<p>Two years after the first film, the Brat Pack ran it back in 1990 with <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100994/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100994/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Young Guns II</em></a><em>. </em><a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000389/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000389/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1">Emilio Estevez</a> reprises the role of Billy the Kid—this time in the years following the Lincoln County War—but also plays Brushy Bill Roberts, a man who claimed to be the real Billy the Kid in 1950. <em>Young Guns II</em> didn’t achieve much critical acclaim when it was released, but time has been kind to it, <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/young_guns_2">earning it a bit of a cult following.</a></p>
<p>Easily the funniest appearance of the character of Billy the Kid comes in the 1989 sci-fi comedy <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096928/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure</em></a><em>. </em>The titular characters travel through time to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3g8Unc-oe4" title="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3g8Unc-oe4">gather historical figures</a> for their high school history presentation, including Billy the Kid—played by <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0794890/?ref_=tt_cl_t_5" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0794890/?ref_=tt_cl_t_5">Dan Shor</a>—who helps them on their quest through the past and future.</p>
<p>1973’s <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070518/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070518/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid</em></a> is generally considered one of the best—if not the best—movies about Billy the Kid, but it took a long time to get that recognition. The <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001603/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001603/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0">Sam Peckinpah</a>-directed film starred <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000336/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000336/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0">James Coburn</a> as an aging Pat Garrett, who is hired to finally bring down Billy the Kid, played by <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001434/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_6" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001434/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_6">Kris Kristofferson</a> in one of his earliest lead roles. <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070518/awards/?ref_=tt_awd" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070518/awards/?ref_=tt_awd">Kristofferson earned a BAFTA nomination</a>—as did Bob Dylan for Best Original Score, plus a Grammy nom—and after Peckinpah’s original version was released in 1988, critics called it a classic and <a href="https://www.timeout.com/movies/pat-garrett-billy-the-kid" title="https://www.timeout.com/movies/pat-garrett-billy-the-kid">one of the best of its era</a>.</p>
<p>Billy the Kid was one of the most famous outlaws and gunfighters of the American Old West, and has been the subject of many Hollywood films throughout the years. With the new Epix TV series <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14586544/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14586544/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Billy the Kid</em></a> bringing him back into the spotlight once again, it’s a good time to take a look at his very best big-screen portrayals.</p>
<p>Kristofferson would return to the role of Billy in 2006, voicing the character for <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0853146/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0853146/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Requiem for Billy the Kid</em></a>, a documentary by French filmmaker Anne Feinsilber. The film analyzes the <a href="https://truewestmagazine.com/requiem-for-billy-the-kid/" title="https://truewestmagazine.com/requiem-for-billy-the-kid/">controversies surrounding his death</a>, as well as the myth of Billy the Kid in general and the many films made about him. </p>
<p>1972’s <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068487/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068487/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Dirty Little Billy</em></a> was less a western and more of a gritty, realistic portrayal of Billy the Kid’s early years, when he was more down on his luck. <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0689488/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t1" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0689488/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t1">Michael J. Pollard</a> plays 17-year-old Billy Bonney, before he gains notoriety as Billy the Kid. <em>Dirty Little Billy </em>also features the film debut (albeit uncredited) of <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000560/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t24" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000560/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t24">Nick Nolte</a> as a gang leader. </p>
<p>The most recent appearance of Billy the Kid as a character in a feature film is 2021’s <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12731980/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12731980/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Old Henry</em></a><em>, </em>starring <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0625789/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0625789/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1">Tim Blake Nelson</a> as Henry McCarty—the birth name of Billy the Kid. Nelson plays a widower McCarty who’s living in Oklahoma with his son, when a wounded stranger comes into his life and uncovers his past. <em>Old Henry </em>was named as one of the <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/12/national-board-of-review-names-paul-thomas-anderson-his-licorice-pizza-as-best-director-film-1234883672/" title="https://deadline.com/2021/12/national-board-of-review-names-paul-thomas-anderson-his-licorice-pizza-as-best-director-film-1234883672/">top 10 indie films of the year</a> by the National Board of Review.</p>
