Matt Serra’s BJJ Gym
I just moved out to Long Island and found myself pretty close distance from Matt Serra’s gym. Wondering if anyone that’s trained/trains there could give an opinion. I’m a lowly white belt and could probably learn from anyone, more interested in atmosphere and attitude than high level stuff at this point.
I would love to learn under Matt Serra
Serra's is a great gym.
Former bjj competitor, former MMA fighter, active coach of current MMA fighters. He knows jiu-jitsu for every scenario.
Dream gym right there. Count yourself lucky and lay whatever he wants. Dude seems chill af and also judging by his instructionals is a good instructor.
I dunno, laying whatever he wants sounds a bit cultish and potentially illegal :p
What the others have said, plus Jason Rau is there.
Serra is the man. I think it would just be fun to be around him, great energy. His accolades are indisputable as well.
You can’t go wrong learning under those guys. The belt lineage is very good as well if that matters to you. I have never trained there but have rolled with dozens of Serra trained grapplers over the years and they are always well drilled, technical, and aggressive.
Long island MMA is a great option too, especially if you want solid wrestling training to go with no gi focused BJJ.
Just drop in and check the vibe yourself
Matt is an awesome instructor.
This is an old thread, but I felt the need to let you know. Not going to get into details, just don't get on his bad side. I've heard horror stories. He has a cult-like following, but a lot of the locals really dislike him. For very, very valid reasons.
Old post but figured I would say the gym is great. Good bunch of folks. Solid instruction.
Thanks!
Old thread but I figured I’d mention: It’s a great place to learn. People are nice. All sorts of folks train here. Cops, firefighters, doctors, lawyers, programmers, moms, kids, the whole spectrum. Matt brings great energy to his classes. The other instructors are very knowledgeable as well.
Met him at some random bar event back in the day. Weidmann before success, Pete Sell and more I didn't recognize...
Real cool dude, I belly laughed when he said something along the lines of "Frank Trigg'll never call me a midget again".
Long story short, I'd take the free class with high hopes...
He seems like a fantastic coach from his Instagram, always high energy and seems happy to be there
Matt Serra beat Jean Jacques Machado in BJJ and GSP for the UFC world title. Reckon he might know a thing or two.
It’s phenomenal. Tons of high level guys and super beginner friendly definitely the best gym in western Suffolk
He couldn't even beat GSP a second time, not sure that's a guy you want to learn from.
Lots of amazing gyms in Long Island. I trained at Soca’s in Wantagh and under a Soca Black Belt called High Performance Martial Arts.
