Like 5 people died nearly simulatenously at the end. I thought it was lame and tacky. Sure, I can empathize with Sorcese's reasoning. He didn't want The Departed II. He didn't want to turn it into a franchise. The studio was correct for criticizing the ending. B/c it was lame and tacky, tho, I did managed to cry, anyway. But The Departed II is also a terrible idea. It's a stand alone film. I don't mind if one died or the other. But to have 5 different people die at once. In my opinion, it should've just been Jack Nicolson's character to die. That OR both Nicolson and DiCaprio should've died, and let Matt Damon live. The black man dying was just plain weird and unnecessary. Nobody wanted the black man to die. Or some rando saying, "I'm one of Costello's men and we need to stick together." Just randomly saying that. It's weird, strange, and unusual.

That being said, I did cry when Jack Nicolson died. I'm still crying because of Jack NIcolson's death. At best, 3 of the characters dying was unnecessary. At worst, 4 of the character's dying was unnecessary.

This movie was produced in 2006. It is 2 hrs 31 minutes long. Jack Nicholson is spectacular. The unpredictable violence will jolt you out of your barcalounger recliner in a fashion you've never experienced. No giving away plot lines here, but when you start watching, you cannot stop watching. Make plenty of popcorn, bring pounds of snacks and a case of soft drinks and a pitcher of tea because you don't want to even pause this movie if you have to go back to the kitchen to get something else to nibble on.

I know. I know. Good Fellas. Casino. The Irishman. Everyone has their favorite Scorcese film. This one's mine. The writing and editing are so tight. The cast is ridiculous (who's NOT in this?). And the directing is a guy at the peak of his game. The twists and turns. The suspense. Right to the end. DiCaprio is so believable in this starring role. Maybe one of Nicholson's finest performances. Certainly one of Matt Damon's best. This is a film that stands up to repeated watching. And it just gets better.

The Departed is definitely one of the best movies of 2006 and deserves all the accolades that it has received since last fall. It's certainly Martin Scorsese's best film since Casino. This movie also does for the Irish mob what Goodfellas and Casino did for the Italian Mafia. It gives the viewer a close look at the horrible violence, gut-wrenching fear, and unexpected betrayal that comes to anyone involved in this type of business for any length of time.

The Departed deals with Frank Costello (played by Jack Nicholson and based somewhat loosely on the real James "Whitey" Bulger) who is the head kingpin of the South Boston criminal underworld. He's smart, charming, and utterly ruthless in how he conducts business. You never screw around with Costello because he'll kill you in a heartbeat. Planning ahead for the future, Costello begins grooming a young Colin Sullivan (the older Colin is played by Matt Damon) for a life of crime and to eventually enter the Boston Police Academy so that he'll have a mole inside the police department. Once Colin makes the grade, Costello helps him to achieve career-making arrests and to advance up the ladder inside the department. While this is happening, Billy Costigan (played by the underrated Leonardo DiCaprio) strives to rise above his Boston heritage and to make it into the Massachusetts State Police. Two higher-ups in the state police (played by Martin Sheen and Mark Wahlberg) see Billy's potential and offer him the opportunity to go undercover and to hopefully infiltrate Costello's criminal network. To achieve this, Billy is expelled from the State Police Academy under false charges of assault and sent to jail for several months. When he finally gets out, Billy starts selling drugs on the street with his cousin and quickly comes to the attention of Costello. Costello remembers Billy as a boy and admired his straightforward father. This leads to a job offer from Costello, enabling Billy to get his foot inside the door. From this point on the movie is basically about Billy and Colin doing their jobs as a mole and trying not to get caught. It won't be long, however, before the two young men realize that both the Mob and the police have come to the conclusion that there's a rat inside their organization. Both Colin and Billy then play a cat-and-mouth game as they each seek to discover the identity of the other. The hunt for the mole's identity is intense. This is the heart of the story and what keeps you glued to the edge of your seat. You never know what's going to happen next. And, no matter how you think the movie is going to end, you'll be wrong. In fact, I was totally blown away by what happened as each twist caught me by surprise, leaving me completely unprepared for the next one. I was finally left sitting on the couch with my mouth hanging open at the final scene. Few movies have the audacity to end in such a violent mode. Only someone like Scorsese could actually pull it off and not lose the audience in the process.

