Updates about tonight's races in California

🌖Our chat has ended, but you can still read it back.

On strategy, Christopher, you had to give Trump credit on the media front...he was doing gaggles everywhere. We caught him out here in CA...where the possiblities of him picking up votes from media avail was not optimal. (OK, so he called our question "nasty,'' when we asked if he cared about blue states. ) But media availability wasn't a problem...and from a CA viewpoint, it hasn't always been easy to get an avail with Kamala Harris, even in her earlier races.

Another big and hugely expensive CA race called for revising Prop. 13, the landmark property tax measure from the 1970s -- the Prop. 15 on this year's balllot would have raised taxes on big commercial and industrial properties. But it's 50-50 right now, right on the edge.

As Jeremy notes, Prop. 16 aimed to restore affirmative action...hugely controversial, and a real battle between major Dems inc Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris who all backed it, and former Gov. Pete Wilson and former UC Regent Ward Connerly, who opposed. That side is winning; it's failing.

Hey Charlie! I'm watching an attempt by Uber et al to exempt the gig tech industry from a new state labor law -- it's the most expensive in CA history, with 5 tech companies dumping in more than $200 million, and a fight with national stakes for the gig industry.

I'm keeping an eye on the district attorney's race in LA, one of the country's biggest law enforcement districts, where progressive challenger George Gascon is up early against incumbent DA Jackie Lacey.

And California looks likely to reject affirmative action -- people thought a changing electorate would produce a different result, but it seems not.

Hey Team California, what are the three most interesting ballot initiatives or elections besides presidential that people outside Calif might not have heard of?

Will be interesting to compare how Biden does with California's Latinos, who make up 40 percent of the state's population. Latinos were 20 percent of the early voters, and here, they're overwhelmingly Mexican-American, and Central American -- very different voter bloc than in FLA

Latest figures out of CA show that early voting was a stunning 13.2 million -- 2 to 1 Dem vs. Republican...it's one of the reason that Gov Gavin Newsom told us today he hopes to make the all-mail voting system permanent

Alex's sources are likely right, and it's going to be a long wait. Now that California is in Biden's column, he's at 209 electoral votes, to Trump's 119. Let's assume Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas are going to Trump. Give him Hawaii, Biden needs to find 58 electoral votes somewhere — some combination of Minnesota (10), Arizona (11), Michigan (16), Wisconsin (10), Pennsylvania (20), Iowa (6), Nevada (6), Maine (3), ME-02 (1), NE-02 (1), Georgia (16). He can lose Georgia, but then he needs to win EVERYTHING ELSE if he also lost Pennsylvania.

Another big race out here is for Los Angeles DA -- Jackie Lacey, high profile and black law enforcment leader, is the incumbent, but she has been abandoned by many Dems -- Rep Adam Schiff, Mayor Eric Garcetti -- for a more liberal challenger, the former DA of SF, George Gascon. It's been called the most consequential law enforcement race in the country.

Went to a get-out-the-vote event earlier today in SF with Gavin Newsom, Barbara Lee, Mayor London Breed...all of them seemed confident -- but definitely cautious. Newsom spent the morning texting voters in Pennsylvania. Seriously.

There's a House race for Duncan Hunter's seat in which Darrell Issa -- remember him? -- is in a neck and neck contest with Dem Ammar Campa-Najar, we're watching that one. And Katie Hill's old seat went to a GOPer in special election, GOP wants to hold on to that for Mike Garcia.

Well, since CA is so solidly blue, and an easy win for Biden, the real question is: can the CAGOP have anything to celebrate? They're hoping to claw back some of those seven House seats lost in 2018....and hold onto a few others....

Good evening all..joining from Oakland, CA -- hometown of Kamala Harris. Polls have just closed in California, and Dems here are nervous about what they're watching in the rest of the country. Here, no worries. California just projected a win for Biden.

Yes to Elena's point, I think map makers are going to have their work cut out for them during 2021 redistricting in places like Texas or Orange County in California if Biden wins tonight. It will be hard to determine how these suburban voters perform in a post-Trump era

One stat to keep in mind: Texas just passed California in recording the highest number of positive Covid-19 tests in the country over the course of the pandemic.
