Sir Michael Caine finally sells seven-bedroom Surrey mansion for £3.5m after putting it on the market in 2019 as he and his wife Shakira downsize

Sir Michael Caine has finally sold his sprawling Surrey mansion after putting it up for sale because he and his wife Shakira wanted to downsize.

The Hollywood star, 89, managed to get £3.5 million for the seven-bedroom house, near Leatherhead, after he cut the price by £250,000 last year.

The double Oscar-winner bought the property — with an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, gym and cinema — for £1 million 22 years ago.

Sir Michael first put the 12,000 sq ft home, which comes with a barn conversion with a bar and a two-bedroom cottage, on the market in 2019 for £3.75million.

The actor previously sold his apartment in South beach, Miami, in 2018 for a reported £5.9million ($7.45 million).

In the mid-1990s, he also sold his mansion in Beverly Hills, California but still owns a flat in Chelsea Harbour in west London.

Sir Michael previously spoke about the £120,000 cinema in his Surrey mansion when appearing on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs.

He revealed how the seats of the cinema have a 'refrigerator in the arm with a couple of beers in it'.

The Italian Job star said he wanted to get the best picture possible and so would go for the newest projector because he wanted it to be the 'height of technical advancement'.

The actor also revealed that the master bedroom in the sprawling mansion comes with two en-suite bathrooms as he said separate bathrooms is the key to a happy marriage.

It comes after his wife Shakira confirmed in May that Sir Michael had undergone a major operation at a London hospital.

'He had a back operation quite recently,' she told the Daily Mail at the private view of Sir Michael Caine: The Personal Collection, at Bonhams auction house. 'He had spinal stenosis.'

She described her husband as a 'strong man' as she confirmed that he was doing 'great' and was 'recovering' following the operation.

The Guyanese former model, who he tied the knot with in 1973, added: 'The operation was fantastic. He'll be up and dancing again soon.'

Sir Michael has used a cane since 2018 after a nasty fall on ice left him with a broken ankle.

Earlier this year, he explained: 'I have a spine problem which affects my leg, so I can't walk very well.'

Spinal stenosis is a condition that narrows the spinal canal and can cause back and leg pain. Surgery is usually recommended only when non-surgical treatments have not been effective.

In October, Michael announced that he would likely retire from acting as he described his movie Best Sellers co-starring Aubrey Plaza as 'my last part, really'.

He noted that he has limited mobility and added: 'There's not exactly scripts pouring in for a leading man that's 88, you know?'

But it seems that the actor is yet to star in other projects, as he is set to take part in Czech action historical drama film Medieval, while it is believed he will reprise his role as Arthur Tressler in Now You See Me 3.

Sir Michael, who began acting in 1953 when he took a job at a repertory company in West Sussex, said: 'I haven't worked for two years and I have a spine problem which affects my legs so I can't walk very well'.

Further he pointed to the memoirs he has been publishing over the past several years - The Elephant In Hollywood in 2010 and Blowing The Bloody Doors Off in 2018.

'And I also wrote a book, a couple of books which were published and were successful so I'm now not an actor - I'm a writer,' he said.
