Tabs-Vehicle Registration - General - Renew Online InformationVehicle registration expires each year (refer to your vehicle’s current tabs for the month) and must be renewed. You may renew your vehicle registration online .
Please Note : Online tab renewal is only available for standard passenger class vehicles (cars, pick-ups under 1 ton and SUVs). All other vehicle classes need to be renewed in person at a deputy registrar office or through the mail.
Policies and ProceduresRegistration Exemption for Active Duty Military Personnel
All motor vehicles, as defined in
Minnesota Statutes, section 168.002 , registered in Minnesota to any person in active military service, located/based outside Minnesota, is exempt from registration tax while in active service and for 90 days after completion of active service. All other associated fees still apply (replacement plate fee, contributions, tech surcharge, filing fee).
Active Duty Military Personnel must follow the steps listed below in order to claim vehicle registration exemption:
Active Duty personnel must be vehicle owner or co-owner
Vehicle must be located or based out-of-state or overseas
Cannot be operated on a public highway within the state unless on furlough or leave
Provide a copy of military orders or letterhead from base commander, identifying dates of active duty
Note that registration exemption for active duty military personnel cannot be completed online.
