Milton Delugg Obituary

December 2, 1918 - April 6, 2015 In 1950, after years of working in radio, Milton Delugg became music director on television's Broadway Open House, often considered the forerunner of The Tonight Show. He worked with many other fine composers, including Frank Loesser. One of his best known compositions is "Orange Colored Sky," remembered as a hit for Nat King Cole. His Hoop-Dee-Doo polka was a smash hit for Perry Como. In 1958 he produced the Buddy Holly hit Rave On! He was music director of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show in 1965-66. Delugg also enjoyed a long association with Chuck Barris, producer of many popular game shows. Delugg remained active as the Music Director of the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade through 2013. He passed away at home April 6, 2015 at the age of 96. No services at this time. Donations to St. Jude's Hospital. He is survived by two loving sons Michael (Vivien) and Stephen.

All of Milton's wonderful accomplishments notwithstanding, my favorite memory of Milton remains of him chewing on a pretzel stick in the mobile unit parked in Herald Square on Thanksgiving. A near-worthy replacement for his favorite cigars in the confines of a truck. In an industry teeming with talent, few rise high enough to shine as brightly above the rest as Milton did. He can never be replaced. He will never be forgotten. His star will forever shine down from the heavens illuminating the way for others polishing their G & C clefs. I will always miss him.

My sympathy to Michael and Stephen. I remember your dad and how encouraging he was when Stephen and I were playing the trombone and accordion together in Scarsdale when we were in high school. Seems so long ago in one way and only yesterday in another.

Although I never met Mr. Delugg, was a big fan. My dad's video collection has a short film of a 16 year old Milton Delugg performing with Gene Austin. He was so talented from an early age. RIP

I had the great good fortune to call Milton a dear friend. I am privileged to have been able to know him for the past 16 years and work with him on the Parade for 9 of those years. He was a truly kind and generous man to me and my family and inspired my son to pursue a career in music and sound engineering. I will forever remember lunches at the Friars and visiting him in LA, where he was always a warm and welcoming host. Thank you Milton for your stories, your laughter, and being part of my life..you will be missed.

Steven, Viv and Michael,

My dear uncle Milton will always be lovingly remembered. Your childhood home was my home away from home, and my daughter Elizabeth carries proudly your dear sister's name Amy. I will always treasure the hot cocoa at the grand stand during the Parade. It is perhaps fitting that Dad and Milton passed so close in time to one another. I have know doubt that they will be betting together on sporting events in heaven. With much love, Susie

My condolences to son Steven--who I knew a million years ago as a reluctant trombonist at Interlochen. This is a tough day-- but it does get better in time.

Milton was a true light in my life. I worked with him for a very short period of time but was lucky to keep in touch for a long while after. He was always so caring and so concerned for my happiness and success, and he made taking care of his team a priority. He taught me so much about the industry, especially how to bring some humor and humanity to all I do. I'm so lucky to have learned from him. His memory will color my work and stay with me.

My mind is filled with so many wonderful memories of Milton going all the way back to when I first met him in 1960 when I was a teenager and my Dad moved next door to Milton and Annie in Scarsdale and they became dearest friends. I'll miss his regular phone calls of the last few years with the latest joke that he heard and my wife and I will miss dinner in the chopped salad restaurant whenever we were in LA. My best to Michael, Viv and Stephen. I'm sure Milt and my Dad are already seated at the big round table in the sky with the cards shuffled and dealt out for the next hand !!!

When asked about his success, Milton always said that he was "Just Lucky". We all know that he also worked very hard at his craft and career and had a unique talent and style that transcended all decades of music. He maintained a youthful spirit throughout his entire life and never rested on his laurels. Milton always stayed on that cutting edge of creativity and also navigated through his business arrangements with the same grace and ease as his musical arrangements. Even though he will be dearly missed, thoughts of Milton will always keep us smiling.

Milton was one of the nicest demigods of music and media I have ever met. Some 45 years in this industry qualifies me to say that. He never failed to light up any room he walked into. My only regret is not being able to work with him more than the few times I did. Earth has lost another diamond, but there is a brand new star in the heavens.

Throughout my life, your music was part of the soundtrack of my life. I loved your music before I even realized that it was you! That unique, magical sound. Of course- the Macy's Parade! It was a gift to be a friend of yours and to get to know you. To your family- Milton's amazing legacy will live on through you. With much love and respect.

Milton DeLugg has been part of my TV consciousness since the 1950s when I was old enough to watch game shows. I used to confuse the name "DeLugg" with "a DeLuxe dishwasher." "Wow," I thought. "He not only leads the band, he makes the prizes." As a fellow accordionist, I regret never having had the honor of meeting this trailblazing, talented, kind man.

Michael, Vivien and Stephen,
Please accept my deepest and most heartfelt sympathies. So many years since the Riverdale and Scarsdale days, but it is only with the fondest of memories that I remember the warmth and kindness of your wonderful parents. In recent years I looked forward to seeing your dad's name in the credits for the Macy's parade and marveled at his continued drive, energy and creativity.

Milton, I was truly blessed to have known you, my friend. It was a joy producing Macy's Parade with you for 25 years and I am honored that you wrote a song just for me ("JEAN, JEAN, THE MARCHING MACHINE"). I know you will have a great band ready when we all meet again for our big parade in the sky. You have always been a loving "Angel" so it's nice to know you now have your wings...ahhh, was that Milton's bell we just heard tingle? Love, Jean

I was very privileged to have known Milton and welcomed by him into a small part of his life. Fond memories ....The Friars Club and Trader Vice. Two of his favorites. What a kind generous and funny guy. His stories from the good old days and who he worked with were priceless to me. I will miss the wonderful space he occupied in my life.

Dear Family, Milt was my very dear friend, mentor and associate since 1975. We worked on 33 Macy*s Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcasts and many Orange Bowl Parades as well. He remembered every musical encounter of his life...and all of the punch lines from all of the world's jokes! He always ended our phone calls with "Take care of yourself." He was one of a kind and I will miss him always. Love, Joelie.

My deepest sympathies to Michael(Vivien) and Stephen for the loss of your dad. It was an honor to work with him for many years and to be his friend. His passion for music was contagious as was his zest for life. I'm sure that wherever Milton is, he is making beautiful music! I will never forget him or what he taught me. God Bless!
