You’ll need a Microsoft account to create an Xbox account. A Microsoft account is not the same thing as an Xbox account, although you can use the same email address for both.

If you already have a Microsoft account that you use to sign in to other Microsoft services (such as Windows, Outlook, OneDrive, Office, MSN, and Skype), use that account to create your Xbox account as well. Using the same email address to sign in to Xbox allows you to manage your settings and billing information through a single account.

If you don’t have a Microsoft account

You can use your usual email address to create a Microsoft account, even if it’s a non-Microsoft email (such as Yahoo, Gmail, etc.). If you use a non-Microsoft email address, you’ll be prompted to provide some additional info when you sign in for the first time. You’ll need to:

Create a password
Note This password will be tied to your Microsoft account and used to sign in to Microsoft services only. It doesn’t need to be the same password you use to sign in to your email account. Note also that updating your email password won’t change your Microsoft account password.
Enter your first and last name
Provide your country and date of birth
Verify ownership of the account by entering a code that we’ll send to the email address you provide

Once you’ve done the above, you’ll be the owner of a new Microsoft account and can sign in to Xbox.

Option 1: Use an existing email address for signing in to Xbox

Step 1: Create your Xbox account

On the console

From the Home screen:
- If you’re not signed in, select Add new.
- If you’re signed in, press the Xbox button to open the guide, select Profile & system > Add or switch > Add new.
Enter the email address of your Microsoft account and follow the on-screen instructions. If it hasn’t already been done, you’ll be asked to select a gamertag for the account.

You’re all set. Go play Xbox!

On a PC or mobile device

In a web browser, go to:
www.xbox.com
Sign in with your email address.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup of your Xbox account, and then return to your Xbox console to sign in.

You’re all set. Go play Xbox!

Option 2: Create a new email address to use for signing in to Xbox

You can use any email service

When creating a Microsoft account using a brand-new email address, you can use:

An email address with a Microsoft domain, such as @outlook.com or @hotmail.com
Any valid email address that you use and monitor regularly, such as @gmail.com, @icloud.com, or @yahoo.com

You can opt to create a new @outlook.com or @hotmail.com email address while creating an account on your Xbox.

Note If you use a non-Microsoft email address to create your account, we’ll send a validation email to that address to verify that you have access.

Step 1: Create a new email for sign-in

On the console:

Press the Xbox button to open the guide and select Profile & system > Add or switch > Add new.
Select Get a new email on the Sign in screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

On a PC or mobile device:

Go to xbox.com and select Sign in.
Select Create one!
Select Get a new email address.

Once you’ve done the above, you’ll be the owner of a new Microsoft account and can sign in to Xbox.
