Remember The Alamo! – SENTINELCELTS

Remember The Alamo!

Morning,all.

Unbelievable though it may sound to those of us who can remember better days,today is the 20th anniversary of the last time Celtic won a knockout stages match in European competition. And what a way to do it,knocking out Barcelona-already on the way to the dizzy heights that would soon follow. And we did it the hard way too,winning a tasty home leg by the narrowest of margins and following it up with a resilient no-scoring draw at The Nou Camp.

Not only that,but we did it with a newbie 20yo at CH and a rookie goalkeeper fresh from celebrating his 19th birthday! Both players had a worldie,the best games of their careers. Indeed,it could easily be argued that David Marshall had the best performance of any Celtic goalkeeper,certainly in my lifetime.

Yes,they really were that good. And no,referring to their performances that night as being like The Alamo is not an exaggeration! But don’t just take my word for it,read the following from the always excellent Jonathan Wilson. After all,he is a far better writer than I am and knows a thing about the game too.

~~~~~~~~~~
From The Blizzard issue nine, by Jonathan Wilson (June 2013)
Under Martin O’Neill, Celtic enjoyed some extraordinary results in European competitions, but none, surely, was so frankly implausible as the rearguard action they mounted in the Camp Nou on the last great European night of his reign. They led 1-0 from Alan Thompson’s goal in the first leg, a fractious, enthralling game in which Rab Douglas, Thiago Motta and Javier Saviola were all sent off, but as Barcelona poured forwards in the early stages in the second leg, that advantage looked distinctly flimsy.
With Douglas suspended, Celtic were forced to turn to their 19-year-old reserve goalkeeper David Marshall whose very evident nerves were hardly helped when he skewed an awful Jackie McNamara backpass out for a corner in the second minute. With Ronaldinho to the fore, Barça, coming off the back of nine straight victories in La Liga, put together great fluid passages of passing that at times swept through Celtic’s defence: real humiliation was a possibility, and it seemed unlikely they could hold out until the ninth minute, never mind the 90th.
Marshall scrambled away a Gerard header, and Luis Enrique then deflected a goalbound shot against the keeper’s extended arm, as somehow Celtic did hold on. Not merely until the ninth minute, but until the 19th, the 29th, half-time. There was no early goal in the second half, and Barcelona’s exasperation was palpable — and with it a renewed and agonising sense of Celtic hope.
A Xavi chip set Luis García through against Marshall, but, diving backwards, the 19 year old got enough of a fingertip on his shot to deflect it over the bar. Then, diving to his left, Marshall clawed away a snap-shot from the substitute Sergio García, whose energy and drive had briefly rekindled Barça hopes.
The jitters were gone, and Marshall and Celtic suddenly seemed invincible as Barça’s early fluency disappeared to be replaced by a string of frustrated and harmless long-range efforts from Ronaldinho. “He has a terrific presence and calmness, he’s not fazed at all,” the Celtic manager O’Neill said of his keeper. “He did an interview for TV after the match and was last into the dressing-room. When he came in it was to enormous applause from the rest of his team-mates.”
It was richly deserved.
~~~~~~~~~~
A tremendous occasion for both our heroes to have on their CV-which in JK’s case was cut so cruelly short-and one which anyone who watched it,whether it be in the flesh or from the comfort of a bar or armchair,will remember forever.

But nobody more than David and John. As it should be.

The night after I met dad for the weekly pints, asked him did he think the young keeper would be benched for Rab Douglas for the next game.
“You’ve gotta start him after that” he replied.
Martin O Neill agreed, our new keeper he was.

I received a very welcome e-mail a couple of weeks ago from one of our regular posters. He was letting me know that he had been given the news that his recently diagnosed prostate cancer hadn’t spread elsewhere. Obviously,I let him know how delighted I was on hearing this,but it got me thinking-I haven’t had mine checked,not ever!

Nobody wants to think about cancer of any kind. Even the word itself strikes fear into most of us. Few either really want to think about the initial testing for this particular form of it,with its lurid examples on tv and film over the years. Sadly,and particularly if you are over 50yo,you should be!

March is Prostate Cancer Aware Month,and you might be interested in reading the following:-

Fortunately,the initial tests need not be as barbaric and mediaeval as are widely thought. There is a PSA test,which is essentially a blood test. So just a little prick!

Either way,if you have any concerns,please seek medical advice at the earliest opportunity.

