the past 7 months comes close to being rated as high as Mario or Zelda.
"So...."trolling&qu ot;? You mean me being a Nintendo fan not liking how some of their games turn up? I mean, will you folks keep saying the same thing when I actually own one too? Am I not allowed to not like what Nintendo does?"
When you have over 20,000 comments, and every single Nintendo article your name is under almost every other comment, with the things you say? Yeah you're being a troll. Half of your comments aren't even worth having a real discussion. Not to mention you even said you down own a Switch. Yet you're in every single article. So when you down own something and your making sarcastic comments, why would anyone take you serious? There's no "strange hatred". It's called an observation. Again, you have over 20,000 comments. You're not hard to miss, especially when half your comments in Nintendo article are trolling.
there were 143 game rated over 75 on the PS4 this year alone vs 61 on the Switch. that's over 2 times as many! unless you want to admit only Mario, Zelda & Xenoblade matter for Nintendo fanboys. if not, then the numbers don't lie. as far as providing the best games this year alone, the PS4 is better overall.
Ummmm yes? The console has been out for 8 months, the PS4 has been out for 3 years. Only having double when they've been on the market 3 times as long doesn't really matter. Especially when those games can be played on other platforms. Had EDMIX wanted to have a real conversation, instead of trolling, the conversation would have went a different way.
"The console has been out for 8 months, the PS4 has been out for 3 years. Only having double when they've been on the market 3 times as long doesn't really matter."
learn to read, dude. that list is only for 2017! and don't give me the "PS4 has been out longer" shit as BoTW is basically a Wii U port, MK8 deluxe is a remaster, Splatoon 2 is more of the same and Mario Odyssey was in development when they basically left Wii U to die! and oh...
"Especially when those games can be played on other platforms."
same as the Switch list too. many of those games are multiplats where the Switch versions are the worst versions and the PS4 does have more exclusives this year and if we include games that can't be played on the Switch, the list will be longer than just exclusives.
Personally I’d be excited for any type of quality game no matter how old it is. I was interested in playing KH1.5 + 2.5, Final Fantasy VII HD, Final Fantasy IX HD, Final Fantasy Type-0, Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy, Resident Evil Remake, God of War 3 Remastered, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition & WipEout: Omega Collection released on PS4 as well as increasing the backlog on my PS3. I might even get Okami HD again next month.
All of that plus more recent titles has me more swamped than I’ve ever been in my entire history of gaming.
@ Pear
Not everyone only plays first party titles 😑
That sounds like a stupid elitist thing to spend hundreds of dollars on a console only to have limiting factors on the type of games you’d play on it.
I'm looking to play the KH Collection before KH3 comes out, I want to buy it but I just don't have the time like I used to. This new business is keeping up longer and longer, hopefully if i do well in a year or so, I can hire help and actually focusing on relaxing and gaming more. I"m trying to get like 4 hours a day of some solid gaming, but its tough. I still have games in spring, still in the package lol
As for this xphear, I don't get this idea that someone only plays first party, that might fly for Nintendo fans, but that sounds like its because its the only content that is really coming to that system in terms of AAA support. Even I don't buy all Sony exclusives, I didn't even buy Uncharted 4 and many other games. (i might later on though)
Nah PS4 still had more quality games released this year than NS
