Why does Monokuma’s voice sound a little weird in DRV3?

Discussion

I was so confused, I thought they changed the voice actors, or it was intentional for the plot, but the voice would reach a range that was similar to previous games’ Monokuma voice. But it would often sound completely different.

Monokuma sounded so different in DRV3...

Until near the very end, it’s straight up how Monokuma is supposed to sound.

Was there a reasoning behind this or did the VA just remembered how to do the Monokuma voice near the end of the game?

The voice actor simply had to get back into gear voicing Monokuma. Bear in mind that he voiced Monokuma in Danganronpa 1 and 2 relatively close to one another due to the fact that they were both released a bit before they were localized, so he might've had trouble getting back into him almost three years later.

You know that makes a lot more sense than what I originally thought, which was that it was a choice by the voice actor to do it somewhat differently to reflect the VA change in Japanese. But your idea is more likely lol

I'm going to assume you mean the Japanese voices.

The voice actress for Monokuma was indeed changed. Oyama Nobuya played him in DR1, 2 and AE. It became TARAKO for v3 and DR3. The reason for the change is because Oyama retired after DR:AE.

I was referring to the English voice, but that’s interesting nonetheless. I didn’t pick up on the difference in Monokuma’s voice when I watched a V3 trial in Japanese.

They sounded super different to me, though I think each played a unique and different kind of Monokuma and both were good. I recognized TARAKO's voice because she plays a Zero Sansei in the Zero Escape series. TARAKO has different voice skills than Oyama and the writers tried to take advantage of them, it makes the v3 Monokuma come off slightly different in Japanese. (TARAKO can say tongue twisters ridiculously fast and in an extremely creepy way.)
