About the author
A devotee of arcade fighting games since first seeing a Street Fighter 2 cabinet in a bowling alley in his childhood, Joe discovered the nascent fighting game scene in the late 90s through ancient internet meeting spots like alt.games.sf2 and fighters dot net. He started traveling to and helping run tournaments throughout the early to mid aughts. Through this he connected with BradyGames, where his first project was an official guide for Street Fighter Alpha Anthology on PlayStation 2.
From there, Joe wrote dozens of official guidebooks for BradyGames till its absorption by Prima Games, then for Prima Games till the printed game guide industry all but ended. He wrote for almost every genre of game and for almost every major game company, with a particular focus on fighting games; at this point, nobody has written more officially-endorsed English-language fighting game guides than he has. After the fall of Brady/Prima, Joe has transitioned into designing combat and writing game narratives, most notably in Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, for which he designed the Power Ranger version of Street Fighter's Chun-Li.

This is a great guide for someone like me. MvC3 is a crazy complicated game with tons of stuff going on. Compared to SF4, here's way more characters, you use a 3-man team, the Y dimension is utilized far more, etc. There's a lot to learn. This guide gives you not just the basic nuts & bolts but the more advanced information you need to become a competent player.
The guide starts with the extremely useful 34 page outline (in SMALL fonts - same for the entire guide) of gameplay systems, but the rundowns of every character. The character rundown here is not like the Prima SSF4 guide, which was content to show special moves and a brief section on basic strategies. Each character here has an incredibly detailed rundown on strengths and weaknesses, complements, combos, and strategy ideas for important situations in the game. For example, you can learn about character X's options in the air, on the ground, in the corner, on offense, on defense, while utilizing X-Factor, as an assist, and so forth. It's really, really good stuff and it's something that I think any player of this game could benefit from.
Keep in mind, this guide is not afraid to liberally use the crazy fighting game terminology that other guides I have read shy away from. It includes a glossary so people can look up any terms they are unaware of. Of course, once you learn this terminology you can hop on internet sites and communicate (and understand) what people are talking about when they talk about this game - a useful tool!
My only real complaint about this guide is that the organization is all over the place. It's clear the authors worked really hard to pack as much info as possible and as such paragraphs are kind of laid out wherever and blocks of text are crammed in wherever applicable. But, this is a small price to pay considering what you are getting.
Highly recommended!
Why is this guide so good?
- It has frame data, tons of it, for every move. Ever wonder how long it takes for Haggar's pipe attack to come out, how long it actively does damage, how long it takes before you can act again if you used the pipe, how long before you can act again if you blocked it? All of this information is in the book, in an easy to reference format.
- It has combos, good ones, and very detailed. Most guides will give you combos you can never use in a real match: Combos that start with a really unsafe lead-in, or have no way to confirm the next hit. Combos on the internet tend to just be the commands, with no description of how and when to use them. The combos in this book are both practical and detailed. They go so far as to tell you when to adjust your positioning in the combos.
- It has strategies, for all levels of play. If you are just getting started, it will tell you what moves to favor for their safety and general utility. If you are an intermediate player, it will tell you how to take advantage of your character's strengths and compensate for their weaknesses. For the advanced players, the book has advanced tactics that use the special properties of attacks and assists to get the upper hand.
Fighting game guides have become something of a joke, in the community. With guides of this quality, though, that reputation might just change.
Coming from a 90s street fighter background, it was a good introduction the whole VS series.
Still trying to adapt the tag system, but the guide gives you good tips on how to put a team together and using the assists to help your team.
Very usefull if your new to the MVC series
I was hesitant at first because I NEVER buy game strategy guides, but honestly this is not a strategy guide in the normal sense. Most strategy guides tell you how to beat the game, this guide tells you how to play and improve your game and compete at a high caliber like you will face in online ranked mode. The overall book just brings one word to mind: quality.

The game is very complex and if you are a novice or intermediate player then this guide will be very helpful to you as it has been for me. Be prepared to do a lot of reading because there is a lot to get through. It could even be of use to pro players as it includes frame data for every character including the DLC characters.
Overall highly recommended and essential for anyone interested in playing the game seriously.
