Ex-Patchogue-Medford Baseball Star Named To 'All-Decade' Team

Matt Vogel, once dubbed the nation's "top pitching prospect," was named to Axcess Baseball's "All-Decade" team on the second team.

MEDFORD, NY — A former pitching prospect for Patchogue-Medford High School has been named to Axcess Baseball's "All-Decade" team. Matt Vogel, dubbed the nation's "top pitching prospect," by MaxPreps.com in 2013, earned the latest accolade Monday as a second-team selection.

Vogel, a right-hander who was born in Syosset, delivered a 90-mph fastball with the Raiders and also boasted hard curveball at 74 mph that had "good depth and bite," according to his player profile on Perfect Game.

was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 36th round in 2013. Never taking the field for the Diamondbacks, Vogel instead played three years college ball at the University of South Carolina. He was again drafted in 2016, this time in the 25th round by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Vogel played A ball in the Rays' minor league organization in 2016 and 2017. He was released by the Hudson Valley Renegades in April 2018, and wound up playing for multiple independent teams, including the New Jersey Jackals in the Canadian-American Association and the York Revolution in the Atlantic League.