The Departed is a tight, fast-paced, character-driven film about the life of crime, betrayal, and the emotional drain it has on everyone involved. No one is left unscathed. The performances by all the main actors are superb and deserving of an Academy Award, especially Leonardo DiCaprio. He captures the emotional turmoil and fear that can literally overwhelm an undercover agent, who teeters on the edge life and death each and everyday. Martin Scorsese once again proves that when it comes to crime drama, he's one of the top directors working in the business today. This man finally deserves to win his Oscar for Best Director. If he doesn't get it for this film, then there's someone very wrong with the Academy of voters for The Departed is one powerful, violent movie that stays with you long after the end credits have rolled. One last comment that deals with the Irish music that was played at different times during the film. Whenever I heard it, I kept expecting to see Michael Flattery from Lord of the Dance appear, doing his version of the Irish folk dance. I know that it made me want to get up and dance, which I don't think was its intended purpose. Finally, the two-disc Special Edition is the one to buy. The second disc is loaded with extras: a 25-minute featurette on the Real Boston Mob, a 90-minute documentary with Martin Scorsese discussing his life and his most famous films, another 25-minute featurette on how New York City's Little Italy affected Scorsese and his work in the film industry, and a look at several scenes that were deleted from the movie. The Departed is so good that I'm going to watch it again in just a few minutes. Usually I like to wait a couple of weeks before seeing a movie for the second time. Not this one! Highly recommended!!!

Martin Scorsese’s `The Departed` in my opinion is one of the best crime dramas ever produced. The movie was based loosely on the head of the Irish mafia empire figure James `Whitey` Bulger who had the FBI and Boston law on his payroll, and was later to become known as one of the most influential figures in crime. I just finished reading a book of interviews conducted with Bulger while in prison titled James `Whitey` Bulger: The Last Interviews, and didn’t fully realize `The Departed` was based on Bulger’s real life character until both reading his comments about his dislike for the portrayal of his in the movie. That sparked my interest. I purchased the movie and though it is fictional, the movie captured the intensity of organized crime in the Boston underworld in a masterful style. `The Departed` is a masterpiece deserving of the Academy Award it won for Best Picture. Each cast member gave a pitch perfect performance and I was completely immersed in the grim underworld it painted in this film so eloquently.

The special documentary features with Martin Scorsese talking about Bulger’s influence on the film and the effort to research Boston’s crime history is what helped bring this story a sense of realism and depth. I plan to watch it again to see what I missed in a story that was formed with so many layers of delicate nuances. It’s a film that the AFI should enter include in its greatest film category. Highly recommended.

Eigentlich konnte bei dem 2006 gedrehten Polizei- und Mafiathriller "Departed - Unter Feinden" nichts schiefgehen. Martin Scorsese, einer der besten Hollywood-Regisseure, hat mit diesem Film das noch erfolgreichere Remake des Hongkong-Thrillers "Infernal Affairs" von Andrew Lau und Alan Mak inszeniert. Das Original wurde nicht ganz so bekannt und es lag an Scorsese diesen sehr interessanten Stoff fürs große Publikum zu machen, denn die Geschichte ist genial, eine der besten Ideen, die das Genre je zu bieten hatte. "Departed" erzählt von Polizisten und Gangstern, von Gangstern, die sich bei der Polizei eingeschleust haben und von Polizisten, die undercover als Gangster unterwegs sind. Ort des Geschehens: Boston, Massachuetts.

Der Boss der irischen Mafia heißt Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) und die örtliche Polizei will ihn schon lange ins Gefängnis bringen, doch nie reichten die Beweise aus. Dies gelingt dem ausgekochten Gangsterboss vor allem durch seine ihm untergebenenen Bandenmitglieder, ein eingeschworenes Team. Er hat auch einen Maulwurf bei der Polizei, der ihn immer mit den wichtigen Informationen versorgt. Dieser Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) wurde schon als kleiner Junge (Conor Donovan) von dem Paten gefördert und hat es nun geschafft erfolgreich die Ausbildung zum Polizist zu absolvieren... fast zeitgleich mit dem jungen Billy Costigan (Leonardo diCaprio), der eher aus kriminellen Verhältnissen entstammt. Durch diesen Hintergrund wird der junge Polizeikadett Costigan für Captain Queenan (Martin Sheen), dem Leiter der Undercover-Abteilung und für dessen rechte Hand Staff Sergeant Bryce Dignam (Marc Wahlberg) interessant. Sie können Billy für eine gefährliche Mission gewinnen. Er soll sich in Costellos Bande einschleusen und undercover Beweise sammeln, dass man den Gangter endlich für lange hinter Gitter bringt. Dieser Costello ist nicht nur ein sehr aggressiver Mann, sondern auch sehr gerissen. Denn er bekommt von seinem Mann Colin immer rechtzeitig Warnungen, wenn es brenzlig wird. Queenan und Dignam vermuten schon lange, dass in ihren eigenen Reihen einer der besten Männer des Gangsters tätig ist. Beide Männer steigen in ihrem Wirkungskreis auf. Colin wird leitender Staff Sergeant in der Abteilung Special Investigation United und Billy steigt gleich hinter Mr. French (Ray Winestone) zum zweiten Vertrauensmann Costellos auf. Und beide Männer machen die Bekanntschaft mit der Polizeipsychologin Madolyn Madden (Vera Farmiga). Bald bemerkt auch Costello das in seinen Reihen ein Polizeispitzel operiert...

