I had never heard of Jefferson's Poplar Forest until recently. I'm glad we made the effort to stop. Our tour guide was top rate. She offered explanations of everything we saw and interesting inside stories of the various people who lived on this property.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and encouraged questions. The mansion was interesting, and the grounds were beautiful. We learned a lot about Jefferson and his house.

We have visited Poplar Forest a few times and each time we learn something new and interesting. Anyone visiting the Lynchburg area should make this a must-do place to visit.

The site and signage included very little information about Thomas Jefferson. You learn a lot about slaves, other families who owned the property, and architecture, but very little about Thomas Jefferson.

Thankfully, my experience at the site was saved by a great tour guide: Dave Dietrich. Dave was entertaining, informative, and a great guide. Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest is a much better site for having him.

The main house is small, and because restoration in progress it's mostly un-furnished. But the small dedicated team of historian carpenter will passionately narrate the story of the house, their infectious enthusiasm of the doors, architrave, cornice, mortise and tenon joints make me wish I'm a carpenter.
