I didn´t know anything about the movie when I started watching it, which was a good experience. I didn´t even know the correct genre. That´s why I don´t write it here. Only so much that it´s probably a low budget indie production. In my opinion it created a great atmosphere with little material.
Bookish young man Jack (played by Tom Miller, who really doesn't have the screen presence to carry a whole film) is holed up in his parents' house in rural France, a safe refuge from the apocalyptic virus epidemic that's decimated the population. A Ukrainian woman, Kara, breaks in, followed soon by a pair of French intruders, and although the enemy is theoretically that virus (the symptoms of which seem to be limited to some unspectacular coughing up of blood, so sorry if you were hoping for some Cabin Fever-style splatter), the real problem is paranoia, as no one is able to trust anyone. In other words, this is a very low-budget version of the recent It Comes at Night, but…
A deadly flu wipes out Europe. A guy goes to his parents home in search for them and just relax there. Then a woman storms the house with a gun and two guys after her, speaking French, violently demanding shit. Well, it's not a total waste of time, it's well made and acted I guess. It had potential but it just kept repeating itself and boring me half the time.
To me, this doesn't deserve the low ratings it seems to be getting.
It was mainly very slow and had some pacing issues. With pacing, there are ways to make it feel like time is passing while still making it interesting to watch, and this was slightly off the mark in that aspect. There was also something about the ending in juxtaposition to the slow pace throughout the rest of the film that made it suddenly feel rushed and then suddenly cut off. It was still perfectly fine, though.
Despite its slow and thoughtful approach to pacing, Mountain Fever flies by in the blink of an eye. It’s a stripped back, claustrophobic, and thoughtful debut. Hendrik Faller is a name that you will not be familiar with, but after his feature debut, Mountain Fever, he’s certainly a name to keep an eye on.
I would love to see what Hendrik Fuller could do with a decent budget. This film is certainly evidence of good ideas and a knowledge of how to build a creepy atmosphere. Making the alps look scarce and fierce as they could be sets an uneasy tone for the movie, unfortunately though not through the fault of the director or the two fine main cast members the film can't build on early promise. I put this more down to restrictions on what was possible than anything. Certainly not a bad film but not a good film either, it sits firmly in middle ground and sadly may become forgotten quickly although all those involved should be kept high on the 'keep watch' list.
