Nice mid sized collection of Art , sculpture, furniture. Took us about 45 minutes to tour the interior then another 20 minutes to see the outdoor sculpture garden courtyard. Fairly compact art museum, but a nice selection of paintings including impressionism and modern abstracts. Right across the street from Mercer Museum of Americana. You can do both museums in one compact day easily without reparking your car.

We've not heard of this museum until we read in the NY Times that there is a Keith Haring exhibition running at this museum until July. So, we decided to take a drive to Doylestown and check this museum out. The museum is nicely laid out and their collection was impressive for a small town museum. Definitely had a mix of impressionist and modern paintings. Best of all was the Keith Haring exhibition! This was by far the most extensive collection of Haring's work on display that we've ever seen. Definitely go and check it out before it moves to Europe!

Five out of five.
Thoroughly enjoyed the quality and size of this art museum’s exhibits where I could linger and not exhaust myself traipsing through many large halls or a larger art museum. The outdoor sculpture garden, the outstanding gift shops, and of course, the temporary exhibits, were all memorable and inspiring. The Japanese wood block exhibit was very thorough in its representation and explanations of the process. Even the sales lady taking admission and ringing up purchases was unusually kind and welcoming. Highly recommend going.

Thank you to the Micheners for providing this museum. The art thoughtfully displayed and the museum is easy to maneuver. My husband and I visited this fall and took numerous photos of our favorites. We particularly found the display on the founders interesting. The building and grounds are lovely, spacious and clean. Free parking is available in a lot and on the street. The admission charge is average. Those who are truly interested will want to allow 90 minutes or more to see everything.

At $18 a ticket, this museum is way too expensive for what it is. Michener's bio is very interesting, as are just some of the exhibits. We were underwhelmed with the 'Rodin' exhibit and the sculpture garden. However, there is currently a Karen Breakey exhibit called 'Small Deaths' that was actually very good (but not worth $18 a ticket...)

Unfortunately the word is LETDOWN, which is how I felt after making a special trip to Doylestown to see the much-touted Grace Kelly exhibit, which consisted of little more than many of her (admittedly elegant) dresses, some film clips & a few letters & invitations.

Beside Grace's wedding dress, housed at the nearby Philadelphia Museum & incredibly NOT included in the exhibit, what was missing was any historical context whatsoever regarding the times (post-war '50s) or why the wedding was so culturally significant. In those seeming idyllic times, for example, it was every little girl's dream - instead of becoming a lawyer or doctor - to grow up to marry a handsome prince just as Grace Kelly did! And completely overlooked was the rise to social prominence of U. S. Irish Catholics, such as the Kelly's & Kennedy's.

What salvaged the excursion for me is the gallery of lovely paintings by the Pennsylvania Impressionists & my date enjoyed the small room of Michener memorabilia.

I've been to the Michener Art Museum a number of times over the years and a visit there is always a worthwhile experience. In addition to its permanent collection, the new exhibits always delight and educate. I was there yesterday to see the 200-year chair exhibit as well as its adjacent Bucks County furniture show. Pictures like Jon Brooks's "Solid Elm Ball Chair," Jeffrey Greene's "Windsail Bench" and the Nakashima room give me the muse I need to refresh my spirits.

I had previously been up to Doylestown to see Fonthill Castle, the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, and the Mercer Museum, but wasn't able to visit the Michener Art Museum after seeing all three. My friend hand never seen any of them and wanted to see the Michner Art Museum with me. I asked her to chose between Fontill Castle and the Mercer Museum. She selected Fonthill Castle, so we started with the Moravian Potter and Tile Works while waiting for our timed tour of Fonthill Castle. After having a wonderful visit of both, we stopped for a wonderful lunch at Pennsylvania Soup and Seafood and then spent the remainder of the afternoon at the Michener Art Museum until it was closing. It is an amazing place and a testament to the impact of philanthropy! This is definitely a must see. Michener and his wife gave so much to the community.

Taken as a complete package the Museum is a winner, though no single part would likely head the list in its category. We drove a little under an hour from home in New Jersey with the objective of viewing the permanent collection and learning more about James Michener. We found ourselves in the midst of a small cultural district consisting of this museum and the very different Mercer Museum, across the street, a well designed local library, the historic site of a prison, and a set of thoughtful surrounding gardens - all with free and plentiful parking. To call the Michener a Museum probably sells it short. It is an architectural delight, blending original buildings with new ones, tastefully adorned with sculptures and a separate sculpture garden that hosts outdoor cafe space in clement weather, a detailed display of Michener's contributions to literature and his working habits, a collection of original naturalistic wood furniture by George Nakashima, a single room packed with Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings, a public-friendly art research center and various rotating exhibition spaces. All of this easily viewable on one level, within the space of an hour or two. The staff is particularly welcoming and accommodating. In these times of sensitivity to ethnic and racial concerns the absence of any obvious contributions by minorities might be something the museum's administrators might take on board, though the focal topics might not lend themselves readily to this theme. Worth considering, nonetheless. All in all, the Michener is an excellent example of a regional museum with big aspirations and a demonstrated ability to live up to them. I will certainly be back for more.

The Michener Museum is an impressive legacy created by the renowned local author's generosity - an impressive permanent collection is augmented with regular traveling exhibitions that are always worthy of the venue (some like "From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly — Beyond the Icon," cannot be seen anywhere else in the region). The museum's permanent collection focuses on Bucks County artists including Thomas Hicks, Jonathan Trego, and Edward Redfield. There is a wonderful sculpture garden, cafe, and do not miss the Nakashima reading room - a serene space highlighting the work of another, world class, local craftsman.