When MON took over in 2000, I said that success would be winning the league and being in Europe after Christmas. So, for me, MON was a total success as manager. His parting shot, re the slow lane, was so accurate.
I will not be content until a knock out tie victory is achieved, because I firmly believe that if our club used its resources efficiently, as a modern PLC should, Celtic should be competing at that level. Clubs with far less resources have shown the way.
I don’t expect us to win a Euro trophy, but it is feasible to get to a quarter or even semi final, and then, who knows? It’s the hope that kills us.

ernie lynch

Serious question.

Who needs European football when you can sell season books on the back of The Old Firm rivalry?

A Thing Of Beauty

Ger 57,
I think that sums up the thoughts of most of us on here. We are realistic but we want the club to show some ambition to take us back to knock out ties in Europe. MON was right. Life in the slow lane, except we’ve taken it up a notch this year. We’ve parked ourselves in the hard shoulder whilst we wait for the hun jalopy to catch us up, then probably overtake us. What a shower our board are. Charlatans that are stealing money every day.

GER57

ernie lynch
That tells me that the majority of our fans don’t share our ambition. Winning the league most years and beating Sevco most of the time. Disnae matter if Copenhagen or Salzburg outperform us.
It’s relatively risk free profit taking so long as the Huns don’t ever get their act together, or the Third Lanark Referee Volunteer Force really goes into overdrive.

JimDom

Was fortunate enough to be in the Nou Camp that night, a very wet night too.

Ronaldinho tried every trick in his show pony book, but couldn’t find a way past Marshall and JK. We didn’t so much park the bus, but had it parked for us.

It’s no coincidence that Desmond and Lawwell were just at the start of their profit, bonus, dividend “sustainable business model” mantra, back 20 years ago. Since that last knock out stage European win, Lawwell has trousered in excess of £20m from Celtic. Being DD’s compliant patsy does come with significant benefits. A passport for following Celtic in Europe after Christmas is not required.

As an aside, have printed and completed the Celtic Shareholder Resolution form, and will post to Company Secretary, Chris Duffy, in the next couple of days.

Bronski / OF PLC business vibe — they will sell out the season tickets for a few years and then they won’t.
Young team / Gen Z+1 will drift away to the EPL / Play-station nonsense — happening already.
Our lack of traction in the 26 counties shows how things developed.
Or more accurately — how they don’t.

AP showed what is possible — sold out the ground on a regular basis which was a new occurrence.
Moved the needle and now that is but a memory of last year.

I’m sure there will be other markers out there showing how we are sleepwalking towards Euro / global irrelevance.
If you don’t want to be the best you can be the world won’t be long in telling you.

As mentioned yesterday — DD says he is in for the long haul.
His actions tell a completely different story — doing nothing as the world moves up a gear is not a good look.
Still think the ManU innovation might offer up some ideas that we can work on.

The main stand at 100 years old in 2029 — a birthday that shames us.
Truly unbelievable given the innovation and ambition that the club had 120 years ago.
And now we have nothing — sleepy hollow in the boardroom.

I get the feeling that TGD is all out of ideas as to what to do with Celtic.

It’s like he’s now just waiting, Micawber style, for something to turn up.

But in the meantime the priority is to ensure The Old Firm model remains viable, because (a) it helps sustain interest and sells season books and (b) whatever the something is that might turn up is more likely to happen if The Old Firm is still around.

And I wonder if The Bunnet had an inkling, right from the start, that the real challenge was what to do after he left, and that’s why he always made it clear that he wasn’t going to be sticking around.

No serious league in Europe puts much stock in their domestic cup competition never mind two of them. With that in mind I would use the cup competitions to blood our Academy players. The league and going as far as we can in Europe is where I would like to see our focus.

Wee FMcC — his main strength was that he wanted to get things done and guess what he got them done.
From memory he was active around the club for 5 or possibly 6 years and he managed to make a lot of progress.

The issue now is that we have had 25 plus years since then and have dabbled at further progress in a very low energy style.
The club is effectively where FMcC left it and yet there would appear to be very little clamour for change.

Not sure what happens next but another generation / 25 years of stasis will kill the club as a front rank institution.
Our jaiket is hanging on a shoogly peg at the moment and more of the same will push us over the edge.

The baby boomers are starting to drift away and the young team are not the cohesive unit that their fathers and forefathers once were — a life as the Scottish version of Everton or possibly even PNE awaits if we stick to a diet of SPL flat track bullying and OF’ism.

