Maurice Braun (American, 1877-1941)
Paintings
Birth Place: Hungary (Europe)
Biography:
Hungarian-born Maurice Braun developed a successful career as an Impressionist landscape painter in southern California. His art training began in New York City, where he studied still-life and portrait painting at the National Academy of Design and then apprenticed for a year with William Merritt Chase, adopting permanently his Impressionist technique. A spiritualist and philosopher, Braun moved to San Diego in 1910 in order to participate in a new division of the Universal Brotherhood and Theosophical Society. California quickly became his new home: he focused his landscape subjects on the southern California hills and the Sierra Mountains, and he bolstered the local arts community by founding in 1912 the San Diego Fine Arts Academy.
