What is the Appeal of Fighters on Handheld Platforms?

Question

In my mind, the appeal of fighting games has always been improving through player vs player competition, and the resulting community. This kind of environment seems like it would be the most difficult to accomplish for games on handheld devices. And yet, I often see people call titles like SvC Millennium Chaos and other handheld exclusives some of the best fighting game titles. I can understand the gameplay being good, but are there any other reasons people like handheld titles, if PvP competition isn't the goal?

Some people do play fighting games for single player content

SF Alpha 3 on the PSP had a lot of fun single player stuff to do, and It was enough to play against the comp during my commute then come home and play SFIV with friends for the more social aspects.

I've played plenty of handheld only fighting games cause they weren't on console like gundam vs gundam and we definitely played competitively

Flappy fighter was pretty fun and the same devs did Santa fighter. Simple and fun fighting game. Could Def see some kind of online play that's less competitive but atleast entertaining

The first Street Fighter I ever put a lot of time into was Alpha 3 Max for the PSP. I also played a ton of Dark Resurrection on it. It’s a fun way to kill time while riding the train.

It’s nice to get some practice on the go, or beating an arcade ladder when you feel like it without being glued to a screen.

Handhelds can still do multiplayer in some capacity, and the community will do absolutely everything to make multiplayer accessible. Tekken Advance, for example, has a scene thanks to the rise of FPGA consoles.

Some handheld versions, prior to Switch and Steam Deck, were basically identical to console and arcade in gameplay. Tekken 5 DR and Tekken 6 on PSP plays identically to the original, with the added benefit of a PlayStation style D-pad that several players were accustomed to. Guilty Gear +R on Vita is identical to what we have on Steam, minus rollback. Same applies to UMvC3, MK9, PSAS, Divekick, Dengeki, and several others. They make for decent versions on the go for practice.

Otherwise, you play for whatever unique content they have. SF43D is funny ‘cause it has one button specials for Guile.

I know several people IRL who buy fighting games on Switch, and the awesome part about Switch ports is that multiplayer just works. They’re excellent for local play ‘cause the portability is unrivaled, though I suppose you’ll still need a hub for USB controllers (I use a Snackbox, which is Switch compatible, but it’s wired).

Do you have the discord for Tekken Advance fight scene. Seems interesting.

To my knowledge, only NYC Tekken (Discord) made a known Tekken Advance tournament, so it’s just a locals thing (I’m not from East Coast) and isn’t Tekken Advance specific.

Tournament here.
