Scholarships
We provide funding to our full-time graduate students so they can devote their time and energy to the successful completion of their studies. Doctoral students who meet the criteria under Section 4 in the Graduate Calendar, receive financial support which meets or exceeds an annual minimum value equal to full-time tuition plus $17,500. As well, the majority of Masters students in research-degree programs receive substantial funding packages.
Change in status: If your status as a student changes – you graduate, take a leave of absence, withdraw from the program – your eligibility for bursaries, academic grants, travel awards, and scholarships may be affected.

Many of these bursaries and Academic Grants are made possible through the generosity and commitment of our donors. Bursaries are based solely on financial need. The Manske-MacLean Bursaries in Chemistry initial funds for these awards were realized through the sale of specimens (alkaloids and related compounds), from the research collections of the late R.H.F. Manske (1901-1977) and the late D.B. MacLean, and were augmented by a generous donation from Merck-Frosst, Montreal. R.H.F. Manske, BSc, MSc. (Queen’s), PhD (Manchester), DSc Hon (McMaster) conducted pioneering research in alkaloid chemistry and was founding editor of ‘The Alkaloids’ a definitive and ongoing series in this area of chemistry. D.B. MacLean was introduced to alkaloid chemistry by Manske at the Research Laboratories of the Dominion Rubber Co. The study of alkaloids and related heterocycles became the focus of his research at McMaster, which he joined in 1954. He was Professor Emeritus in the department of chemistry. These bursaries are to be awarded to graduate students in chemistry by the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the chair of the department of chemistry.

What is a bursary?
A bursary is based solely on financial need. In most cases, information from your OSAP application is used to determine your financial need (some students who don’t receive OSAP can still apply for a bursary).
The McMaster Graduate General Bursary Program application opens mid-August in AwardSpring. Funding is paid out in mid-February.
Who can apply?
Graduate students who demonstrate financial need can apply for the McMaster Graduate General Bursary Program.
Please note: The McMaster Graduate General Bursary Program is not open to international students enrolled in graduate studies, MBA, medicine or physician assistant programs.
Bursary eligibility requirements:
- Be enrolled at McMaster
- Submit a completed application by the bursary deadline
- OSAP students who receive an income update request must complete it by the income update deadline
- Continue to demonstrate financial need throughout the study period
- OSAP is used to demonstrate financial need. Students must accept both loan and grant portions of their OSAP. ONLY graduate students in the following groups will be considered for a bursary without an OSAP application:
- Indigenous students
- students with OSAP government aid restrictions include:
- academic progress restriction
- income verification restriction
- provincial and/or federal default restriction
- credit check restriction
- students with a disability taking a reduced course load
- students with out-of-province student aid
- part-time students
- students receiving social assistance

The Passi Bursary was established in 1997 by Chitra and Narendar Passi under the McMaster Student Opportunity fund initiative in the belief that all students should have the opportunity to pursue their educational goals. The Anne Hall Memorial fund was established in 1989 by family and friends in memory of a very special physiotherapist who died prior to completing her Doctoral studies in Medical Sciences at McMaster. Awards will be available yearly to physiotherapy graduate student(s) enrolled in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. The funds are to be awarded to high academic standing physiotherapy graduate students based on social accountability and good citizenship and who demonstrates financial need.

The Catherine Jane Stephenson Memorial Bursary was established in 2005 by Jean and Bruce Stephenson in memory of their daughter Catherine Jane Stephenson, a 1978 graduate of McMaster University. To be granted to a student enrolled at the Master’s or PhD level in biology and who demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to students whose research is located in Northern Canada, including northern parts of the provinces.

The Cecil and Yvette Yip Graduate Bursaries were established in 2003 by Dr. Cecil Yip (Class of 1959) and Mrs. Yvette Yip to recognize and encourage graduate students whose innovative work in the physical sciences and engineering crosses formal disciplinary boundaries. Preference will be given to students in any graduate program in the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering, whose thesis research demonstrates excellence in integrating engineering science within the study of biology. The students must also demonstrate financial need to be eligible. A variable number of bursaries are to be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies.

The Diane and Colin Wood Bursary in Respiratory Health was established in 2008 by Diane Wood and Colin Wood, BComm (Class of ’78). To be granted by the School of Graduate Studies, on the recommendation of the director of the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, to a graduate student who demonstrates financial need and is conducting research in the area of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Preference will be given to students studying emphysema.

