10 places in metro Detroit to buy a fresh turkey

Here's a sampling of metro Detroit places that sell fresh turkeys. This time of year many grocery stores will also have some fresh packaged turkey (not frozen) available.

Keep in in mind small turkeys are in high demand because of smaller gatherings. Be sure to order soon as places have ordering deadlines for Thanksgiving.

In the Eastern Market district, Capital Poultry as been in business for decades selling a variety of fresh poultry. Fresh turkeys are $1.99 per pound.

Ferndale and Grosse Pointe Park

Has a limited availability of air-chilled heritage turkeys for $5.49 per pound. The turkeys average 14 to 16 pounds, are pasture-raised in Michigan's thumb area, hormone and antibiotic free. A deposit is required.

Hartland Farms

Raised free range, no antibiotics and  no hormones on the Roeske family farm. They've stopped taking orders for turkey but typically have some available the week of Thanksgiving.  Turkeys are generally 15 to 25 pounds and $3.65 per pound.

Roperti's Turkey Farm in Livonia, Mich. was established in 1948 by Italian immigrant Tom Roperti, and is now run by his daughter, Christine Roperti. The turkeys have five acres to roam. "No short cuts, no over-crowding, no skimping on quality. No way," says Roperti!
