~ Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes' opening text

Summary

Marvel vs. Capcom, also referred to as the VS. Series, is a crossover fighting game franchise developed and published by Capcom. The series revolves around characters from Marvel Comics and Capcom's video game franchises fighting each other in tag team battles, either in teams two or three. While the first two games were only focused on Marvel's properties, they share the same continuity as crossover titles. Two tie-in comic books were also released within the series, granting expansion to the existing narrative.

Power of the Verse

Characters within this verse boast rather powerful feats. Even a non-combatant like Phoenix Wright can get up from Small Building level attacks, while mid tier characters like Mech-Zangief can create Large Country level explosions. A villain such as Galactus is known for casually destroying planets with enough power to reach Dwarf Star level, the likes of which can be competently fought and defeated by most of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's roster. Even earlier into the series, villains such as Thanos and Onslaught are said to be superior to the world eater himself. Jean Grey is capable of destroying entire galaxies as a result of being the Phoenix Force's avatar, making her Galaxy level. The Infinity Gems are also quite powerful, with two gems being capable of fusing four realms together, garnering Low Multiverse level. While powered by these two gems, Ultron-Sigma boasted power that rivalled even the remaining four used together. The completed Infinity Gauntlet stands as the strongest thing in the entire verse, as it allows its user to reshape all of existence, which is composed of at least 110 universes.

Speed for the verse is overall in a decent spot. Low tiers reach Subsonic due to moving fast enough to create afterimages. Mid tiers scale to Albert Wesker, who is stated to be capable of dodging bullets, earning a Supersonic rating. Chris Redfield’s Satellite Laser can travel from the satellite’s position in space to Earth in under a second, likely giving it a Relativistic attack speed. High tier characters are FTL, originating from Nova, a superhero who can fly faster than the speed of light as well as react fast enough to make precise turns while doing so.

In terms of abilities, liberties are taken compared to the source material. Ryu and Sakura can take on different forms that grant them new movesets in the middle of combat while those with technological weaponry in battle like War Machine and Mega Man have access to new and destructive arsenals. Even more "grounded" fighters like Jill Valentine and Frank West can breathe in space. Regardless of these creative decisions, they have several formidable abilities throughout the series. In a state meant to restrain its sheer power, Abyss' very presence alone creates planetary ranged Death Manipulation and Disease Manipulation. Beings such as Dormammu and Shuma-Gorath have access to several powerful hax, such as Reality Warping, Soul Manipulation, Space-Time Manipulation, Immortality Negation, Matter Manipulation, and Mind Manipulation among various others.

Verse Standards

To prevent any confusion on this verse, the following includes important to understanding this verse and how it functions on the wiki.

  • The general narrative of Marvel vs. Capcom, as well as more detail on the following rules, can be found in this thread. It is heavily advised that the narrative discussed in this thread is thoroughly read over when attempting to discuss the continuity in other threads.
    • Do not attempt to use Ken's ending from Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter to dismiss the entire crossover as his dream, given this ending is clearly played as a gag and is debunked by several factors tying together the games as a legitimate continuity.
  • An explanation on the cosmology of the Marvel vs. Capcom continuity can be found here.
  • Scaling must originate from any official portrayals of story content and statements. The mainline comics and original video games that the rosters are pulled from do not count.
    • Pre-battle quotes are viable for indicators of powerscaling, skill scaling, and abilities (ex. Wolverine referencing him and Hulk's battles ending in draws).
    • Win animation quotes, such as Vergil's against Ghost Rider cannot be used as it is not an official fight. However, certain victory screen quotes can be used depending on the context (ex. Trish believes Dante and Vergil are fairly equal fighters).
    • Non-canon endings where a character defeats another can be used for scaling, as they imply the capability of a character's strength (ex. Omega Red is capable of killing Ryu and Ken).
    • Avoid scaling other characters to Phoenix through Onslaught. While Onslaught was stated to be superior to Thanos and Galactus, the latter of which was confirmed to exist in the Marvel vs. Capcom continuity as far back as Marvel Super Heroes, Jean had not yet become the Phoenix during this era. This is shown during X-Men: Children of the Atom, in which she is still Marvel Girl. Ergo, Onslaught being superior to previous enemies would not include Dark Phoenix.
    • Unlike other bosses in the Marvel vs. Capcom series, Abyss is the only one of these characters that has the implications that the larger cast's collaborative efforts were required to defeat it. Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes only has one ending, in which we see the characters departing after having defeated Abyss, whereas a game such as Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 shows us that multiple characters can defeat the likes of Galactus by themselves. This is why several High 5-A characters tend to scale above bosses such as Galactus, Thanos, and Onslaught to varying levels, while Abyss remains a narratively much greater threat.
  • For a non-original character to earn a profile on the wiki, two of the following three requirements must be met:
    • The character has a significant enough plot relevance or presence.
    • The character is playable or a boss.
    • The character has abilities that do not simply mirror their canon counterparts.
  • Trailer battles cannot be used for scaling, as they seemingly do no align with the official story presented in the games and tie-in comics.
