Green Wave Clinches 2024 Pelican Cup with 7-4 Win

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane catcher Colin Tuft had a three-run homer and the Green Wave's bullpen allowed just one run over the final six and one-third innings to capture a 7-4 victory at UNO Tuesday evening at Maestri Field.

The win clinched the Pelican Cup for the Olive and Blue and moved its record to 18-15 overall. The Privateers fell to 18-14.

TU reliever Blaise Wilcenski (2-0) was excellent on the mound, posting a season-high five strikeouts in three and one-third innings, while giving up just two hits. Carter Benbrook, Henry Shuffler and Trey Cehajic then got the team through the next one and two-thirds innings before Jacob Moore secured his fourth save by recording the team's final four outs.

UNO reliever Trey Usey (0-1) was tagged with the loss after he gave up three runs on two hits and one walk in two innings of work.

Tuft's big blast came in the sixth and broke open a 3-all tie. It was Tulane's third homer of the game after right fielder Matthias Haas and shortstop Marcus Cline had back-to-back solo shots in the fourth.

Third baseman Gavin Schulz also went 2-for-5.

UNO designated hitter Victor Castillo tripled and homered in a 4-for-4 effort for the home team. He also scored twice.

Tuft's homer was his seventh of the season and tied him for the team lead with center fielder Teo Banks. His leadoff double also extended his on-base stretch to 25 consecutive games and his hitting streak to 17.

The Green Wave will be back in action this weekend when it hosts South Florida for a three-game series that begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Bulls are 20-13 overall and 6-3 in the AAC following a 4-1 home win over Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday.
