    Enjoy art and great food.
This is a beautiful museum and it is free. Go and enjoy and afternoon walking around the beautiful art. The restaurant on the third floor is a must for a fun soda and homemade French fries. They look to have classes also.

    Well balanced presentations
Our hometown is full of a variety of well-known museums, many of them focusing on specific topics or areas. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, offers a well-balanced presentation of a variety of areas. We only wanted to spend about 2 hours, and were able to pick the areas in the museum that we were interested in and fully appreciate these presentations perfectly. The floor plans are well laid out and illustrated in the museum maps.

Best Museum I have ever been to!!!
I have been to The Louvre, D’Orsay, British Museum, and many others around the planet. I must say this museum far exceeded my expectations!!!! The museum building itself is a work of art. I especially enjoyed that all exhibits weren’t cluttered on the walls or the floor areas. The variety of art was fantastic. Then in the Impressionist exhibition to see Degas’ Ballerina not glass enclosed!!!!! All for no fee. Even parking is validated so free!

One of the best art museums I have visited
Excellent museum- huge collection in a beautiful building. Free admission unless you visit special exhibitions. Easily takes two visits or more to see all of the art. Easily one of the very best art museums we have visited. Only critique is the Best cafe- really high prices for mediocre food.

    A Museum Bug's Delight
We had heard about this museum for years, but experiencing it was something else. Immense collection, beautifully displayed. In two visits we probably only covered 25% of the holdings. One fine work after another. A world -class museum.

A top notch museum - highly recommend.
We are a well-traveled couple who have visited museums throughout the world. We traveled to Richmond for an event a few days ago and had some free time. Spur of the moment, we decided to visit this museum for a few hours. We loved it! The exhibitions and collections are excellent, and the space is beautiful. Highly recommend! Could easily have spent several more hours here.

    Not To Be Missed
Wonderful museum. Diverse collections in an architecturally interesting facility. The displays were well laid out and kept your interest while walking from room to room. We enjoyed the Art Deco and Art Nouveau displays, the South Asian Indian sculptures, and especially the contemporary art. It's a huge museum, so leave plenty of time or visit often, and it's free!

"Amuse" Restaurant on the third floor of the VMFA is a gem not to be missed.
I went to the VMFA museum following a visit to the History Museum that was literally across a parking lot from the VMFA . Because my blood sugar was low and and he history museum had only had sandwiches I needed something more substantial. i was directed by the guard to "Amuse" on the 3rd floor where i found a hidden gem--that in my view was not only better than any other museum restaurant that I have eaten in; it was better than anywhere else I ate on my vacation. The staff was attentive and the swordfish I had was excellent. The museum has some interesting pieces; though I found some of the predestination too eclectic for my tastes. If you are in Richmond you should check out "Amuse"; and check out the art while you are there (admission to the museum is free).

    Massive Museum
I visited the museum in October 2023. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a massive museum. I was very pressed for time so I just visited the East Asian Art section which had Chinese art and Japanese art. The cafe was very good as well including the sculptures / statues outside. I hope to return to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts next year and spend a lot more time there and explore the rest of the museum.

Put the Virginia Museum of Fine Art at the Top of Your List
It is well worth a visit. Surprisingly it was free. It is known for its Fabergé egg and other Russian decorative arts collection, but there is much more to see. The art is nicely displayed with thoughtful explanations nearby each piece.

Pleasantly surprised and would love to visit again, they have it all. The museum is free, although there was one exhibit that charged. I didn't go as time was an issue. There is everything from ancient civilizations to modern day art. Faberge and Tiffany. A nice restaurant, a cafe and a gift shop. Plenty of seating outside too if you want to get something and sit outside in nice weather.

This is the best Hopper exhibit I have ever seen. The collection included not only many of Hopper's iconic works, but also paintings, etchings, and photographs by some of his contemporaries, which provided illuminating context, as did the interpretative labels. We enjoyed seeing his wife's postcards from their road trips, and the interactive maps were a great use of technology to expand and enhance the experience. The recreation of a motel room from one of his paintings was uncanny its dimension and detail, and in the perfection of sunlight falling through the "window." I'm glad we made the trip to see it.

