Clarence L. "Biggie" Munn Ice Arena has been the site of countless memorable games and the home of some of the greatest teams in Michigan State history.

The ice surface at the Clarence L. "Biggie" Munn Ice Arena was dedicated in honor of legendary hockey coach Ron Mason on Oct. 7, 2023.

The home of Spartan hockey has re-established itself as one of the top arenas in the country with a $26.2 million expansion project that was completed in the fall of 2022.

Munn Ice Arena regularly welcomes one of the best home crowds in the collegiate game and provides an undeniable advantage as Spartan teams have posted an all-time winning percentage of .669 in the building. Michigan State has ranked in the top 10 of attendance nationally in eight of the last nine years (excluding 2020-21). MSU's average home attendance of 5,767 in 2022-23 ranked eighth in the nation.

Munn Arena, which was dedicated Nov. 1, 1974, recently received its largest and most extensive expansion to date, as the addition which was completed in the fall of 2022 provides not only a new team dressing room, but also a video theatre, a state-of-the-art weight room, an athletic training room with its own cutting edge treatment availability, a player lounge, and brand new (and expanded) office space for the hockey staff.  In addition, the facility finally has a "front door" - a main entrance with the Ron Mason Hall of Hockey, a showplace for the program's rich history.

On October 7, 2023, the ice surface was dedicated in honor of longtime, legendary hockey coach and athletic director Ron Mason.  Mason guided the Spartans for 23 seasons (1979-2002) and won 924 men's college hockey games over a 36-season head-coaching career at Lake Superior State University (1966-73), Bowling Green State University (1973-79) and Michigan State University (1979-2002), with 635 of those wins coming behind the bench of the Spartan hockey program.  He retired from coaching as the all-time wins leader and still holds the No. 2 spot all-time.

With continual improvements since the 2013, the facility also boasts high-definition video boards, LED ribbon boards, increased chairback seating, a recent replacement of all bleacher seating, increased ADA compliant seating sections.  In 2013,  Munn became one of the first college hockey arenas to install an LED lighting system, and the building's ice plant and HVAC systems were completely replaced, along with adding new boards and glass at the cost of more than $6 million in 2015.  The building has boasted luxury boxes and club seating since the 1999-2000 season.

When Munn Ice Arena, named in honor of late Spartan football coach and athletic director Biggie Munn, was built, it was a smashing attendance success. With the Spartans playing exciting and winning hockey, Munn Ice Arena drew 118,875 during its first year of operation in 1974-75 and 154,880 in 1975-76, a mark that still stands for total home attendance in one season. The Spartans sold out their game against Northern Michigan on Dec. 19, 1985, and Munn Ice Arena has routinely featured raucous home crowds since. Munn had a sellout streak which lasted more than 17 full seasons and 323 consecutive regular-season games from 1985-2004.  MSU drew at least 100,000 fans for 25 consecutive seasons and set a single-season record with an average of 6,722 fans in 1986-87.  The Spartans sold out the final eight games of 2022-23, with a building capacity crowd of 6,555.

Designed by Daverman Associates of Grand Rapids as a hockey-only facility, Munn Ice Arena avoids the scheduling conflicts found in other buildings.

With nearly 3,000 chairback seats and several ADA platforms installed in 2015, the official seating capacity of Munn Arena is 6,114.
