CSK vs LSG HIGHLIGHTS, IPL 2024: Stoinis 124* powers Lucknow to record chase at Chepauk, second win over Chennai

Thoughts were pretty clear, we needed 14 runs an over, hit the ball was the plan. I don't have any option, the run-rate was like that, these guys was tough to handle, that's what IPL brings. He was too good and he was like a warrior, he was there from the 2nd over, his knock was motivation only. 100% we were in the game and the dugout was sure that we are gonna fight and win the game. These 2 points make a big difference to our team and we are in the business end of the tournament, against CSK who are playing well.

Tough pill to swallow, but good game of cricket. LSG played really well in the back end. We had the game in control till 13-14 overs, but Stoinis played a great innings. (On dew) It played a part, there was a huge amount of dew and it took our spinners out of the game. We could have otherwise controlled the game better and taken it deeper. But these are parts of the game, can’t control it. Jaddu is batting at number 4 since we lost the second wicket within the powerplay. (On Dube’s entry point) Our thinking is clear that after the powerplay if there is a wicket, Shivam will come out to bat. We can’t force batters to get out for that. To be honest, I thought our target wasn't enough, it was just about par because of the dew we’ve seen during our practice sessions.

He starts with a slower-bouncer and Stoinis fails to put bat on ball. Width outside off and Stoinis slaps it through cover. Moeen puts in a firm dive to deny more than a single. Pathirana to Pooran, OUT! High in the air and Shardul holds onto it. In the slot to be hit but Pooran miscues the slog this time. The crowd finds its voice again and it's a huge wicket for CSK. Deepak Hooda is in at 6. He slices the ball through point for a single. Slower bumper outside off and Stoinis dabs the ball just backward point for FOUR! A slinging yorker in the blockhole and it hits Stoinis as it slides down leg. Pathirana slings one into the blockhole and Pooran manages to slice it to cover for a single. Pathirana follows up with a skiddy, length delivery that beats Stoinis with extra pace. Low full-toss and Stoinis pushes it to the deep for a single. Full-toss this time and Pooran squeezes it through cover for FOUR.

When LSG lost KL Rahul, the out-of-touch Devdutt Padikkal ambled. So far this season, he has laboured for runs, his sumptuous touch as evasive as rain on an April evening in Chennai. The ploy looked flawed the moment he walked in, his strike rate until this game a paltry 75. He did himself or his team no favour as he continued slashing and heaving without managing any substantial connection. Somehow, he staggered to a soporific 13 off 18 balls, the strike rate a sparkling 68.42, before Matheesha Pathirana did LSG and Padikkal a big favour by removing him with a devilish length ball that clocked 151 kph and seamed back a bit to beat his tame push neck and crop. His feet were an absolute mess, firm and static on the ground. The hands reacted late to the ball and made just a formal, feeble push. From one of India’s most talented young batsmen, his graph has markedly dipped. Every batsman goes through such phases, but whoever thought of sending him as the Impact Player chasing 211 deserve a lot of plaudits.

Stoinis shuffles across but Deshpande follows with a wide yorker outside-off. They find a single. Pooran squeezes in a run. Full toss from Deshpande and Stoinis pumps it over cover for SIX! Another ball in the blockhole and Stoinis slices it down to third for two runs. Stoinis pushes a yorker to cover and sets off on a risky single. A direct-hit may have been curtains. Another one in the blockhole and Padikkal guides it to deep third for one run. A couple of wides to follow but Pathirana works his variations to good effect. Pathirana to Padikkal, OUT! Cleaned him up! A torpid knock comes to an end as Padikkal plays down the wrong line as Pathirana slings one in to shatter the leg-stump.

Moeen drops one short and Stoinis sweeps it in front of mid-wicket for FOUR. Loopy ball on length and Stoinis smokes it over long-on for SIX - 96 metres. A single to follow. Padikkal swipes one to long-on and reels in two runs. Padikkal gets two more and crosses into double-digits for the first time in 6 innings!

Ravindra Jadeja replaces Shardul

Jadeja starts with a flat delivery to keep Padikkal in his tracks. Jadeja wafts one in and Stoinis steps out and pumps the ball over long-on for SIX. He follows up with a flick through mid-wicket for one run. Padikkal clips one behind square for a single but Jadeja oversteps for a no-ball. Just one off the free hit.

Moeen Ali into the attack

A string of singles as Moeen keeps it tight around the stumps. Padikkal will need to find some quick runs here to keep the tempo up. Six from the over.

Shardul replaces Deshpande

A loosener outside off and Stoinis slashes behind point for FOUR. Short again and Stoinis muscles the ball over cover for another FOUR. Straighter this time and he finds a single. Padikkal opens his account with a run.

Mustafizur Rahman into the attack

Width from Fizz and Rahul creams the ball through extra cover for FOUR. Mustafizur comes around the stumps and straightens a length ball while beating Rahul's blade. Another one as Rahul attempts to make room. This is fine lines from the left-armer. Mustafizur to Rahul, OUT! The early pressure pays off. Rahul smacks the length ball straight to Ruturaj at cover. Devdutt Padikkal walks in as the Impact Sub.

