ROBERT HARDMAN: was no trace of a crust on the cucumber sandwiches, the Yeomen of the Guard lined the lawns and the Band of the Royal Marines played the National Anthem on the stroke of 4pm. So far, so very Buckingham Palace Garden Party. Except that, in one direction, I spotted TV presenter Maya Jama telling the King about filming 'snogs' in Spain. 'It's a reality show called Love Island,' she explained. 'There's one born every minute,' the King chuckled. Nearby, supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was 'very touched' after the Queen complimented her on her new range of M&S lingerie. In among the crowds I spotted, variously, actor Toby Jones, presenter Bradley Walsh , comedian Sir Lenny Henry , newsreaders, directors, painters and both the current and former director-general of the BBC .

How Russian and NATO armies would size up in a WW3 doomsday scenario: Interactive map shows how alliance compares to Putin's depleted forces after Moscow warned it was prepared for conflict on Ukraine's battlefields

Despite all the capabilities of cutting-edge military tech on display in Ukraine, Moscow's primary frontline tactic appears ripped from the playbook of World War I generals - batter Ukrainians with artillery before dispatching waves of soldiers to secure territory inch by blood-soaked inch. It's a style of warfare reminiscent of the Battle of Passchendaele - but it has proved nonetheless effective with Vladimir Putin's forces gaining territory hand over fist in eastern Ukraine. So, until the AI overlords of the future swoop in to do the heavy lifting for us, George S. Patton's observation that 'wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men' looks set to endure. Patton was one of the United States' most revered generals, but it is in Russia where his axiom is perhaps best understood. It was only thanks to sheer Soviet manpower - and willingness to incur casualties on a scarcely believable scale - that the Allied powers were able to defeat the Nazis in World War II. Now, this week's round in the East-West war of words saw Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov goad Western leaders and declare his forces are ready to take on NATO should the security alliance deploy its own troops on Ukrainian soil. With that in mind, MailOnline takes a look at how the armies of Russia and NATO stack up, and outlines the tale of the tape for a potential future clash between East and West on the battlefield in Ukraine.

I've been through hell, people have always assumed I couldn't have kids: Lisa Armstrong's

Whenever the birthdays of her personal assistant's two daughters came round, Lisa Armstrong would buy them lavish presents. She'd do the same at Christmas, too. It was Lisa's way of thanking the girls' mother Anne-Marie Corbett for the work she did looking after her and her husband Ant McPartlin. She always took great pleasure in picking out the gifts for Poppy and Daisy who are two years apart and were at primary school at the time. 'Lisa would send Anne-Marie's girls Christmas and birthday presents every year,' says a close friend. 'She enjoyed doing it. She also showered Anne-Marie with presents and even took her on holiday. Lisa and Anne-Marie were really good friends, she was a trusted part of the set-up. How things have changed. For this is, of course, the very same Anne-Marie who in 2021 married Britain's Got Talent presenter Ant after his acrimonious divorce from Lisa. And who on Tuesday morning gave birth to Ant's first child - a boy named Wilder Patrick.

Man who vanished aged 17 is discovered ALIVE in his neighbour's cellar where he has been held captive for 27 YEARS: Footage shows moment Algerian is found cowering under hay bales - his family feared he died in country's civil war

Named as Omar Bin Omran (or Imran) and said to be one of nine children, he is believed to have disappeared in the city of Djelfa in Algeria 27 years ago. His family assumed he had been killed during the civil war between the North African nation's government and Islamist rebel groups that raged for 10 years in the 1990s and early 2000s. The truth was much closer to home: the missing man was found in his neighbour's house less than 200 metres away from that of his own family. A 61-year-old is now in police custody after Omar, now 45, was rescued on May 12.

Slovakian Prime Minister 'will survive': Robert Fico's surgery has gone 'well' and he is no longer in a life-threatening condition after being repeatedly shot in 'politically motivated' assassination attempt, says his deputy

Robert Fico, 59, was shot five times by a gunman while he greeted supporters in Handlova, north-east of Bratislava, following a Slovak government meeting yesterday. In footage published by RTV Prievidza the gunman, who is reportedly 71-year-old Juraj Cintula, from Levice, was waiting at a barrier for the PM to approach before pulling out the weapon. Despite being flanked by five security guards, Cintula manages to fire off five shots at point blank range before being taken down by the PMs detail. The prime minister was rushed to hospital following the shooting and has since had surgery that 'went well'.

The millennials taking over 'pensioner paradises': How 'Down From Londons' and under-40s

Put off by London's ever-increasing rent prices and the cost of living in big cities, young families and those fresh out of university are opting to live in quieter, more rural towns across the UK. Margate in Kent is one of these places, with a high number of young people moving down from London to the pretty seaside town, locally referred to as 'DFLs'. Rebecca Onyett, 33, who moved to the town from London nine years ago and owns local shop Reo Jewels, said: 'Living in London, the rent prices just kept going up and I really wanted to have my own shop with the jewellery and it just seemed unfeasible, like it wasn't going to happen for a long time in London.

The Devonshire is a restaurant and pub that sits on the edge of London's Soho, a mere hop, skip and a jump from Piccadilly Circus. It opened last year, and is very good indeed. So good, in fact, that the next available booking for lunch is on Monday, June 3. Although by the time you read this, that rare noon slot will be long gone. As for dinner... forget it. To have even the smallest chance of bagging a table, and feasting upon their scallops, lamb cutlets and beef cheek and Guinness suet pudding (Dear God, that pudding), you'll have to be by your computer at 10.30 every Thursday, and pray you move fast enough to grab a few of the 3,000 seats that are released weekly. All I can say is good luck. But there is another way. If you're willing to pay. Yup, Appointment Trader is a website that allows you to buy and sell restaurant reservations for all of London's most sought-after tables. Food and drink very much not included. You want a table for four at The Devonshire tonight? Yours, they claim, for a mere £90.
