Message from the Residency Program Leadership Team
Thank you for your interest in our Family Medicine residency program. Penn is an incredible place for Family Medicine training. Our program really has it all! We provide a robust clinical foundation in a welcoming and supportive learning environment that prepares our residents to grow into healthcare leaders.
At Penn, we believe that training in family medicine must be well-rounded and practical. Our residents establish their primary care patient panel from the first week of residency. We train residents in full spectrum family medicine including outpatient procedures, hospital medicine, substance use disorder treatment, gender affirming care, HIV/hepatitis care, sports medicine, refugee health, reproductive care, and obstetrics. We value continuity relationships as a way to decrease barriers to access, optimize transitions in care, and provide meaningful relationships for both patients and doctors. Our relationships with our patients extend beyond the clinic to the hospital, where we care for them on our inpatient adult and OB/newborn services.
In addition to clinical education, we strongly value service and advocacy for our patients and community. Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods, each with a rich heritage and its own unique set of resources and challenges. Our social justice curriculum provides a foundation for residents to understand the social and historical context of West Philadelphia’s health landscape. Our community-based training is a top priority, drawing on resources from the greater University of Pennsylvania and the surrounding community to create collaborative partnerships that meet our patients’ needs. With our social justice curriculum, community medicine training, and Anti-Racism Task Force, we strive to dismantle the structural racism that has deeply affected our patients in West Philadelphia.
Our program embraces a growth mindset; we are constantly looking for ways to better meet the needs of our patients and our residents. We foster an environment where residents are empowered to build a more just healthcare system using the tools of research, quality improvement and advocacy taught in our program.
Given the breadth of our training, graduates of our program commonly go on to serve as primary care physicians, family medicine obstetricians, hospitalists, medical educators and leaders in healthcare, like the faculty that trained them .
