Marion Michael "Mike" Rounds (24 October 1954-) was the Governor of South Dakota (R) from 7 January 2003 to 8 January 2011 (succeeding Bill Janklow and preceding Dennis Daugaard) and US Senator from South Dakota from 3 January 2015, succeeding Tim Johnson.

Biography[]

Mike Rounds was born in Huron, South Dakota on 24 October 1954, and his family moved to Pierre when he was just three years old. He graduated from South Dakota State University before working for an insurance and real estate firm, and he served in the State Senate from 1991 to 2001. In 2002, he was elected Governor of South Dakota, and he established 10 research centers at state-supported universities, banned all medical abortions except for those necessary to save the mother's life (later repealed), and offered green cards to foreign investors. In 2014, he was elected to the US Senate, and he supported withdrawing from the Paris Agreement.