Going early was key: we went at 10:00 on a week day, and by the time we left, it was quite crowded. The museum shop is as well-curated as the artwork--I found some delightful gifts for friends and family.

Relatively few patrons on an early December weekday visit, our first, and I am puzzled how I have not heard more of this fine art institution. Housed in a grand modern airy building with a very broad collection. Started with the American collection and an introduction by a docent on the Worsham-Rockefeller bedroom installation and the anonymous donor's gift of Durand's Progress. I only started to explore the other galleries after admiring the Fabrege collection in wonder. The Art Deco and Art Nouveau furniture exhibits are unique, and there is wide range of contemporary art. Given the wide range especially decorative arts, painting, and sculptures, I would recommend a much better plan than I had adopted, but am optimistic that I will have an opportunity to return to this fine institution. The gift shop was open and offers a great range of gifts. Oh, did I mention the outdoor sculpture garden (Chloe or Red Reeds)?

One of my favorite places. They have excellent classes for kids. The museum is FREE, aside from the special exhibits (which you shouldn't miss). The grounds are wonderfully maintained and fun to explore. My kids and I are here at least 2x a month.

The Edward Hopper exhibit was exceptionally curated and a real joy. Went at 1130 on a Sunday morning during last week of the show and was busy but not overbearing. The VMFA’s permanent exhibits are most enjoyable, particularly the ancient Roman and Egyptian sections and the Faberge collection is extraordinary.

I think this is my 2nd review for the Museum of Fine Arts here in Richmond. But I cannot say enough about how wonderful this treasure is. This museum goes out of its way to make itself available and of great interest to the community. Not only is it free of charge, but every week they have events that offer visitors a wonderful experience. For instance every Friday night, you can participate in a free 30 minute or 60 minute tour led by a museum docent talking about some of their favorite exhibits. They have food, live music, indoor and outdoor spaces to relax. I try to visit at least once every couple of months. I still find fascinating and beautiful things among their collection that I have never seen before.

We spent a rainy Sunday morning here and after 2 1/2 hours realized we must return tomorrow. Its 2 acre floor space is separated into 10 galleries, each full of items of superb quality. Just a few special ones we liked: 1924 Sevres Vase, 1900 Tiffany 'Punch Bowl with 3 Ladles', 1765 India marble Pavillion with 1160 Jina statue, 1898 mahogany desk/chair and 1912 stained glass window, both by Jacques Gruber, 13th C wood life-sized Japanese Bodhisattva, 1902 "Venetian Tavern" by John Singer Sargent, 18th C Tibetan silk embroidery and one from the 20th C.
Outstanding museum.

The VMFA is has a little bit of a lot of things from the archaeological to the modern. It's small but with a good variety. So they have one room of Greek and Roman archaeology (plus part of another), some pre-Columbian cases, a couple of small rooms of African, a section of modern art, a room full of British silver etc. They usually have one major ticketed special exhibit.

At the time of this review, they're still doing some renovations but the majority of the museum is open. There's a pay parking garage with plenty of spots and loaner umbrellas.

What an amazing gem of a place! We were in Richmond for an event and went on a whim when we had free afternoon. This was a delightful find: a free museum with such interesting exhibits, both indoors and out. Really loved the eclectic nature of the collection and exhibits, from a top display of Faberge (with an interesting backstory) to a collection about a local natural wonder to contemporary edgy art. The outdoor grounds are lovely, with interesting sculptures and spaces. We also enjoyed the cafe. If you are in this city, can highly recommend making it a priority to visit

This museum is fantastic and it's free!! Parking is $6.00 in a covered garage a short walk from the entrance. Check out the sculpture garden before you go into the museum itself. We spent 4 hrs at a comfortable pace and saw almost everything. This museum is not overwhelming and easy to navigate. It wasn't crowded and we were really able to thoroughly enjoy each gallery. I loved the Faberge exhibit. It was incredible. Don't miss the gallery filled with beautiful jewelry pieces either. I live in New York and I would say this museum rates with some of the best in NYC.