<p>The 1999 TNT television film <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158131/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158131/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Purgatory</em></a> is about a gang of outlaws that find a peaceful town where violence, swearing and alcohol is shunned. However, not everything is as it seems—as the residents all appear to be former western gunfighters, including Wild Bill Hickok, Jesse James, Doc Holliday, and Billy the Kid. <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005531/?ref_=tt_cl_t_6" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005531/?ref_=tt_cl_t_6">Donnie Wahlberg</a> plays Billy in this film that more closely resembles a <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1087375-purgatory">surreal episode of <em>The Twilight Zone</em></a> than a traditional western.</p>
<p>The 1970 western <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065547/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065547/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Chisum</em></a> stars <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000078/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000078/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1">John Wayne</a> as the titular cattle baron that joins forces with Billy the Kid—played by <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0222003/?ref_=tt_cl_t_11" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0222003/?ref_=tt_cl_t_11">Geoffrey Deuel</a>—and Pat Garrett to fight the Lincoln County War of 1878. <em>Chisum</em> was one of Wayne’s finer efforts of the 1970s—even then-U.S. President Richard Nixon <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065547/trivia/?ref_=tt_trv_trv" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065547/trivia/?ref_=tt_trv_trv">was a fan</a>.</p>
<p>The 1930 film <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0020693/?ref_=ttco_co_tt"><em>Billy the Kid</em></a> featured <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0113902/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0113902/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1">John Mack Brown</a> in the titular role, hunted down, captured and re-captured by Sheriff Pat Garrett. Directed by early auteur <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0896542/?ref_=tt_ov_dr" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0896542/?ref_=tt_ov_dr">King Vidor</a>, it was filmed in an early version of 70 mm widescreen called Realife, and was <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033389/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033389/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0">remade in 1941</a>.</p>
<p>1938’s <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029915/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029915/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Billy the Kid Returns</em></a> stars actor and singer <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001678/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001678/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1">Roy Rogers</a> as himself, who just so happened to be a dead ringer for Billy the Kid. When Sheriff Pat Garrett shoots Billy, deputy sheriff Rogers takes his place and defends New Mexico’s settlers against evil ranchers. </p>
<p>If you’re interested in historical accuracy, <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097450/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_6" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097450/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_6"><em>Gore Vidal's Billy the Kid</em></a> is the one for you. The 1989 TNT TV film stars Val Kilmer as Billy the Kid in the midst of his participation in the Lincoln County War. Vidal had <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1989/05/10/arts/review-television-vidal-draws-a-bead-on-good-bad-old-billy-the-kid.html" title="https://www.nytimes.com/1989/05/10/arts/review-television-vidal-draws-a-bead-on-good-bad-old-billy-the-kid.html">written the original teleplay</a> for 1958’s <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051849/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051849/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1"><em>The Left Handed Gun</em></a>, but wanted to return to the story for a more accurate film, claiming the studio hadn’t handled the material well enough. </p>
<p>1988’s <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096487/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096487/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>Young Guns</em></a> was the Brat Pack’s take on the story of Billy the Kid, starring <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000389/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000389/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1">Emilio Estevez</a> as Billy and co-starring <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000662/?ref_=tt_cl_t_2" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000662/?ref_=tt_cl_t_2">Kiefer Sutherland</a>, <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001617/?ref_=tt_cl_t_3" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001617/?ref_=tt_cl_t_3">Lou Diamond Phillips</a> and <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000221/?ref_=tt_cl_t_4" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000221/?ref_=tt_cl_t_4">Charlie Sheen</a>. <em>Young Guns</em> was a <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1988-08-23-ca-756-story.html" title="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1988-08-23-ca-756-story.html">box-office hit</a>, and <a href="https://truewestmagazine.com/article/the-absolute-best-historically-accurate-westerns/">earned praise</a> for not only being historically accurate but entertaining, a fresh spin on the western genre.</p>
