Travis McKinley's life has drifted sideways. His job, his marriage, even his children all feel disconnected and distant. Has he really accomplished nothing of consequence in his life? One Christmas Day, Travis plays a round of golf and finds himself for the first time in the zone--playing like a pro. In astonishingly short order, Travis is catapulted into the PGA Senior Open at Pebble Beach, where he advances to the final round. And while his wife, his children, and a live television audience watch, a miracle takes place that changes Travis, and his family, forever.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

While it isn't quite the literary equivalent of a hole-in-one, this fast-moving golf fantasy about an amateur golfer who decides to try out for the PGA Senior Tour has enough sweetness and humor to overcome its obvious plot cliches. Middle-aged and happily married, Travis McKinley does the unthinkable: he misses Christmas dinner after getting caught up in a divinely inspired streak of great putting during an outing on the country club course in Winnetka, Ill. As Travis's obsession with his newfound talent takes over his life, his obstetrician wife, Sarah, expresses increasing dismay over his inability to grow up, a domestic crisis that reaches a boiling point when Travis loses his job and journeys to Tallahassee, Fla., to try to qualify for the Senior Tour. Competing against overwhelming odds, Travis earns a place on the tour, only to have his dream spoiled when he learns that Sarah intends to file for divorce. As he continues to compete against the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino, the victory that will fulfill Travis's dream and reunite him with his family is as improbable as it is inevitable. Plot issues aside, Patterson (whose newest thriller is Jack and Jill) and de Jonge succeed admirably in creating a winning character who is enough of a child to believe his dreams and is also mature enough to offer some gently humorous reflections on our national obsession with an engaging sport. Christmas shoppers take note: vigorous, straightforward prose and solid characterization put this second golf fable of the season in a far different league from the mystical, romantic The Legend of Tommy Morris (Forecasts, Sept. 2)

From Library Journal

Think of this short novel by best-selling thriller writer Patterson (Hide and Seek, LJ 12/95) and journalist de Jonge as a cross between It's a Wonderful Life and a masculine version of Sleeping Beauty. On Christmas Day, Travis McKinley is playing golf when suddenly he acquires perfect vision for the putt. In a zone, he plays brilliant golf and misses Christmas dinner with his family, where things are already rocky. The wife he adores wants to leave him, and he doesn't know why, although it may be because working 30 years in an advertising job he hates has strangled his growth and enthusiasm. When he's fired, he is liberated to see whether he really can play professional golf. Travis qualifies for the Professional Golfers Association Senior Tour, and it changes him and his family forever. Buy this for all the middle-aged male golfers who still have the spark of a dream left in them, as well as for those who've given up.?Marylaine Block, St. Ambrose Univ. Lib., Davenport, Iowa

Finished #miracleonthe17thgreen today and though I am not a fan of #golf and know nothing more than I can recall from Highschool gym (so nothing at all) about golf this book was still a great read and my lack of knowledge was no hinderance to the pleasure of this story!! It was a great read and I took a chance getting it ...now I’m not sure if the universe is sending me messages lol ... a story about a mans journey to #selflove and happiness ...taking chances, chasing the dream and letting go of things that do not bring you joy. We have so many responsibilities and especially in California so much of what you do or don’t do is based on pay and the ability to provide and live in this crazy expensive place often taking on tasks and jobs that do not bring you joy and are actually soul sucking but we stay due to fear and our responsibilities ..... just makes ya think!! I also loved the afterword or how the story came to be ...I do not normally read the afterword but for some reason I did and I loved Peter De Jonge’s story and passion for writing this with @jamespattersonbooks #redemption #nofear #loveyourself #thetimeis

It's about time I was led to reading this lovely little fantasy! As a tournament volunteer intimately familiar with the Pebble Beach Golf Links I can tell you that some poetic license has been invoked regarding the competition. Nevertheless it was a joy to read and brought back fond memories of my days as a Walking Scorer. Perhaps one I'll walk with Mr. Patterson and Mr. Dr Jonge.

Nice read about achieving golfing greatness. Didn't give it 5 stars because I liked books by this author but, I'm not really into golf.

James Patterson with Peter de Jonge as the primary writer has put together a wonderful heartwarming story of an ordinary guy stuck in a midlife crisis. Travis McKinley hates his job as a copywriter for an advertizing agency that he has been with for 20 years. It ceased challenging him years ago. He and his wife, Sarah, a well established and successful physician have become emotionally estranged. He senses she is moving toward a divorce. His three children seem to be growing up without him. He eventually gets fired. Sensing this as an omen, Travis McKinley takes the giant step to engage in an adventure he has always yearned for. Most of his friends think he’s nuts and become an irresponsible family man.
You don’t need to be a golfer or understand the difference between a bogie and an eagle to appreciate this heartwarming story about an ordinary family guy who chose the road less traveled and won. You’ll find yourself pulling for the guy all through the story and you might even feel a tear on your cheek.
Everyone will love the read. I rate the story a 5 and strongly recommend it whether or not you're a golfer.

Loved it! And, I'm not even a golfer. Well written. Love the "asides". Loved the way it "steered" you to a wrong conclusion. Good reading...easy reading. Want my husband and two sons, who are a golfers, to read it. They just played Pebble Beach in January and I know they will relate to some of the holes.

Travis Mckinley is just your average guy...; he hates his job in advertising, his marriage is on the rocks, and he loves golf. When he is unceremoniously fired from his job, a fabulous round of golf played at his local course is the catalyst that drives him to living his dream of playing in the Senior P.G.A. tour. So he flys off to Q school to begin living his dream, leaving behind unemployment and a disintegrating relationship with his physician wife Sarah.

Travis arrives--but so do many other avid golfers who aspire to be the next Jack Nicholas and have the $3,000 enrollment fee. But the gods are smiling on the Mckinelys; could it be that Travis could actually out-stroke some of the greatest golfers ever to play the game? Could he win the tour, all that money, and perhaps receive the greatest gift of all--the restoration of his family??

Read the book to find out, although it doesn't take an Einstein to conclude the obvious based upon the title of the book. Although I found this a somewhat interesting tale, I believe that to truly appreciate the story one must truly appreciate the game of golf--as do obviously the authors, although unfortunately I do not. Many readers may find themselves struggling with the terminology used within the game. All in all, a serviceable story with an even better lesson. Don't be afraid to take chances, in this one life that we all have to live. Take a gamble on life, and on love.

The secret to life? Golf has it all. A stick a ball the elements and only yourself blame if things go wrong. When you come to terms with these facts then golf and life is much more enjoyable. Just like the previous 2 “Miracle” book this one has it all. As a former Top Golfer who has played in a few Opens I just loved this book.

Although I don't like Patterson, for some obvious reasons, which I don't like to mention here. But if you ignore that, he got some brilliant books in his dungeon for us.
And This Miracle series of his, is so beautiful and heartwarming to read, that it left you feel with a hope and new prospective at things.
Definitely recommend.
Simply, fast-paced and tightly plotted.
And yes, get some basic knowledge of Golf before getting into it. Like, what's the accessories called, and the name of shots and stuff like that.
Good reading.

If you're now wondering what life has in store for you and you love golf, pick up this book. James Patterson again hits the nail on the head about life and what really counts over the long term; sure golf is all encompassing at times but family and your loved ones; that's what really matters and this book helps to put it all in the right perspective.
