      Critics Consensus

Hostiles benefits from stunning visuals and a solid central performance from Christian Bale, both of which help elevate its uneven story.

Mortal I was expecting something better. The action is slow and the build up as well. Slow burning movie and the acting is minimal. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Dobromir Z Incredible acting and cinematography. Each shot is a masterclass in composition. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review Mitch C Be advised, what could be a very good movie is at least 20 minutes too long. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review justo g i have seen some wild west movies but no movie gave me this much thirst for watching more movies which are based on life of red americans, life of yankees in 18th and 19th century, and generally the life during wild west era. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review Mark J When i read some of these bad reviews, i realize that most of these critics are overly verbose idiots. It has been a long time since I have come across a film that has made me put my phone down for 2 hours straight and has really drawn me in. This was such a realistic time warp back to the days of cowboys and Indians. It was beautifully shot and written. Christen Bale, as usual, does not let you down with his stellar performance as well as the rest of the cast. Literally the best film I've seen this year! Robert Daniels 812filmreviews The wants are grandiose, but the gains are minuscule. Rated: 2/4 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba Christian Bale gives a typically half-measured, half-intense performance of a character who is mostly pretty awful but whom Hostiles wants to redeem for no clear reason whatsoever. May 21, 2018 Full Review Tal Rosenberg Chicago Reader The journey is beautifully shot by cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi, but Bale's genius is wasted-he's often resigned to looking sullen and straining to recite the clunky dialogue. Mar 3, 2018 Full Review Dan Schindel Vague Visages For all its attempts at dissecting human cruelty, there’s no human core to this story, which makes its 135-minute runtime feel twice as long. Dec 6, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Hostiles” is unquestionably solemn and dour yet fittingly so considering the subjects it wants to explore. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Cooper's film both embraces and questions the mythology of the West. He underscores the violent past of the United States and yearns for atonement, but then he also relies on many of the same generalizations he tries to dispel.
