Moon was established after Rush & their SRO management company were unable to find a record label interested in signing them. The imprint served as an outlet for the band's first single and self-entitled debut album. After the band signed a two record deal with The Polygram Group's Mercury Records in 1974, Moon was transformed from an independent label to a production company.
With Moon acting as a production company for Rush, Ray Danniels also launched Taurus Records in 1973 to serve under the SRO umbrella as a label for Max Webster & Liverpool. By May of 1977, Taurus was transformed into a production company for the bands they had under contract and a third label, Anthem Records, was founded to record & publish the Canadian bands in the SRO stable.