Scorsese hatte ja mit "Kap der Angst" bestens bewiesen, dass er sich neben dem Original in Punkto Tiefgang nicht verstecken muss.
Beste Voraussetzungen für die Oscarverleihung 2007 - und tatsächlich gewann "Departed" in den Kategorien "Bester Film", Bestes Drehbuch" und "Bester Schnitt".
Und auch für den Regisseur Martin Scorsese hat es nach dem 6. Anlauf mit dem lang ersehnten Oscar geklappt, die beste Konkurrenz der letzten 10 Jahre geschlagen.
Insgesamt ist der Originalfilm aus Hongkong aber besser, ein bisschen Substanzverlust zum Original ist
Was Scorsese im Vergleich daraus gemacht hat, ist ein spannender und guter Polizeithriller fürs Popcornpublikum. Sein größter Oscartriumph ist nicht so genial wie seine anderen wegweisender Klassiker "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull" oder "Good Fellas"...
"Departed" ein erfolgreicher Thriller ...und ein Film, den alle irgendwie gut finden, wenn sie das Original nicht gesehen haben.
Die Schwachstellen des Films sind für meine Begriffe ein bisschen das Overacting von Jack Nicholson. Der kommt in einigen Szenen sehr gut rüber, bei einigen wirkt es aber überzogen. Leonardo diCaprio spielt seinen Part sehr eindrücklich und Matt Damon ist ebenfalls als aalglatter Polizeischurke perfekt besetzt. Allerdings schaffte nur Nebendarsteller Marc Wahlberg eine Oscar-Nominierung. Dies gelang ihm als sehr unkonventioneller Polizist, der am Ende zur Schlüsselfigur des Films wird und einen effekten Abgang hinlegt.

Als ich hörte, dass einer besten Regiesseure aller Zeiten das Remake eines vielschichtigen Mafiathrillers aus Hongkong macht, ein Film der sicherlich zu den besten seiner Gattung gehört und stellenweise sogar das Flair des "Paten" hat. Leider ist das Original weitestgehend unbekannt und es lag jetzt an Scorsese diesen Stoff fürs grosse Publikum zu inszenieren. Die Idee von "Infernal Affairs" ist eine der besten Ideen, die das Genre je zu bieten hatte.
Und Scorsese hatte ja mit "Kap der Angst" bestens bewiesen, dass er das Original an Tiefgang noch locker toppen kann.
Beste Voraussetzungen also, dass da ein Meisterwerk dieses Jahrzehnts geschaffen wird.
Und dann hat es auch noch mit dem lang ersehnten Oscar geklappt, die beste Konkurrenz der letzten 10 Jahre geschlagen.
Ich war sehr gespannt und dann war die Enttäuschung sogar sehr gross.
Vielleicht wäre ich unbefangener herangegangen, hätte ich das geniale Original nicht gesehen.
Was Scorsese im Vergleich daraus gemacht hat, ist lediglich ein ganz guter Unterhaltungsfilm fürs Popcornpublikum. Mehr nicht...und wir sprechen hier vom Macher solcher wegweisender Streifen wie "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull" oder "Good Fellas"...
Während des Films hab ich mich dann auch an diverse Hollywood-Remakes erinnert gefühlt, die alle versuchen, dem Original noch eins draufzusetzen...Spurlos verschwunden...beispielsweise und die in dieser Überzogenheit dann deutliche Substanzverluste damit erzeugen.
So auch für "Departed"...ein Film, den alle irgendwie gut finden, wenn sie das Original nicht gesehen haben.
Die Schwachstellen des Films sind für meine Begriffe
a) die derbe Sprache, die ja in vielen Scorsese Filme super gut eingesetzt wird, hier wirkt sie durch das hohe Aufkommen fast schon unfreiwillig komisch
b) die Leistung des Ausnahmeschauspielers Jack Nicholson ist derart überzogen, dass man seine Performance leider unter dem Begriff "over acting" abspeichern muss
c) die Schlüsselfigur Marc Wahlberg wird zwar anfangs gut herausgearbeitet, da ahnt man ja schon, dass er nach seinem Abgang nochmals auftaucht...diese Szene aber für Scorsese Verhältnisse sogar erstmalig platt wirkt...
überhaupt: Das Ende sorgt sicherlich für einen publikumswirksamen Effekt, dennoch wirkt es bei mir eher negativ, ich finde die Schluss-Szene nicht besonders gut gefilmt...
d) Matt Damon kommt an seine schauspielerischen Grenzen...

ok, vielleicht lege ich bei Scorsese besonders strenge Maßstäbe an, weil ich den Filmemacher als einen der Grössten seines Fachs ansehe...

Gegenüberstellend eine einwandfreie Leistung von di Caprio, der sich vermutlich mit diesem Film endlich wieder vom Titanic Image freischaufeln konnte und nun auch seine Leistung in einem anderen Scorsese Film "Gangs of New York" in einem anderen, viel günstigeren Licht erscheinen lassen.

Übrig bleibt ein guter Unterhaltungsfilm, im filmischen Schaffen von Scorsese aber mit einer seiner schwächsten Arbeiten....
