It all starts when Chloe makes friends with Mr Stink, the local tramp. Yes, he smells a bit. But when it looks like he might be driven out of town, Chloe decides to hide him in the garden shed.
Now Chloe’s got to make sure no one finds out her secret. And speaking of secrets, there just might be more to Mr Stink than meets the eye- or the nose.
Teaching Ideas and Resources:
English
- Can you think of other words to describe pleasant or unpleasant smells?
- Retell the story from the point of view of Mr. Stink’s dog, Duchess.
- Chloe’s little sister Annabelle is described as ‘poisonous’. What does this mean?
- Chloe has lots of questions for Mr. Stink at the beginning of the story. Can you think of some more that you would like to ask him?
- Chloe writes a story about a girl to is sent to a school where all the teachers are secretly vampires. Could you think what might happen at the end of this story?
- Chloe’s mum makes a list of policies that she would set if she were to become a Member of Parliament. What policies would you set to improve things where you live?
- Write a new version of the newspaper article that the journalist creates after meeting Mr. Stink in the Crumb family’s kitchen.
- Imagine the telephone conversation between the Prime Minster and Mr. Stink. What might they say to each other?

- Think of some questions that you could ask the author about the story. Watch this short video clip from him:
Maths
- Look at Annabelle’s timetable. Can you think of questions that could be asked about it? e.g. How long does Chloe spend at school?… Chloe finishes scuba-diving at 9am. How long does she have until she has to go to show jumping?
- Make up some Maths questions using the special offers in Raj’s shop.
Science
- Learn about our nose and how we smell.
- What other senses do we have? How do these help us?
- Chloe gives Mr. Stink some sausages. Can you create a healthy meal that Mr. Stink might enjoy?
Computing
- Listen to the audiobook version of the story. Could you record your own version of the story, with expression, sound effects and music?
- Use publishing software to create the leaflets / posters that Chloe’s mum uses to persuade people to vote for her as a Member of Parliament.
Design Technology
- Design the layout of a luxurious shed in which Chloe could hide Mr. Stink.
Art
- Look at the illustrations and draw your own picture of Mr. Stink.
- The book includes an illustration of a bad smell. Can you draw a picture to show what a good smell might look like?
- Design a new dress that Chloe could go campaigning with her mum in.
- Draw some of the old photographs that Mr. Stink might have to show his life in the past.
Physical education
- Practise your bowling skills so you can throw things as expertly as Mr. Stink!
PSHE
- Chloe becomes humiliated when she has the word ‘LOSER’ stuck to her back. Why did Rosamund do this? How did it make her feel? What should she do if she feels bullied by others?
- Could you plan a charity event for your school to raise money for homeless people?
- Mr. Stink uses the phrase ‘unimaginable kindness’ a number of times in the story. Can you think of any acts that are ‘unimaginably kind’?
