Fans worry about Matthew Perry’s health in Friends: The Reunion trailer
Following the release of the Friends: The Reunion trailer, some fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Matthew Perry’s “slurred” speech in the video.
One fan wrote: Genuinely worried about Matthew Perry. It seems like he’s maybe had a stroke….?
Another said: “Is Matthew Perry ok? I’ve never heard him speak so slow like this.”
Matthew Perry has faced concern about his appearance before and in 2019 became a topic of conversation after photos went viral showing him look “dishevelled.” Fans commented on his fingernails which prompted Matthew to tweet:
“I’m getting a manicure this morning. That’s okay right? I mean it says man right in the word.”
However, other fans were quick to come to Matthew’s defence, with one tweeting: He said all of 2 syllables holding back tears… That’s “slurred speech” now ?
Another fan said: “Let’s not use the friends reunion to make fun of the way Matthew Perry looks these days. People age, funnily enough. Matthew has been through A LOT since friends wrapped up in 2004. Be respectful instead of judgmental.”
Did Matthew Perry have a stroke?
No, as far as we know, Matthew Perry has not had a stroke. However, the actor has suffered from health conditions before.
In August 2018, a rep for Matthew confirmed he underwent surgery to repair a gastrointestinal perforation. The actor later confirmed this by tweeting that he had spent three months in the hospital.
In the past, Matthew Perry has opened up about his appearance, and how his substance abuse problems affected it whilst he was filming Friends. Whilst talking to ABC News in 2013 about paparazzi photos from those days, Matthew said:
“I honestly recoil. It’s scary to look at that. I was a sick guy.”
Matthew has been open about his substance abuse issues in the past, telling People in 2013: “I couldn’t stop. Eventually things got so bad that I couldn’t hide it, and then everybody knew.”
In 2016 he told BBC Radio 2 that he didn’t remember filming around three years of Friends, stating: “Somewhere between Season 3 and 6 … I was a little out of it.”
In 2011 Matthew voluntarily checked back into rehab, and stated: “I’m making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery. Please enjoy making fun of me on the World Wide Web.”
Then, in 2015, Matthew received the Phoenix Rising Award from the nonprofit drug and alcohol rehabilitation organisation Phoenix House. Following the award, Matthew told The Hollywood Reporter:
“I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my life and a lot of wonderful accolades, but the best thing about me is that if an alcoholic comes up to me and says, ‘Will you help me stop drinking?’ I will say, ‘Yes. I know how to do that.’”
