Raiders QBs Derek Carr, Marcus Mariota spotted together in Las Vegas

As the Raiders prepare for the 2020 season, players have slowly trickled into the franchise’s new home, Las Vegas. Recently, there’s been enough personnel in town to field team exercises, partially making up for missed practice this offseason due to health restrictions.

Naturally, quarterback Derek Carr was there to run the show. He’s entering his seventh season as the team’s starting signal-caller, and he’s already moved to Las Vegas, seemingly eager for the fresh start the upcoming season in Vegas figures to provide.

His newly acquired — and pricy — backup, Marcus Mariota, hasn’t been around, however. Until now, that is. The two quarterbacks were spotted signing autographs for young fans as they worked out Thursday morning in the Raiders’ new home town.

Mariota had a good reason for his delayed arrival in Vegas. He got engaged to his longtime girlfriend last weekend. Carr had some personal news to share recently as well, announcing that his wife, Heather, is expecting the couple’s fourth child.

The two likely caught up on life off the field, but soon, they’ll be talking almost exclusively about coach Jon Gruden’s playbook and opposing defensive schemes. Carr is the unquestioned starter, but he’s expected to take a significant step forward in his third year under Gruden.

If he doesn’t, it’s possible Mariota will get his shot. He has the mobile QB skills Gruden covets, and owns a solid track record, with a Heisman Trophy and NFL playoff win on his resume.

The plan is for Carr to lead the team to glory, however. With a defense that figures to improve on a dismal 2019 and additional skill players on offense, a winning record is within grasp after last year’s 7-9 effort.
