Libraries
The Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) has been the home of Alabama history for more than a century. It is the nation's oldest state-funded, independent archival and historical agency. Located in downtown Montgomery across the street from the capitol, the ADAH is the official government records repository for the state, a private collections library and research facility, and also home to the Museum of Alabama, the state's history museum. The Museum of Alabama is the only destination where you can explore Alabama's past from prehistory to the present. Permanent exhibitions at the Museum of Alabama include The Land of Alabama, introducing the geology and natural resources that helped shape the state's history, and The First Alabamians, featuring artifacts, murals, and a diorama that tell the inspiring story of fourteen thousand years of Native American culture. An entirely new centerpiece exhibition called Alabama Voices opened in February 2014. This exhibition covers the dramatic unfolding of Alabama history from the dawn of the 1700s to the beginning of the 21st century. More than 800 artifacts, hundreds of images and documents, and twenty-two audiovisual programs tell the story of struggles over the land, the rise of a cotton economy, the Civil War, industrialization, world wars, civil rights, the race to the moon, and more. Voices taken from diaries, letters, speeches, songs, and other sources convey the experiences of Alabamians who lived through and shaped the history of these periods. The Museum of Alabama provides interactive educational resources for children and families in the Hands-On-Gallery and Grandma's Attic. Here, families and children can dress in period costumes, play with toys from bygone eras, make their own crafts, listen to stories, and much more. The Museum of Alabama is open Monday-Saturday, 8:30-4:30 and admission is always FREE! Visit our Research Room, open Tuesday-Friday and the second Saturday of each month from 8:30-4:30, to learn more about your family's contribution to Alabama's history. Get expert guidance from our staff, work with original records and online resources, and start building your family tree. Come find your story!

This is the most extraordinary place I've ever visited. I have nothing to add beyond encouraging anyone reading this to go and be sure to leave time (as in pretty much the whole day) to visit the Legacy Museum, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the brand new Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. I've never been proud to be an EJI supporter.

We first went to Legacy Museum and then came here. It's a good experience for the whole family, kids and us alike. We are immigrants but our kids are born here. So I didn't learn a lot about how the slaves came over and all. My kids were the ones teaching us as we went around, and how slaves were just lynched for just any reason!

My girls’ school was closed on Friday because of festival. That was our big chance to stop at Rosa Parks Museum on Friday because it is closed every Saturday & Sunday. We got up at 5 am and left home at 6 am. We are from Louisiana that we traveled to Montgomery to visit it at 3 pm before it would be closed by 5 pm. We did made it. Whew! Yes it is interesting to learn about history of brave Rosa Parks. Wow!

This active church is an amazing time capsule with the volunteers leading the tours being long serving church members. If you’re visiting, please show some respect and don’t ask for photos when they kindly ask you several times to not photograph in the church. You’re not entitled to taking photos and you put the elderly ladies in an uncomfortable spot when you ask.

We came in as a lot of other people did, we maybe should have waited. The house is small but has a lot of info but I feel with the amount of people I didn't have time to read I had to move as fast as possible so others could see. I feel like the house probably had spurts were lots of people come in then points where it's not as busy. The house is nice just wish I had more time to not feel rushed. We did come during the weekday so not sure of weekends are less busy. I would think not but there is lot of paid parking around the area another thing we were seeing graceful let us use their parking so we didn't have to move or pay.

Absolutely fantastic museum. Especially for how compact it is - 45 minutes will get you through the totality of it, but still of the highest quality. The museum is mostly videos - one of which highlights the work of the Southern Poverty Law Center. But for $5, it’s an amazing bargain. A must go in Montgomery.

The Alabama State Capitol is both a place where Alabama's leaders make decisions and a museum.
It's a gorgeous building with a past that changed the South and America.
The Confederacy was founded here in 1861, and history did not end there.
If walls could talk, there would be plenty to say.
You can visit many of the rooms and walk of halls of southern legends.
It all comes alive in stunning 1800s decor and you will feel like you are back in time.
Some offices look like they were back then.
You will not be alone as you walk as portraits of every past Alabama governor eye your every move.
It's an experience you will tell others about.
    I do.

We did the voices of Alabama on the second floor they have a gallery on the 3rd floor also, but we didn't venture up there they had a hands-on kids center but it was closed for an event when we were there. Thet also have a room talking about the ecosystems across Alabama & one talking about the wars. Idk how much those would entertain kids, but I know the voices of Alabama has way too much reading for small kids. We enjoyed it & had it to ourselves that day which was fine with us. We took our times watching the videos reading the info just taking it all in. They have a couple free spots in a lot across the street from the back side, but they go fast. Have bathrooms and a gift shop but it wasn't open when we were there.

The have lots of free parking across the street. I have a feeling it would get quite crowded on certain days, like say a weekend. We went on a weekday and still saw a lot of people. But we managed to see everything without too many people in our way and were leaving just as it started to get hot. We did take water with us which was a good thing and an umbrella tucked away just in case it rained but it didn't. They have bathrooms in a couple different spots and a wild array of animals. The gift shop was ok we each brought a couple of things.

A nice, quiet cemetery with narrow roads that are hilly, so be careful.
The most visited gravesite of course, is that of Audrey and Hank Williams.
Hank is known as the King of Country Music.
Spending time with them will give you a deeper appreciation of their impact on music and culture.
It's a must-see for fans of Hank and Country.
    But be respectful.
Others are here as their families chose this place for an eternal rest.
    Thank you.