<p>Directed by <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000352/?ref_=tt_cl_t_15" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000352/?ref_=tt_cl_t_15">Vincent D'Onofrio</a>, 2019’s <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4975920/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4975920/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3"><em>The Kid</em></a> focuses on Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett again, but this time they cross paths with an <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/kid-review-1191895/" title="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/kid-review-1191895/">orphaned brother and sister</a> on the New Mexico frontier. <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2851530/?ref_=tt_cl_t_4" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2851530/?ref_=tt_cl_t_4">Dane DeHaan</a> plays Billy and <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000160/?ref_=tt_cl_t_5" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000160/?ref_=tt_cl_t_5">Ethan Hawke</a> portrays Garrett, who both take turns as potential role models for the kids.</p>
<p>1950’s <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042638/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042638/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>The Kid from Texas</em></a> stars decorated U.S. soldier-turned-actor <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001559/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001559/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1">Audie Murphy</a> as Billy the Kid. This version of Billy becomes a ranch hand of Roger Jameson after he fights off Major Harper and his men, and later goes on a <a href="https://audiemurphy.com/movies04.htm" title="https://audiemurphy.com/movies04.htm">shooting spree</a> when Jameson is killed.</p>
<p>Directed by Howard Hughes, the 1943 western <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036241/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036241/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>The Outlaw</em></a> is nominally about Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett and Doc Holliday, but the real star of the picture is country vixen Rio McDonald. This was <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000066/?ref_=tt_cl_t_3" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000066/?ref_=tt_cl_t_3">Jane Russell</a>’s breakthrough role—the scene-stealing performance helped <a href="https://ew.com/movies/howard-hughes-jane-russell-bra-the-outlaw/" title="https://ew.com/movies/howard-hughes-jane-russell-bra-the-outlaw/">launch her as a Hollywood icon</a>—and the film’s later advertising billed her as the sole star. </p>
<p>1954 saw not one but two motion pictures featuring Billy the Kid, one of which was <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047163/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047163/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3"><em>The Law vs. Billy the Kid</em></a>. In this film starring <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0103722/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0103722/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1">Scott Brady</a>, Billy tries to go straight—mostly because he’s fallen in love—but it doesn’t last, and he ends up <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the-law-vs-billy-the-kid" title="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the-law-vs-billy-the-kid">running afoul of the law again</a>, as the title suggests. </p>
<p><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046804/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046804/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0"><em>The Boy from Oklahoma</em></a> is mostly about lawyer-turned-sheriff Tom Brewster (<a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0736688/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0736688/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1">Will Rogers Jr.</a>) and corrupt mayor Barney Turlock <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0142273/?ref_=tt_cl_t_4" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0142273/?ref_=tt_cl_t_4">(Anthony Caruso)</a>, but ol’ Billy makes an appearance as the mayor’s cousin. Played by <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0532057/?ref_=tt_cl_t_11" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0532057/?ref_=tt_cl_t_11">Tyler MacDuff</a>, Billy <a href="https://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/69510/the-boy-from-oklahoma/#synopsis" title="https://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/69510/the-boy-from-oklahoma/#synopsis">picks a fight with Sheriff Tom</a>, who then tries to arrest the mayor for serving alcohol to the underage Kid.</p>
<p>Yup, Billy the Kid once squared off against a vampire on the silver screen. 1966’s <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060168/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060168/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3"><em>Billy the Kid Versus Dracula</em></a> starred <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001017/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1">John Carradine</a> as Dracula, who travels to America to make a ranch owner his next victim, but her fiancé Billy the Kid—played by <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0183900/?ref_=tt_cl_t_2" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0183900/?ref_=tt_cl_t_2">Chuck Courtney</a>—has something to say about that. So is it any good? Well, Carradine called it <a href="https://www.highdefdigest.com/blog/one-mans-trash-billy-kid-vs-dracula/" title="https://www.highdefdigest.com/blog/one-mans-trash-billy-kid-vs-dracula/">the one movie he regrets making</a>, so it’s probably best to lower your expectations and just have fun.</p>
<p>Believe it or not, they’ve been making Billy the Kid movies for more than 110 years. The very first one was made <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0143139/?ref_=tt_mv_close" title="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0143139/?ref_=tt_mv_close">way back in 1911</a>. The silent western stars <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0832458/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0" title="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0832458/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0">Edith Storey</a>—<a href="https://truewestmagazine.com/when-billy-the-kid-was-billie-the-kid/" title="https://truewestmagazine.com/when-billy-the-kid-was-billie-the-kid/">America’s first “cowgirl” film star</a>—as Billy. The one-reel short is presumed to be lost, so consider yourself lucky if you’re ever able to watch it.</p>
