Tulsa Public Schools announces new assistant athletics director

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) announced Friday that they have selected Marlon Houston as the district’s new assistant athletics director. Houston previously served as East Central Junior High School’s athletic director and dean of students.

Houston will help supervise TPS’ wellness program, 19 middle and high schools’ athletics programs and 81 schools’ physical education (PE) programs and teachers. He will also work with Safety Patrol sponsors, Bike Club, JROTC and Tulsa Rowing Club. Additionally, he will also manage operations for TPS’ volleyball, cheerleading, swimming, tennis and pom programs.

“I am overwhelmed with excitement to have an opportunity to work in our district’s athletics department and continue serving the lives of so many wonderful students of all ages,” said Houston.

He continued, “It is a dream come true to begin this new role and support the infrastructure of athletics programs across the district. Serving our students and educators in this capacity has been a goal of mine since choosing a college major in physical education 30 years ago and I am excited to get to work.”

Houston has more than 20 years of experience in teaching, coaching, and athletic administration. As an educator, Houston has taught physical education and health, social studies, drivers education, College Summit, English Language development, and several leadership and life skills electives.

He has coached football, wrestling, track and cross country, and baseball and has served as head wrestling coach, head football coach and head track coach throughout his career.

Houston holds a bachelor’s degree in health-physical education and safety and a master’s degree in administration and educational leadership.

“We are excited that Marlon will be joining our team as the new assistant athletic director,” said Mick Wilson, executive director of secondary schools student activities and athletics.

Wilson continued, “Marlon has a great heart for students and is well-respected throughout the district. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience as he has been in education for nearly 25 years. Marlon is a great addition to our district team and we are thrilled to welcome him onboard.”