The Dr. Jordan Page Harsham Bursary was established in 2011 by the Harshman Fellowships Society to honour Dr. Jordon Page Harshman, past president of the society. To be awarded annually by the School of Graduate Studies, based on the recommendation of the Associate Dean, Health Sciences (Graduate), to a graduate student in the Faculty of Health Sciences who is engaged in medical research and who demonstrates financial need as well as good citizenship, good social responsibility, and leadership in society. Preference will be given to students in the following three areas in descending order: The Michael G. DeGroote institute for Infectious Disease Research, the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute and the department of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics. Recipients will be provided with a certificate from the Faculty of Health Sciences detailing the purpose and history of this award at McMaster University. Students who are recipients of an Ontario Graduate Scholarship are not eligible for this Bursary.

Established in 2023 by the Wilson family to honor Dr. Moyra Allen, a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from McMaster University in 1984 and the prestigious Officer of the Order of Canada in 1987 for her leadership in shaping nursing to be an innovative approach to health care that focuses on health and is responsive to the changing needs of a society and its families. To be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies, on the recommendation of the School of Nursing to graduate students enrolled in the School of Nursing who self-identify as a member of an equity-deserving group and who demonstrate academic and research excellence and financial need.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships provide financial support to elite national and international postdoctoral researchers who will positively contribute to the country’s economic, social and research-based growth. McMaster University strives to attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent. The value of the fellowship is $70,000 per year for two years, and distributed equally across CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC agencies. The award does not include the costs of research.

Fellowships provide support for highly qualified applicants in all areas of health research at the post-PhD degree or post-health professional degree stages to add to their experience by engaging in health research either in Canada or abroad.

Up to $60,000 per annum for up to five years.
Eligibility
At the time of application, the Nominated Principal Applicant must be/have:
- a trainee, with an identified primary supervisor,
- commit 75% of your time in the research fellowship role to the proposal,
- hold or be completing a PhD degree or a regulated health professional degree by the last possible date to take up the fellowship.

Under the terms of a bequest to Hamilton Community Foundation by the late Eugene B. Eastburn, a two-year Fellowship will be awarded for full-time postdoctoral studies in engineering or sciences (Natural or Physical sciences, including Health Sciences).

The Governor General’s Academic Medals will be awarded to two graduate students who achieve the highest academic standing in their respective graduate doctoral or master’s degree program. The L’Oréal Canada For Women in Science Research Excellence Fellowships, with support from the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, recognize the outstanding contributions of women in science as part of the international For Women in Science Program.

The Dr. Walter Smeltzer Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 by Mrs. Grace Smeltzer in memory of her husband, Dr. Walter William Smeltzer, researcher and professor in Materials Science at McMaster University from 1959 to 1992. The MIRA and Labarge Scholarship program offers awards at the master’s and PhD level in two distinct streams. The Labarge Mobility Scholarship supports applicants whose research on aging includes a focus on mobility. The MIRA Scholarship in Aging Research supports interdisciplinary aging research in one of MIRA’s identified areas of focus.
The scholarships are open to master’s students beginning a new McMaster graduate degree in the 2022/2023 school year and PhD students entering year one or two of their studies. The Ronald K. Ham Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Ronald K. The Thomas Neilson Scholarship will be awarded to the Biochemistry graduate student deemed to show the greatest potential as an independent scientist at the time of transfer to the PhD program. The GSA Travel Assistance Grants are funded from the proceeds of the Graduate Students Association Development Fund, which receives contributions from graduate students and the University. The GSA Travel Assistance Grants fund is administered through the School of Graduate Studies. The GSA Travel Assistance Grants are designed to enable graduate students to travel to undertake research or present at conferences relevant to their field of study. There are a fluctuating number of awards available each semester.
The successful recipients will be determined randomly by selecting one recipient from each faculty (Health Sciences, Engineering, Science, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business) and the balance of the awards left in a given period will be randomly selected from a list of the remaining applicants from all faculties combined.

The Raynsford-Eatock Graduate Travel Scholarship in Greek Studies was established in 2006 in memory of Marilyn Raynsford-Eatock through funds bequeathed by her father, Frederick Raynsford.
