Women Followed Jesus: Mary, the Mother of James and Joses

As is often the case with scripture, we know almost nothing about this woman, other than she has two sons James and Joses.

James, the less, was one of the apostles of Jesus.

James the Less

“Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.”  {Matthew 27:56} and “ and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome.”  {Mark 15:40}

She was one of women who followed Jesus and his disciples, not only serving her savior but also tending to her son or sons.  We are not told anything else about Joses, but he is always mentioned among her sons, which means he was important, although the younger son. Joses is another form of the name Joseph.

She is mentioned in Mark 16 as going with Mary Magdalene and Salome to the tomb to anoint Jesus body and discover the empty tomb.  “And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.”  {Mark 16:8}

All the Women of the Bible says the following about her, “She thus sacrificed both her sustenance and her son for the service of the Master. Motivated by the inner urge of gratitude to Him for all He had done for her, she became generous, faithful, loving and true. Hers was a simple faith and a trusting love.”
