Highlights

  • Capcom has a stellar track record with genre-defining games like Alien vs. Predator and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.
  • Mega Man 9 edges out classics like Mega Man 2 with its stellar campaign, arsenal, and soundtrack.
  • Resident Evil Remake sets the standard for survival horror with punishing game mechanics and timeless graphics.

At this point (2024), you can't deny that Capcom's not only one of the best developers in the world, currently, but frankly, of all time. The company's made so many genre-defining games that changed everything, with even certain titles like Final Fight and the first Resident Evil needing to succeed for the developer to survive.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Review - A Triumphant Adventure
Dragon's Dogma 2 is a phenomenal achievement in emergent gameplay, gripping combat, and open-world design.

That's something out of a movie. There's so many great games, and picking out the best is incredibly challenging. A title needs to be considered an all-time great within its genre or in all of Capcom games. Haunting Ground and God Hand are fantastic, but they aren't all-time great material.

Updated on May 13, 2024: We've added our video to this list for you to take a look at, so you can see which Capcom games are top tier.

10 Alien Vs. Predator

One Of The Greatest Beat-'Em-Ups Of All Time

Linn fighting aliens in Alien vs. Predator arcade.

Release Year

Platforms

1994

Arcade

Going back to Capcom's roots in the arcade, they've made some of the greatest beat-'em-ups of the 80s and 90s. Games like Final Fight are some of the 80s best, but the 90s beat-'em-ups were far superior, with Alien vs. Predator being the zenith of Capcom's work.

You have so many enemies on screen here, but it's a lot of fun and much better balanced than prior genre hits. Unfortunately, AVP has never been rereleased outside of a Capcom plug-and-play system in 2019, but with the AVP IP being owned by Disney in 2024, maybe things can go differently.

9 Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

The Best Street Fighter

Ryu fighting against Fei Long in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

Release Year

Platforms

1994

Arcade, 3DO, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Out of the entire Street Fighter series, Street Fighter 6 is up there and very well could be the best later in its life. However, for now, the best has to be Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

It was the ultimate evolution of Street Fighter 2, being the most balanced, and added a few key features to the franchise, including Super moves and throw teching. Considering throw teching is such a key aspect of modern fighting games because it feels fair for everyone, Super Turbo was especially important.

8 Marvel Vs. Capcom 2

A Fighting Game GOAT

Sentinel Shooting a Beam in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2

Release Year

Platforms

2000

Arcade, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox, Xbox 360, iOS

Capcom's other big fighting game staple outside of Street Fighter is Marvel vs. Capcom. Both MVC2 and MVC3 are fantastic, but the former has to be the best, hands down. The series always had an interesting balance, with so many overpowered characters, but Ultimate Marvel 3 just went way overboard.

Activate level three X-Factor with Vergil, and you'll win virtually every time. MVC2 was much better balanced, and comebacks were actual comebacks. The comic book-style 2D graphics have a timeless quality to them, and you have a great character roster on offer here. Like AVP, though, the only bad thing is getting your hands on the game, as the console ports are very expensive.

7 Mega Man 9

The First Great Retro Revival

Hornet Man launching bees at Mega Man in Mega Man 9

Release Year

Platforms

2008

Wii, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC

Picking the best Mega Man game is a ridiculously hard task because 2, 3, and 9 are so close in quality, but 9 just takes the slight edge. 2 and 3 both have issues with the Wily castle, with Mega Man 2 having that atrocious boss fight that requires crash bombs, and Mega Man 3's Wily castle is way too easy.

The platformer is one of the oldest and most beloved genres of all time. If you're a fan of them, these are the titles you NEED to play.

Mega Man 9 has the best overall campaign from start to finish, with a killer soundtrack and great weapons. The second instalment still has probably the best music and arsenal, but 9 has the best total package with all three elements. It's so close, though, and everyone will have their favorite out of the three titles.

6 Okami

Hideki Kamiya's a legendary Japanese game dev most known for his action titles. However, his best game is a Zelda clone named Okami. Okami is brilliant in virtually all aspects. The characters are great and far more entertaining than the character writing in the recent Zelda games at the time.

The art style still holds up today, and level design remains on par with Zelda as well. It has a good length, feeling epic, but not overly long, like Red Dead Redemption 2. Any Zelda fan must play this game, because it is simply greatness on a different level.

5 Monster Hunter: World

January 26, 2018

In the West, Monster Hunter remained a pretty niche series until the release of Monster Hunter: World. It was not only a worldwide breakout hit but a massive evolution of the series that was desperately needed. Before this entry, Monster Hunter was developed on lower-end hardware like the Wii and 3DS, holding back these games' potential.

Monster Hunter: World fully made use of the PS4 and Xbox One's hardware to create the biggest, most beautiful, and best game of the franchise to date. So many quality-of-life improvements were added that made Monster Hunter easier to get into, the gameplay was improved, and with plenty of regular content updates, it was an effective live service game as well. It just makes you wonder how Monster Hunter: Wilds could potentially top this RPG masterpiece.

4 Devil May Cry 3

The Best DMC Game

Dante presses Lady against the wall on the left - Devil May Cry 3

Release Year

Platforms

2005

PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Switch, PC

A lot of people would say that Devil May Cry 5 is the greatest title in the series, and while the combat's the best, the level design doesn't stack up. It can be painfully linear at times akin to Final Fantasy 13. The DMC title that has the best combination of combat, story, and level design would be DMC3.

The story's absolutely amazing, with a bunch of great and memorable characters, the level design's solid and interconnected, and the combat was the best of the series up to that point. Plus, the soundtrack has to be one of the best in all of action gaming.

3 Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials And Tribulations

A Perfect Visual Novel Game

Godot, coffee-loving masked prosecutor from Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations who bears a grudge against Phoenix Wright

Release Year

Platforms

2004

GBA, DS, 3DS, Wii, Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, iOS, Android

Out of the Ace Attorney series, the fan favorite is usually Trials and Tribulations, and for good reason. First off, the villain is an all-time great in Capcom's line-up: Godot. His coffee-loving, smug personality makes him a figure you can't help but be glued to every time he's on-screen.

The story's a great finale to the original trilogy, tying everything back, complete with awesome flashback sections. What's also nice is that there's not nearly as much ridiculous, unbelievable stuff in the story as prior titles. You won't see a massively heavy bust hiding in a damn wheelchair in this game.

2 Resident Evil Remake

A Survival Horror GOAT

Jill running away from a Crimson Head in the Resident Evil 1 remake.

Release Year

Platforms

2002

GameCube, Wii, Switch, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC

There's a reason why the Resident Evil Remake remains so acclaimed in the survival horror genre, and if you've never played it, you might not understand. This game's as master-crafted as it is for two big reasons: the level design and game mechanics.

There's so many things in this game that punish poor play or add more depth, like the Crimson Heads, Zombies being able to move to other rooms, the broken doorknob, and even stuff like surprise encounters when you're exploring a room for a second time. The pre-rendered graphics still look pretty good today, and the monsters are just as scary as ever. No matter how much time passes, the Resident Evil Remake will always be a fantastic survival horror experience.

There should be no question that RE4 Classic is among the top ten most influential games ever made, and it still feels fresh. Comparing it to the RE4 Remake is a good contrast because the remake's gameplay feels more modern and, in the process, strips away much of what made the original so special.

The fact that you can't move and shoot at the same time adds a lot of depth to the gameplay and combined with some of the best level design in any Capcom title, you can see why people still replay RE4 all these years later. The remake's still amazing with a better story, but the superior gameplay has to go to the OG.
