CSS610 - trouble with hot insert SFP+

Post by Miko651 »

Hi, I decided to make a 10Gb connection between my computer and the server in my home network. I added a 10Gb RJ45 network card to my computer, a 10Gb SFP+ card to the server, a MikroTik XS+DA0001 DAC cable and an insert Mikrotik S+RJ10 SFP+ for the CSS610-8P-2S+ switch. During performance testing, the insert reached approximately 80 degrees Celsius and began to "shut down". The SFP+ link between the switch on the computer stopped working - I had to turn off and on the network card in the computer - after that the link works fine. Sometimes it even happened that the network card in my PC was set to 5Gb instead of 10. On the switch, the interface speed was set to 10Gb, without auto-negotiation.
I read post on the mikrotik wiki that the insert should work up to 70 degrees Celsius during normal operation - and this is the case as long as it does not use the full capabilities of the interface.

Does anyone have an idea how to solve the problem with the S+RJ10 insert overheating? I'm thinking about adding a Noctua 40x40 fan, but there is no connector on the board to connect the power to that fan. I saw that some people in other switch models connect fans via 3 PIN -> 2 PIN -> USB connectors.

10G RJ45 SFP's are made for datacenters with a lot of forced air cooling - Not recomended for home usage.

Mikrotik should make this clear on the product page.

If this is still the case, then add a 12V fan simply on top of it.