Chahar shapes one away as Rahul swipes across the line and misses. A single to follow. Especially the support from the crowd is amazing. We love to play in Chennai. All grounds are like home grounds but this is what pushes me a little more. Rutu needed 1 over to recover after playing for a long time so I decided to take the bowler on. We have scored a lot of runs, we are 10-15 runs above par. We definitely need to bowl well but we have got 10 runs more. Enjoyed a lot when Rutu bats, his class is on a different level.

Short from Stoinis and Dube clobbers it over deep mid-wicket for a massive SIX! 100 partnership between Dube and Ruturaj in only 46 balls. He skies another short ball but even that falls between the fielders at mid-on. A string of twos for Dube. Stoinis digs out a yorker to mid-off and sets off on a single. There's a shy at the non-striker's and he may fall short this time. OUT! Dube has to depart and the crowd's just been allotted a two-ball Dhoni cameo! Ruturaj attemps to shuffle across for a slog but only gets a single. Dhoni on strike for the last ball. In the blockhole but Dhoni shuffles across and cracks it through mid-wicket for FOUR - CSK finish on a high at 210/4!

Shivam Dube run out (de Kock/Stoinis) 66 (27b 3x4 7x6) SR: 244.44

Short from Mohsin but not short enough as Dube wallops it over wide long-on for a 87m SIX! Width from Mohsin and Dube crunches the ball through extra cover for FOUR. SIX more! Dube bludgeons a wide fuller delivery to bring up his fifty in 22 balls. Dhoni shows his appreciation from the dugout and this is some serious force from the towering left-hander. In the air and dropped! Dube smokes another on through the off-side and de Kock fails to latch onto the ball at mid-off. 17 off the over.

Yash Thakur darts in a wide yorker. KL Rahul has some discussion with the umpire after it's deemed wide. He does not review it though. Well he's changed his mind now and goes up for a revision. The TV umpire upholds the decision. Thakur follows up with another superb yorker. Low full toss and Dube gets a thick outside-edge down to a deep first slip for a single. The runs have dried up a bit now for CSK. In the slot this time and Ruturaj scoops it high over long-on for SIX! Mohsin is back

Short ball to the hip and Jadeja pulls it behind square for a single. Short and wide, Ruturaj slices the ball elegantly behind point for FOUR! A slew of ones and twos to follow. Mohsin to Jadeja, OUT! Short ball angling in and Jadeja gets a tame edge back to Rahul behind the stumps. The off-cutter does the job for Mohsin. Shivam Dube is in at 5.

Thakur back into the attack

Ruturaj dabs the ball down to third for one run. Short and wide, Jadeja pulls it in front of square for another single. Slower bumper and Ruturaj parries it over the keeper for FOUR. A solid cover drive to follow and Ruturaj reels in two more runs. 11 from the over.

There might not be better drivers of a cricket ball in IPL than Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was on an inspired driving spree. There were all kinds—caressed-drives of full balls, on the rise punches with minimal muscle-flex, the patted square drives. The jewel among them was a square drive off leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, against the turn. Bishnoi got a bit too full and Gaikwad merely opened his bat face at the last moment before contact and coaxed the ball between cover and backward point to the fence with a casual swirl of the wrists. From behind the stumps, even LSG skipper KL Rahul, a fine driver himself, could not but gaze covetously at the stroke that melted the inherent non-violence of this format. A front-foot cover-drive on the up off Mohsin Khan would come close. Thus, he drove the LSG bowlers mad with his driving.

Krunal Pandya replaces Bishnoi

Jadeja pre-empts a charge as Krunal darts it wide. He does well to cover the line in the end. Fraction short and Jadeja pulls it to the deep for a single. Krunal drops short and Ruturaj drags it through wide long-on for FOUR. Impeccable timing there from Ruturaj. A single to follow and Ruturaj reaches his half-century in 28 balls!

Marcus Stoinis into the attack

Slower delivery on length and Ruturaj flicks it across for two runs. Another delivery keeps low outside off and Ruturaj taps for a single through point. Short ball angling in and Jadeja parries the ball through fine leg for FOUR. Loud appeal as Stoinis slides one in to the pads and LSG review. Jadeja misses the ball as it skids on to hit his knee roll. Wickets missing on replays and Jadeja survives.

Bishnoi continues. A couple of singles to start the over. Jadeja attempts to drill the ball down the ground but Henry denies the boundary. Bishnoi wafts one in and Ruturaj taps it to cover, dot. Another ball on the full and Ruturaj drives it to long-off for a single. Wide outside off and Jadeja pumps the ball down the ground for FOUR this time. Flatter from Bishnoi and he beats Jadeja's blade outside the off-stump. Seven from the over.

Yash Thakur into the attack

He strays to the pads and Ruturaj flicks it to mid-wicket for one run. Yash to Mitchell, OUT! Another stunner in the field and this time it's Hooda in the act. Length ball from Thakur and Mitchell belts it across the line but finds Hooda at mid-wicket. That ball was travelling fast and LSG recover with another solid grab. Ravindra Jadeja in at 4. Beaten! Yash cuts him in half as he nips one in past the leg-stump. Jadeja could not cover the line that time. Three dots on the trot. Make that four as LSG end the PP on a high.