DD will never see the shambles he will pass on to future generations.
And after 25 years of bluster and business failure in G40 — he wouldn’t recognise it anyway.

Starting to understand Pit Pony syndrome — AP showed us the light and the upcoming darkness will hurt all the more.

Good afternoon all the Queens Park Cafe. A dreich day in old Glasgow Town.

Lit – quit with the spray gun,you may be correct once,so far still to see it amid so sprawling paragraphs.
1.DD was in with Fergus from the very start.his £1m,along with 3 others in as source funding right at the start in 1995.
2 It was his idea to go forth as a PLC as a model to recapitalize the club(stadia build,pay debts etc) in the share issue in 1995.As show Fergus liked his big hitters,DD was one of them.

Ernie Lynch
Your use of oldfirm is a goad,it thankfully does not take Celtic to clarify that,much as you and many huns seek it.They brought it on themselves
My family has a history of going to see Celtic since formation,to lay that support down to the hun is simple minded and apt

HH

Source funding 1994 should be

Lost in translation ...

I fear our “big hitter” is taking a nap at the moment.
In fact our “big hitter” is in full Ovaltine mode — the world has moved on and he has just rolled over.

1994 — Wee FMcC was the visionary / big picture guy.
While DD was Dezzy from Accounts — good for the odd idea.

Still the same today but with less energy.

Lit
You paint an errorsome pic,reflects only on you
He and his friend Ricardo(spanish name)iirc,
As always with spray gun atoms are correct,it could
be argued
DD was lookin at big pic with choice of PLC as econ model in 1995,how did that end? 1999 with DD eating up Fergus s/h, and how is that playin out now?All Real world Lit so i guess its hard

‘Your use of oldfirm is a goad,it thankfully does not take Celtic to clarify that’

###

Perhaps someone would care to clarify this:

“Rangers is a great football club, it has a great history and it’s unfortunate that they have been relegated,…..And they’re needed for Scottish football because of their following, the size of the club and especially their history…….Rangers is a fantastic football club, it is one of the greatest football clubs in Great Britain’.

Ernie Lynch

Celtic do not do business or speak as a club formally at a golf event.That simple
Show me where Celtic done that formally?
You wont and never will be able to.
Ps off the record he has said other stuff alas not Celtic business,regardless of how much you wish it so.have you ever asked bout going to see your description in a Celtic pub? Easy to type and i will take no part in justifying the 2clubs,my club doesnt,tho i think you do Ernie.
Happy goading ooops i mean Hail Hail

Linked genetically, in scale and in a shared background and as such an ailing “Rangers” impacts on our health too.

Has the Gombeen Man reappeared?

ernie lynch

And of course Celtic knew nothing about, and in any event could have done nothing to stymie, the five way agreement.

It is just purely coincidental that it achieved just the very thing TGD had his heart set on.

Board boosterism / Exec fan-boys / happy clappers — the viewpoint does get about even if the names changes from time to time.

Dezzie from Accounts — no matter his brainwaves in 1995 he is not fully engaged in 2023 and 2024.
PL coming back as Chairman — total train wreck of an idea that could have been seen from space.

Wee FMcC had the vision / the ideas / the energy.
DD did not but he helped out where he could.

And then pi*sed up all the good work with a buying spree chasing a dream that has never delivered.
Move on 25 years and we have a league to win / a manager up in a kangaroo court / silence from the execs.

If only we played our home games in NY then DD might get more involved.
Big nine weeks coming up — I wonder if DD will make it to Glesga?

Mike in Toronto

Nice’s form has dropped recently, as has their standing in the French league – from 2nd down to 5th.

This is interesting as Nice is owed in part by Ratcliffe, who recently acquired an ownership stake in Manchester United. At the time, Nice were flying high, and in a CL spot. But their drop in form means that they would now qualify for next seasons EL instead of the CL. As Man United only seems more likely to qualify for the EL than the CL, this could be a real problem, as two clubs owned by the same entity cannot both qualify for the same European competition.

UEFA have in the past granted dispensations to allow two such clubs to compete, so long as safeguards are put in place to ensure sporting integrity (which would rule out, I presume, any two Scottish clubs playing)….

but at present, there are almost 300 clubs that are in whole or in part owned by someone who owns another club … and these mult-club owners seem to be increasing, not decreasing ….

so, how many ‘exceptions’ can be made before the ‘exception’ becomes the rule, and/or people decide that the rule simply doesnt work in reality?