In the slot from Henry and Ruturaj flays the ball through cover for another FOUR. Room outside off and Ruturaj gently glides it down through third for FOUR. He is on a roll now and LSG are made to rue the sloppy fielding. A string of singles to follow.

A ball ago, KL Rahul moved the first slip to almost second slip. There was not much sign of lateral movement and men behind seemed superfluous. Matt Henry, the Kiwi quick, was not entirely pleased. But he didn’t object to his captain’s decision. The next ball was fuller, moved away a fraction and kissed the edge of Ajinkya Rahane’s flashing blade. The edge seemed chunky enough to evade KL Rahul and burst through where the first slip would have been. But Rahul lunged sideways, body suspended parallel to the ground and plucked the ball with the webbing of his gloves, almost after it had passed him. Upon gathering himself, he sat on one knee, in total disbelief about how he grabbed the edge. He might not be as technically gifted as some of the specialists, doesn’t possess the grace of Wriddhiman Saha, or the poise of MS Dhoni, still needs refinement on several aspects, but you rarely see him spill a catch. And gently, at the ripe time, he has served another reminder of his multidimensional skillsets to the selectors before the T20 World Cup.

Full outside off and Mitchell sweeps to deep mid-wicket for a single. Bishnoi wafts one in and Gaikwad creams it through cover-point for FOUR. Easy.  In the air and just short of short-third! Ruturaj cuts the ball aerially and Henry goes with one hand low to his right but fails to cover the ball as it rushs for FOUR. A single to follow. Mitchell follows up with a drive to long-off for one run

Henry goes full and Mitchell gets an inside-edge on to the leg-side for two runs. Overpitched delivery this time and Henry swings hard past mid-off for two runs as Pooran puts in a superb dive to deny the boundary. Henry cramps up Mitchell but he taps it gently towards cover and sets off on a quick single. Henry slides one in and Ruturaj tucks it behind square for two runs.

Mohsin Khan into the attack

Room on length and Mitchell frees his arms and pumps the ball through point for FOUR, helped by a misfield inside the circle. In the air and dropped! Mohsin extracts a thick outside-edge as Mitchell slashes hard and the ball bursts through Yash Thakur's palms at short third for a single. Mohsin lands on length again and Gaikwad punches the ball crisply through cover for another FOUR! FOUR more as Mohsin errs on length again, allowing Ruturaj ample time to move on the front foot. Two to follow as Ruturaj reels in quick runs. Shoddy fielding from LSG so far.

Full and straight, Rahane taps the ball and Ruturaj steams through for a brisk single. Full outside the off-stump and Ruturaj leaves the ball on length. Negligible movement there as Henry attempts to slide one in. A hint of room and Ruturaj dabs the ball down to third and finds two runs. Henry angles another in and Gaikwad slides it down to third for one run. Tight lines from the Kiwi. Rahane pushes a fuller ball to the on-side. Henry to Rahane, OUT! A blinder from KL Rahul! Full outside off and Henry draws a thick outside edge from Rahane. Rahul flies full-length to his left and grabs a one-hander.

KL Rahul: We'll bowl first. There is a bit of dew, we have trained here and there is a bit of dew tha will play an impact. Wicket is a bit slow and hopefully we can put their batters under pressure. We played well in all three facets, but we have left the result back in Lucknow. We know have challenging Chennai is, everyone will be cheering for them. Same team for us.

On his batting role) All depends on the situation of the game. The other night we’d lost some wickets and needed to rebuild a little bit. When it was my time to go, I decided on a bowler I wanted to go after. After the last game, I’m hoping to bowl a few more overs. Also depends on the dew. I’ve bowled well against these guys in the last couple of games so definitely looking forward to bowling. (On the message from the coach) Just to stay calm. They’ll be quite confident after their last game but this is our home patch and we know what we’re doing so we just want to stay calm. (Crowd wanting Dhoni to bat) It happened last game as well where they were shouting his name. It’s something you just have to block out, obviously we all want to see him bat but there’s a time he prefers to come in so it's noise that you need to block out. It doesn’t get to me too much.

Ian Bishop and Matthew Hayden analyse: It was very hot in the afternoon, but it is cooling down a bit now. We are very central on this lovely playing surface. To the right, it is about 66m and only one meter bigger on the left side. Down the ground it is 78m. This feels like a wicket of two halves. The half where we are standing have some specklings of grass, but the far end has a nice even covering of grass. It is not going to be a 200 sort of wicket, it is going to be a real dogfight. There is going to be some dew today, and it will come early. By 8pm, you can see a considerable amount of moisture on the outfield. But the wicket itself, you got to be in the hunt, you got to be in the fight throughout the game. The KKR game, they got about 137 which was chased down easily. This is going to be a surface like that. It is not going to be easy in the middle phase where you will see a lot of spin here, and that’s where you need to be comfortable batting on this surface. The trick for pacers will be to take pace off, bowl a lot of off cutters and big looping slower ones. This is a critical game, can’t wait for it to get started.
